I've been up at the family compound for a couple days now. Focus has been on cleaning up my mom's yard. She had 5 60 foot poplar trees that were heavily damaged, along with a couple of pines, and some ash trees that were going from ash bore damage anyway. My nephew's girl friend got her dad to deliver an articulated front end loader to help out. That made things go incredibly fast. It was great just knocking down a whole tree, and moving it out of the way, root ball and all.
Real easy to stack into a huge future bonfire.
The real shock for me was when I got a chance to go back into the forest yesterday PM. I could take the quad for a ways, but once the trail dropped down the west facing ridge it was a disaster. I stopped and too some pictures. All of these were take within about 100 yards of where I stopped the quad. Where there used to be forest canopy, there is now sunlight shining down. It's actually very hard to manage to find a path to get through the woods.
I know this next shot looks like the camera was held at an odd angle, but it's just the trees are all at an odd angle.
I took a drive over to Glen Arbor too, there are many areas just as bad as our land. I'm still trying to come to grips with the amount of damage we took. It's an incredible loss of timber. In an area where many heat with wood, a number of people are cutting and stacking it by the road and hanging a sign that says FREE! There's so much wood available it's not even getting picked up. It's going to hit those who sell fire wood for a number of years to be sure. I'll close with a bit of Buell content.
BTW, running an articulated front end loader has been great! |

Holy crap! So much for being safe from hurricane conditions away from the coast! What a mess. Were you making Tim Allen caveman noises while you were doing this? |

It's even better with a 4-way bucket!

I hate to see the tree canopy affected that way,she lost some gorgeous trees. That reminds me of Hurricane Kate in '85,I was at work and heard that my dad had gone home to see what damage there was.I took off early and had to pull three trees out of the road with my Jeep to get within 300 yards of his house, you couldn't see anything beyond that point. He had a heavily wooded lot and lost 75% of his trees.A neighbor, three doors down, got up from having lunch and went into the next room,a 24" pine flattened his dining room table. |

Those pictures remind me of what our dirtbike trails turned into from hurricane Bob. My friend and I took a good amount of effort with axes and machetes to clear it out. |

Where in Michigan is this? It's Leelanau county, very near Maple City. Yesterday my brother and I almost got a trail cleared down to the lake. One last mess to clean up on that trail. Also yesterday, my mom got a new knee installed. It's amazing. Today she's home and walking around the house with a walker. It's good to take a break from clearing trees! |
