Another friend had something like this with a Camry, and the mechanic finally replaced the ECM to fix it.

Fortunately it was an older camry, so it was $75 from Ebay.

They replaced a computer and the ignition switch. I suspect they didn't need to replace the computer.

This is almost enough to make me car shop for older-pre-computer cars. Unfortunately I live in the Rustiest Belt, and such cars are rare.

Comment that some models of say, BMW or Mercedes are incredibly bad choices because the computers of the day are no longer in production, and were the most sophisticated complex crap of the day.... and nearly impossible to fix without cubic dollars. While previous years exotic super cars need serious wrench skills, (and serious money ) they aren't impossible to work on, just complex & expensive.

I loved the comment on panel gaps.

That's too bad that the dealer replaced the computer. I'm sure it didn't need it. It sucks when mechanics just replace stuff at your expense until the problem is fixed.

Kwkride, that's one of the main reasons I got out of the motor trade and into driving.
