One of my favorite TV shows of all time has started a kickstarter campaign; they're trying to raise enough money to produce 3-12 shows which will hopefully generate some network interest in bringing the show back.

http://www.bringbackmst3k.com

Their goal is to raise $2M; this is apparently the first day of their effort and they were already at ~$129k a few minutes ago. This is the first kickstarter I've ever seen where I could literally watch the amount go up significantly in just a few minutes. At this rate, they won't have any trouble hitting their goal.

Cool!

In the meantime, if you need an MST3K fix, you can pick up episodes at Pluto TV or their youtube channel for free.

I never really watched it, but have been aware of it- I'd probably dig it.

Somewhere I heard a radio interview where they were discussing MST3K, and how much work and tedium MUST have been involved to produce each show... think about it!

^ I think you would.

It runs continuously on Pluto TV, a free internet service (as well as a whole bunch of other "channels"). There are also several complete episodes on their official channel on youtube.

BTW- they had passed $375K raised the last time I checked about 30 minutes ago, and there are 31 days left in their fund-raising campaign. That's crazy.

I watched a few of them. Never 'got it'.

Shows I wished had not been canceled, in no particular order:

Firefly
Star Trek Enterprise (best one IMHO, no idea why it didn't get any traction)
Dead Like Me
Greg the Bunny
Family Guy (we got that one back)
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Used to watch MST3K all the time. It even made unwatchable movies enjoyable. Too many drinking games associated with that show as well.

Hootowl,

Loved Dead Like Me. I think they didn't promote it enough as few have heard about it. Shame.

Hmmm never heard of it.

WTF?!?!

That's un-Buell-ican!

Reference 1

Reference 2

How can someone have never heard of MST3K? The only thing any more inexplicable is knowing of it, but not getting into it (sorry Hootowl)...

Nearly 3/4 of a million raised at this point - that's gotta say something!

They're approaching $1.5M raised (just 3 days into this thing). Joel just posted a big update with answers to a lot of questions, including an explanation of where all this money will go:

Wow- they're up to ~$1.85M raised in less than a week. Looks like they have a good chance of hitting their first target of $2M before the first week is up.

And some people thought the idea of raising a couple of million to buy EBR via crowdfunding was nuts...

^ If you click on: http://www.bringbackmst3k.com it takes you to their Kickstarter page where there is a live counter showing the amount of pledges they've received. They're called "pledges" because the money isn't actually withdrawn from people's accounts until the last day of the Kickstarter campaign.

If you scroll down, the page also shows a breakdown of where the money will go. Of the first $2M, something like $700,000 goes to pay Kickstarter fees and rewards to people who donated. That leaves enough money to make 3 new episodes of MST3K. If they can raise $3.3M, they can make another 3 episodes. If they can raise $5.5M, they can make 12 episodes.

They're over $2.15M now with 24 days to go. I'm betting they'll easily hit $3.3M and I wouldn't be surprised if they hit the full $5.5M.

So what happens when the money is collected and no more episodes are produced? Is Kickstarter going to sue someone?

Sorry about the cynicism, but it strikes me as a bit ridiculous that people can rally with $2M for a TV show. I mean isn't there ENOUGH stuff to watch already?

What about donating to worthwhile causes like the local pet shelters or something?

Fresno, Kickstarter just acts as a middleman and gets the project its money. They don't guarantee that anything will end up being made. There have been times where successfully funded kickstarter projects never panned out for one reason or another, the buyers do not get a refund. I joke and call it Delaystarter, as out of the dozen or so things I've helped fund, every single one took longer than promised but I've always gotten everything in the end.

Sure, if you want to watch a 12 hour marathon of Alaskan Ice Road Pawn Picker Swap Star Truckers, then you are all set. Same if you just want to watch Procedural Cop Drama or Unrealistic Hospital Show. Not much content on TV that interests me these days, I'll check out some old MST3K to see how it is.

Geeze I knew I was exaggerating with my post, but not as much as I thought. Some other channels like H2 are doing UFO show marathons, Spike is doing Gangland and Cops, TNT loves their reruns of Law & Order.

I sure do miss the great selection of shows since getting rid of cable!

Meanwhile, you can watch of free re-runs of MST3K on their official youtube channel and the free streaming Pluto TV.

Here's a pretty cool link related to this thread. The site provides all sorts of analytics of how the Kickstarter campaign is going. You can see that things have slowed WAY down since they hit their original goal of $2M, but it still appears they should easily hit their secondary goal of $3.3M without an issue and they have a reasonable chance of hitting $5.5M (enough to produce 12 new episodes).

http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/mst3k/bringbackms t3k/

Apparently this is a pretty normal profile for a Kickstarter campaign. They should get a big boost at the end of the campaign as Kickstarter sends out e-mail reminders to people who have signed up but who haven't actually pledged any money yet.

Oh yea, the unofficial word is Felicia Day (who's not too hard on the eyes) will be the new "mad scientist" on the show:

Over $2.8M raised so far; enough for ~4+ episodes and over half-way to their ultimate goal of $5.5M, enough for a full season of 12 episodes. http://www.bringbackmst3k.com

Don't forget to watch tomorrow:

FREE on Pluto TV or youtube.

5 days left in the campaign and they've raised over $3.8M. That's enough for 7 or 8 episodes, but they're still hoping to hit $5.5M for the full season of 12 episodes.

They're supposed to stream two episodes of MST3K each night this week via Pluto TV and their official youtube channel, with additional bits by Joel.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the new version of this in a few months.

Yay! MST3K is back on Netflix, with 20 episodes including this one, "The Side Hackers" - dirt sidehackers at that. Cool.
