So I just picked up an 03 Jetta TDI with 240k on the clock for $1100. It's a 5 speed and totally bone stock. The shifting was all screwed up so I bought a dieselgeek 5 speed short shifter for it. Man, what a difference! I highly recommend it for anyone with a VW stick.

My main issue right now is it seems to be a bit sluggish. When I start the car, doesn't matter if the engine is warm or cold, it will rev up VERY slowly until I hit 3k and then it'll run alot better. Don't know if it's the turbo that is lagging or what it is.

I think I'm going to pull the intake and turbo off and give them a good cleaning to see if they're gunked up.

Any hints or tricks to get this thing to run better? Tuner? Or just any tips in general, this is my first diesel.

I've owned a 2006 Jetta TDI for 8 years. Best source of info I've found is the forum here:

http://forums.tdiclub.com/

Here's the model-specific forum for your car: http://forums.tdiclub.com/forumdisplay.php?f=12

I'm sure somebody there can offer some good suggestions.

I highly suggest getting the VCDS cable for the car. I have a 2006 Jetta TDI and avoided the cable for a while due to cost. After I bought it life became much easier.

Cleaning the turbo and intake is probably a good place to start. I cleaned quite a bit of gunk out of mine.

The 03 and the 06 have different engines. PD started in 04. Make sure you're getting maintenance advice for your engine type when you read the tdiclub forum. And yes, tdiclub is a huge resource. It's badweb for TDIs.

^ I posted the link for the A4/MkIV Jetta (99.5-~2005), which should be right for his car.

Yea that's where I started but I figured I'd ask here since this is where I like to hang out.

Yeah I know. Was talking about tdiforum. Sometimes it can be confusing about which year you're reading about and if you don't know about the engine differences you may find yourself confused or in trouble.
