I've had the itch for something different.... and can't afford another bike in the garage. I've found a person that will trade me his nearly stock 08 xb12R for my 08 1125R.

I've had more than one friend claim its a huge step back..... am I nuts?

The main reason to get rid of the 1125R is the overabundance of power....... Florida is boring, therefore that power gets used a bit.

That all said, I'd like to hear your opinions.

they both sell for about the same price used so if you are wanting something different it seems like a win/win for both sides to me.

the XB platform has quite a bit less HP, but still feels torque-y.
I like the simplicity of the air cooled engine, even if it is 1970's technology. less moving parts means less things to go wrong ... right?

make sure you are not getting the short end of a dirty stick, as it's really hard to trade back once a deal is made

I have multiples of both, they are both great platforms.

One nice thing about the XBs is that because of the lack of power, you can wring them out easier. Two or three seconds at WOT on an 1125 or 1190 and you are either in a tree or going to lose your license, do the same on a XB and you might have gained enough speed to pass a Prius.

In Florida though, I still feel that either bike is the wrong tool for the job, too flat and boring, both crank out a boatload of heat in traffic but the XB is worse.

Come on Froggy! We both know 3 seconds on an XB will hit the rev limiter!!

Damn.....Froggy ALMOST said something nice about an XB! He recovered and came back to his senses in time to catch it in the next sentence. Good one Froggy!

I'd think over time the XB will be cheaper to keep. 1125 platform was kind of short term.

It's fun for me but the Frogster has always berated the poor XB!

I don't ever hold the XB for 3 seconds, I shift at 2 seconds! It took me a little while to figure that out though...

I might just sell the truck and buy the xb.

I test drove the street triple today, and I must say:

Ebr needs a triple!!!!

The extra power is only really realized on the top end.

I just went with a bike that makes less than half the power of my S1 and is just as fun if not more to ride.

Every bike has its unique feel and character.

I'm spoiled.
I say keep the 1125 and add the Firebolt.
I've been growing my collection lately and finally got a tuber.

XB12X, 1125R, 1190RS and an RS1200.
Ross wants me to buy his S2 basket-case...
Life is good today!

"... do the same on a XB and you might have gained enough speed to pass a Prius."

Ummm, I guess your reference points have shifted, given what you did on the rolling ride back from Wal-Mart to the campgrounds in WV, Frogs.
Had I not been wearing my Hed, I might've took chase... and then, there's the Asylum. We could've ended up worse!

Malott- the triples are addictive...

Having had both. I would disagree. My 1125 was way hotter than my xbr.
I find that I think the xb handles better than the 1125. However the power difference is very noticeable.
If you are about power you will be disappointed
I have all kinds of twisties here so I really didn't miss the power that bad when I sold my 1125.
Plusses are - better fuel economy easier to maintain and more parts out there.

Lots has been happening since 2008,

For example: Triumph Street Triple R.

Faster, better handling, more reliable.

By a good margin.

And the company is still in business.

Jes' sayin'

It is far more fun to ride a slower underpowered cycle at the limit (and stay legal) than to ride a faster powerful cycle within the legal limits! I had more stupid fun when I had my little YSR50 running, me and a couple of friends had no end to the stupidity with big wide grins from flogging that little sucker around everywhere we took it! Not suggesting it for everyone, but maybe you should be looking at something that is just plain fun to drive within the confines of your location.

Maybe a little 400cc dual sport turned into a mini moto would be something of value to you, and cheap enough that you wouldn't need to consider trading/selling the other cycle.

All that said, my XB*R is for the times I want to go be a hooligan, and my newly acquired Electra Glide for the times I just want to roll down the highway for hours on end. Wish there was some closer local racing, might take my own advice on a little lightweight 400.

I have a truck I use a half dozen times a year..... She's gonna go. After raising hell yesterday on the 1125.... Not sure what to do with her. I know I'll miss the power.

But I am just mature enough to admit I'll never grow up riding it. What a beast....

That was my plan too, jam an 80cc or even 125cc engine in that thing and just blast! The real upgrade is to make sure you go with a 2 stroke larger motor so you have LOTS of power, though a few guys did do a 4 cycle conversion and some even went liquid cooled. There used to be a forum for the YSR, haven't been there in years. Still have the machine, engine is pretty much toast, but I should get it going one of these days.

While not exactly the same, I'm of the belief that my 9r was one of the best bikes I've ever had. It seemed like one of those do everything type of bikes, it wouldn't do anything extraordinary, but would do everything well with few hiccups or complaints.

I'm 6' 2" and with relatively few mods, heli bars and peg drops, I rode it many 300 mile days. It was tough enough to haul 220lbs around a track all day long, I also rode it to the track and then back home. I commuted daily with it, from March to November. The windscreen along with the tank/frame shape was great in rain/cold. My next mod was an 1125r fairing to help guard the hands.

Parts are cheap - I was hit by a car - I was at a full stop, going to make a left, when a car hit me from behind while doing 40 or so. I rode the bike home, insurance gave me 2700 bucks, I put a new swing arm pivot bolt and a left hand bar on it. Pocketed the rest and rode some more. If you like to turn your own wrenches, maintenance is super easy.

I can't really think of anything I didn't like about the XBr. Most of your 1125 aftermarket stuff will fit, damper, pegs, shock, wheels, brakes, etc. With a little bit of time, thought, and money, the R's can be switched to S's pretty easy, either just the front, or just the back or both. Sure the 1125 has rediculous power comparatively, but I only felt the XB needed more when I was on the track - and that was really only because I had just gotten off of an 1125r. The wheelbase on an XB also makes it feel faster than it actually is, and with a bigger stroke it comes on quick - Plus you could send it to Pammy at cycle rama in FL and get even more out of it if you want.

I think the only thing you'd miss would be the raw power - well that and I think your 1125 sounds better.

The triple bug almost bit me a few years ago, I wanted a sprint pretty bad, but after sitting on one I decided it wasn't for me. The speeds do look cool though.

I've a very similar experience... I rode the crap out of my 2005 CityX, had to put in a 2nd engine, rode out to HC '10 and back... on that trip I did 2000.8 miles, from the doorstep. Sold it with about 42K miles, IIRC.

What I loved about the XB's was the juxtaposition of the motor vs. the chassis... in my line of work, we call it an emulsification; a proper mixture of things that might naturally not work together. I always knew that I could flail the motor and probably not die... once I rode the 1125CR I kinda knew my limits. Now that I ride this old '02 Triumph, I'm challenged to grok it.

I had a talk with a good friend recently, who doesn't ride road but only offroad and prolly less than 200cc... I'm gonna take his advice.

I am in the same boat. Loving my CR here in Colorado and got a beautiful cyclone to match for 2 up riding with the wife this past summer. (Pretty great for shorter rides)

I want a low mileage 08 or 09 XB12r in white/blue. The CR will leave my stable eventually. Have had it almost five seasons and it rides as good as the first day I bought it, if not better now that I am comfortable. Florida though..... Would be a major bummer to sit on either in that heat and humidity. I give you credit.

Well, I sold the truck tonight! We shall see what the nutty professor brings home. My list looks like a 5 year old's wish list for a road trip. Random, off the wall bikes.

So far here's what I've found:

Rocket 3
Speed triple
Street triple R
955i Daytona
08 xb12r (I want the s or x though)
BMW r1200rt
R1150r rockster
F800st
Hyper motard 1100

I love bikes way too much. I want them all.

There's been a sudden influx of mid 90's Triumphs into the market. Those are getting harder and harder to pass up.

The Speed Triple has what is likely one of the best engines in any motorcycle ever. Unfortunately the bike feels a bit heavy and even in the newer versions has a bit of a chunky feel to it.

The Street Triple R is likely among the most effortless steering and neutral handling bikes out there today. With a full system and proper map they have enough poke, too. Stock they're a little lacking in the power department. They look ok on paper but aren't as responsive as they should be out of the box.

XB12's are among the most entertaining bikes I've ridden. Aside from the big lumpy engine there is a level of refinement on the chassis that makes it a little boring for me. I wouldn't mind one as a track mule, but prefer the down and dirty S1 on the street.

The Ducati Hypers are fun bikes, but are more a tall street bike than anything else. I jumped a demo once and ended up sore for a day or two. Brutal landing. The riding position is very neutral and natural and they get around well, though aren't quite as competent as a true sportbike or nearly as fun or flickable as a real motard.

Other bikes I liked riding are the ZRX1100/1200 and Aprilia Tuono. The ZRX is a super cool UJM that handles acceptably well and has a smooth powerful engine. It's a new school bike with an old school feel with some refinement. The Tuono is everything I like about the S1 and just a bit more.

My recent "downgrade" was to motard an old school dual sport.

It is kinda soft and wallowy all around but is surprisingly composed on the street and an absolute joy to ride around on. It still averages 48mpg with exhaust, airbox, and carb mods with heavy handed throttle usage. It's very stable yet changes direction effortlessly.
