Long story short left home Sunday morning in search of a donut and ended up in the Adirondacks. 250 miles later I didn't end up with the donut I was looking for instead I got a shot glass with a moose on it...

Anyway my interest in motorcycle camping/ Sport Touring has been re-ignited. Does anyone have some suggestions for a Tent/sleeping bag/mattress all of which need to pack small and not break the bank or any other stories related to getting lost.

My bike is a 2014 1190SX

Current luggage: Wolfman Beta Bag and Renegade Duffle (would be nice to strap the tent to this)

Beer Currently Drinking: OV

Beer I was drinking Sunday: Nothing (436 miles fueled by pure stupid)

Not an expert, but when I was last down in Suches GA there was a guy with a super neat suspended tent/hammock rig... of course you'd need two proper trees.

I'd head to a good outfitter store and pick a few brains.

I have a 3 season Eureka tent, REI 15-29* rated sleeping bag (a little warm for summer usage but very good overall) and a thermarest pad. I can pack everything into two dry bags. I strap them over the back of me seat.

Most backpacker's gear translates well to Motorcycle Camping.

For carrying your gear see Helen2wheels bags. Waterproof bags and breathable bags for tents. They have a strip sewed into them that keep them from sliding sideways. I carry a 3 man Eureka tent in one bag and a sleeping bag, camp chair, army shovel, cot and a pea shooter for remote camping.

I now also have Helen's strap kit that fits the back rest and is much better than one nylon strap and two bungie cords

I do a lot of "adventure" riding on my Tenere. The best gear I've found, that packs small, and weighs next to nothing is back-packing gear. If someone is expected to carry it all on their back for miles and miles, it certainly will work on your bike...

Here are a couple of websites dedicated to motorcycle camping:

Good luck!

I tried a Koppen Lokal 1 person tent this year. Small and light but lacks ventilation. OK for a one night stay, but I am going to figure out how to carry my 3 person CrissCross for longer stays. I use a Thermarest TrailScout medium and find it tolerable. ie. no back ache in the morning. In the CrissCross I like a double high twin size air mattress.
Looking at single wheel trailers.

I camp heavy, in a canvas tent, A 15ft Past Tents spoke model. Way too big to carry on my Cyclone.

I wore out a Redhead ( Basspro line ) nylon 10 ft. dome that, while too big for back packing, carried fine on the bike, and had this pole configuration, permitting you to stand upright throughout the tent. Mine was a single room, and a bit smaller.

The nicest part was being able to roll the bike into the tent at night and roll it out in the AM not covered in dew. ( using a block under the kickstand )

I'm going to get one of these, with the kettle/storage can.

I suggest with any tent, that you cut a piece of light tarp to fit the bottom of the tent and always set up the tent on top, being sure to tuck the edges under to keep water from pooling under the floor. This really prolongs the life of the tent, and you just roll the tarp up tight, dirty side in, for transport. ( let it dry whenever possible and hose it off, when you can )

As others have mentioned, backpacking tents are a good option as they pack down small and light. REI has a pretty good selection.
Redverz makes some very nice tents made specifically for motorcycle camping. They are pricey, but very nice.

IIRC, the Aerostitch catalog has a few good books on MC camping... might be worth a look, maybe also on Amazon.

Ditto on the backpacking gear suggestions. As an aside, I've purchased a silnylon tarp and a trecking pole with the intent to pitch it as a tent on an upcoming backpacking trip. Very light weight and small and is fairly cheap. Add in a small piece of housewrap for a ground sheet. For sleeping bags I found some fleece (just a shell, no lining) bags made by Coleman that are pretty light and small. Not very warm for spring/fall but for summertime motorcycle camping they would be perfect.

I've been camping almost all summer. When I pass through Denver next week, I'm going to stop at Arvada Army & Navy and but a USMC surplus 2 man tent. My 16 year old REI Half Dome just doesn't cut it any more.

As far as sleeping bags go, any bag that's warm enough and fits you is good enough.

When younger I always found the tent cumbersome, a tarp in case it rained and a kelty 20 degree bag was all I ever took.

I'm a little older now, so a thermarest is a must, though I'm still not sure about the tent, until it rains. Then I'm glad I bring it…Same bag, and REI 2 plus tent (bonus it can be used as a rainfly only with ground tarp and a thermarest. I haven't done any motocamping with them, but plan to soon. I have an RK so I have plenty of room, but the bag, pad, and tent will all fit easily in the rather small saddle bags of my RK.

I have thought that a tarp and a hammock would be a great option and super minimal, but haven't tried it yet. Bring rope! I'm always wishing I would have brought more.

When winter Jeep camping in the woods I'd put a small tarp down and make a bed. Then suspend a larger tarp overhead with all the sides open so I could see all around. Just me.
