I will be traveling to Florida for a year and can't take any of my bike with me. I have decided to buy a bike to use while I'm down there and sell it when I leave. I am looking between these 2 bikes so far:

2007 KTM SuperDuke 990 6,800 miles
https://miami.craigslist.org/brw/mcy/5355366175.ht ml

2012 DUCATI MONSTER 1100 ABS 2,500 miles
http://www.usedmotorcycles.net/ducati/monster-1100 -abs/jupiter-fl/11264

If anyone can provide any type of feedback it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jeremy

If it hasn't sold yet, this is the bike you should buy IMO. I can reach out to the owner and see if he still has it. He's a friend of mine.

The Super Duke is the only one I've ridden.
Silly fast, and lots of torque. A real grin generator.
I've ridden Monster M900, and I wanted to steal it.
Since it's only a year, go hooligan on the KTM.
Since you probably won't need parts.
If I was going to buy one as a keeper, I'd probably go with the Monster.
Again, because of parts availability.
I love to have either, it's a difficult choice.

I would be all over the Monster.

I almost picked up a 990 SuperDuke a couple years ago. I don't know if it's typical, but the clutch was a deal breaker. There was no way I could ever deal with that in traffic. They are bad ass bikes though.

Phelan - thanks for the recommendation for the S1, it sure looks sweet, but I need to look at any bike for its resale value too. Since I plan on selling after my time is up for this trip, resale value plays a big part in all this.

Sifo - What was wrong with the clutch on the SuperDuke? My 1190SX has a very stiff clutch and isn't a problem for me.

Man I LOVE my Buell/EBR but its not in the cards if I need to sell it because I know the market isn't very Buell/EBR friendly right now.

I'd love to pick up an RX to ride, but trying to sell it on the other side would result in too much of a loss and could be hard to sell with the on going issues with EBR.

The bike would be typically used as a daily driver to work for 6 days and 1 day would be my fun day to get out and play around on it. I have heard there are a lot of great places to ride to in Florida. I will be in a hotel for most of the time and the bike will be kept outside. I looking at getting some type of clam shell shelter to keep it in too. I'd love to get a ground floor room and be able to keep the bike in the room with me, but I'm sure they would frown against that.

Thanks for all the input for everyone, I love the looks of both bikes and I think I'm leaning towards the KTM right now.

Sifo - What was wrong with the clutch on the SuperDuke? My 1190SX has a very stiff clutch and isn't a problem for me.

Like I said, I don't know if this example was typical of that model. It did have a fair number of modifications, so the clutch could have been changed some how. It was by far the stiffest clutch I've ever felt on a bike. I know the EBR 1190 has has complaints about that, but they had a very light clutch by comparison.

Being a hydraulic clutch, I was pretty surprised by that. It felt smooth enough in it's action, but just felt like you were fighting a very strong spring. I pretty much have "Popeye" forearms too.

If you like the SuperDuke, certainly go check it out. I would just say to make sure you pay attention to the clutch to make sure you can live with it. It could be very different from the bike I looked at.

The cheaper you buy the bike for, the less you will loose on resale value. You could drop a $3000 purchase price used bike into a river after two years and probably loose less money than even the best "hold resale value" $10,000 bikes.

Reepicheep - great point...not looking to anything new that would depreciate a great deal after purchase, but something in a fair market value. I under stand and am willing to accept a bit of loss due to the usage and mileage I would be adding onto it, but would like to keep it as little as possible. Just like every other person that is trying to sell their bikes too.

Are there any specific items to look at very closely to ensure that there are no hidden issues (wheelie monster, drag racing, or stunting bikes, imploding motor).

is there a method of trying to determine if a bike has been stunted or repetitive wheelie's? Fork seals maybe, but how to know if they are bad or blown.

Thanks

Blind luck ...... In concert with a pinch of wisdom, tempered with experience.

Resale is a funny thing and, in spite of endless lip service to the contrary, generally comes down to mileage.

I've learned something with cars.

I buy new and fairly frequently. I use the best Amsoil Signature full-synthetic oil . . . . I drain all fluids .. Coolant, transmission, differential and brakes . . Annually and replace . . . I rotate tires frequently and replace with the best you can buy often. I keep the outside waxed, tar fee and do a clay treatment every month to keep it so a towel, placed on the hood, slides off unless held. I keep the inside immaculate and the engine bay like new. Bottom line is my current car, turning over 100,000 miles could be represented as " brand new" to most folks.

Know what that does to resale?

Absolutely nothing.

Fact is . . .in the car world . . . Resale is 99% a function of mileage. The ONLY way I benefit from my anal attention to detail is throug diminished maintenance costs by keeping the car.

I went to look at a new car the other day and, as drawn as I was . . . Having considered 5 different ones . . . I think I made the decision to " hold'em".

Same with my bikes.

Putting an $8,000 blue-printed motor in. Buell S2 makes it worth . . . You guessed it . . . About $4,000 tops. Ditto for the low mileage Ulysses. The best way to receive joy from. Motorbike is to ride upon it.

Ergo . . . .your first consideration, given your concern about resale, is to minimize acquisition cost. My personal best experience has been with KLR's. You buy them . . . Ride the snot out of them for a couple years . . . Wheelie them without the " what if I drop it worries" and then sell them for about what you paid for them.

Motorcycles are tons of fun and crappy investments.

Court - you sure have a way of explaining things in detail.

I used to be the same way about my cars and bikes until i realized that it didn't matter how clean I kept it it just didn't have any factor in any resale or trade-in. Now I keep up with the required maintenance to keep it running in tip top shape and just enjoy to hell out of it.

As much as I would LOVE to pick up another bike to keep, the wife has put a limit on the number of bikes i keep and ride to 6.

I am afraid that whatever I get I am going to really enjoy it and want to keep it, maybe the right direction would be a KLR, lots of repair parts and relatively inexpensive to maintain.

Thanks

I hear there are some good off pavement adventures in Florida... a KLR would be a good choice!

I would also suggest taking a look at a V-Strom 650.

I was going to say a KLR would be my first choice too, but figured it would sound cliche, and it's kind of a bike on another planet compared to a superduke or a monster 900.

I actually have a good friend in Ocala, FL selling a V Strom if you're interested. I'll ask him for the details, but IIRC he wants something like $3500 for it.

Edit- my mistake, it's a 2005 FZ6 with 6,000 miles.

BTW thanks Glitch. If you remember The_Italian_Job (Edoardo), he built that S1 some years ago, back in 09/10 IIRC, with no expense spared something like $15,000 in it.

Phelan - I would prefer some type of V motor vice the I4, I love the sounds and torque of a V motor. Thanks for the info though. I was looking at the v-strom 1000 too as I think the 650 is a little too small for my ass.

KLR's in the area are relatively cheap too, but not sure how much time i'd get to do some off-roading. Plus I haven't done much at all other than trying too keep up with my son on his 140.

I'm with Reepicheep here. I say a KLR or some other dual sport. Just me but I find street bikes incredibly boring in flat, curveless areas. Having something to bomb through the sand and dirt roads will be way more fun for a greater percentage of your year in florida.

Between the two you show, KTM. Now if I am thrust in your situation and using my money? I'm getting a dual sport. I love my Buell but knowing what I know now, when I bought it while living in southern utah I should have bought a KLR or DR 650. I could have explored endlessly and never seen the same area twice. Whereas on the street oriented Buell I quickly ran out of interesting tarmac.

Something to consider.

I hear ya. I was thinking it was a V Strom 1000 for some reason until I asked for more specifics from him. I can relate to wanting a bigger bike.

FWIW the 650 and 1000 VStrom supposedly are the same physical dimensions. A guy at work has a 650 and it's a full sized motorcycle.

Now I just found this posted in the area where I'll be heading. So many choices and looking for something different. I ma not an off road kind of guy as I did a little single track and didn't care for it.

Is this bike comparable to the others I posted?
