Ferris- You could keep it going a while longer and get enough for pants too. (I was planning to donate tonight.) Of course, he may overload his bike's electrical system with all that connected.

Hugh, many thanks! : )

I've talked "keeping the legs warm strategy" with the missus. From personal experience, I *think* once her hubby is able to keep his core warm (this is vital) and hands warm via the heated gear, keeping his legs comfortable should be as simple as some cheap snowmobile pants (which are also super-easy to don and doff).

I think we've got a good, successful plan in place for him at this point; if heated pants turn out to be a necessity, I'll fire up this thread again.

Many thanks, amigo. It's incredible (but not surprising) to me that so many folks here on BWB are willing to step up and help out someone you don't even know. I can't thank y'all enough.

Ferris, get him a pair of Carhart insulated coveralls.
Easy on/off, I wear them over my jeans, good to high teens, low 20s.

20 bucks kicked in.

All y'all: We're gonna have some funds leftover when this is all said and done, not a ton, maybe $150 or so.

If there are no objections, I'd like to donate the extra money, on behalf of BadWeB, to Crusty's adventure: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/406 2/771306.html?1444408234

Either that or buy the guy some heated pants and hope the electrical on his cycle can handle the draw. A spare headlight and maybe spare tire would also be of value since money is tight. I would at least suggest some battery powered heated socks! Not much money and no draw on the electrical, but you have to feed them every once in a while.

Anyway the poor guy can move closer to work, or is it one of the jobs where the work moves around a lot?

I second the carharts…Mine have seen better days due to grease, fire, salt, chainsaws, and hockey pucks, but still manage to keep the cold wind at bay, and can be used for a number of other activities as noted...

He's got a good job in construction, but has to commute to wherever the present job site is; in this case, it's 90 miles away. It is what it is.

They've looked at moving closer to the world in which he usually works (very urban), but the massive increase in housing costs (they're very rural) would offset any savings in gas.

Yeah, but three hours on the road every day sucks. All he's doing is working, commuting, and sleeping. I've lived that life, and it really drags down you down. Best thing I ever did for myself was shortening my commute. Gives you your life back.

With his line of work, it might always be an hour or more each way. That's the tough part with those kinds of jobs.

Thanks Hugh! With your donation we're now at an even $600 - again, I can't thank y'all enough. : )

GoFundMe (and WePay) charge a total of 7.9% in fees, plus $0.30 per transaction. We generated $365.00 in gross donations from GFM, for a net of $334.37.

Another $235.00 came in via PayPal (as "gifts," so no fees), so our gross net total via PayPal is $235.00.

$334.37 + $235.00 = $569.37 gross net total donations.

The Gerbing controller was $89.99 (free shipping), so $569.37 - $89.99 = $479.38 balance.

The Gerbing jacket and gloves should run about $325-ish total, so we should end up with about $150.00 in "surplus" donations, which we (BadWeB) can donate to Crusty and his most-excellent adventure.

I should have jacket and glove sizes for the rider-in-need by the end of the day. Once the GFM and PayPal funds reach my account (one transfer was initiated yesterday, and one this morning) I can get his jacket and gloves coming, and what's left over we can then forward to Crusty.

That's where we stand up to the minute. Thanks again EVERYONE for your generosity; as I said upthread, you have no idea how much your kindness and compassion means to the parties involved. : )

Ferris

Ferris,
I missed your email and haven't been a regular on Badweb recently. I'll kick in %50 for Crusty's adventure. I'll send that to your Paypal after work.

OK, here's where we stand:

$365.00 donated via GoFundMe ($334.37 after fees)
$285.00 donated via PayPal (including the final donation, $50 from Alex Prior - thanks brudda!)
= $650.00 gross total donations (wow! : ))

$334.37 GFM net
+ $285.00 PayPal net (no fees)
= $619.37 net total donations

The Gerbing jacket and gloves were ordered on Monday and are on their way to the RIN (rider in need); he rec'd the Gerbing controller several days ago. Here's a breakdown of what the gear cost:

Gerbing jacket $180.00 ("old logo" jacket, sale price)
Gerbing G3 gloves $125.99
Gerbing dual-controller $89.99
= $395.98 total (free shipping x three)

$619.37 net total donations
- $395.98 gear
= $223.39 "surplus" funds

I just sent $223.39 to Crusty via PayPal with a note that reads "From your friends at BadWeatherBikers : )"

I want to thank you all, again, for your compassion and generosity, not only to the RIN and his family, but also for our brother Crusty.

I had originally hoped to raise $500.00 for the RIN, thinking we'd need at least $450.00 to get him set up right. We blew right past that goal, topping out at an amazing $650.00, which probably would have climbed higher had I not put the brakes on!

I shopped wisely for the gear, and was able to get the RIN set up for less than 400.00, with the "surplus" funds going to Crusty on behalf of BWB.

Thanks again, from the bottom of my heart, to those of you who stepped up and donated to these two very worthy causes; I don't have words to adequately express my gratitude.

I sent Dawn a link to this thread, and just got a very nice reply (emphasis mine):

quote:

Most excellent! Thank you.

For future reference, we almost always have things on clearance because of a previous model year, Gerbing discontinued, etc. We also always offer 15% off any regular priced Gerbing item to Police/Fire/Military, active, retired, or veterans.

Thank you and the members of your group for reaching out to others in need.

Update: The RIN's job site has changed to a new location (which isn't uncommon for him). I *think* the job site is closer, although knowing where he lives, and the area in which he generally works, the commute is still a long one.

For several days he drove his truck to work, so he could move all his tools and stuff to the new job site.

And then the clutch went out in his bike, so even more commuting in his truck while he got the clutch sorted out.

I just got a short video message from him. He rode to work today for the first time since he got the Gerbing gear and got everything hooked up. He said it was 24 degrees when he rolled out this morning, but said he stayed toasty and warm on the ride in, and wanted to say "THANKS!" to everyone who donated.

I'd post up the video if I knew how, but I wanted to take a moment and thank you all, again, for helping out a fellow rider; he appreciates it, his missus appreciates it, and I appreciate it.

Thank you all. : )

Good to hear it's working out! I took a ride in the rain yesterday with my new heated grips, and it makes a world of difference.
