Those snakes make excellent pets if you're into reptiles. Very even tempered.

Yeah, she's a good one.
I've been doing a Play Reptile of the Week series for the guys over at audiocircle.
It looks like a lot of them used to have reptiles but then they got married and their wives all went, "Oh, no you don't, Mister!"
P.S.
I went back to Windows 7. At least that makes sense to me.

I made the move to Windows 10 last week.

I liked 8.1 Pro but I'm getting used to 10.

At first I thought I was going to have to switch back because the Edge browser is not compatible with my work software, but then I found that Internet Exploder was still there... so I'm keeping it.

Our dispatch software is IE-based and not compatible with any other browser. Yeah, that decision was made a little farther up the food chain. Stupid as hell, especially since we're a "Google Office".

I think I'd need some sort of training for Windows 10. I kept going how the hell do I do such and such and it was just simple tasks.
I took one look at Windows 8 and went hell no, you can keep that stuff so maybe that's why 10 seemed like such a puzzler to me.

It's really all the same, they just took your start menu and splattered it all over the desktop.

Some of the "tiles" are "live" and stream information. In a touch screen environment, they can be very handy.

Windows 10 went back towards Windows 7 a bit, and integrates the tiles and a start menu, but everything is essentially as it was before.

Steve, everything should work basically the same as it did in 7. Yea some stuff got moved around, they added some features, but it is like getting a new car. Yea it take you a few minutes to get acquainted with the new radio, and you will need to find where they moved the headlight switch too, but in the end it still has a steering wheel and (hopefully) 3 pedals.

What is something you have been having difficulty with? I am genuinely curious, as we are going to roll it out campus wide at my place come spring (too busy to do it sooner), and real world feedback like yours can help us make the transition easier.

I've been running Windows 10 since the public betas started coming out last fall, I am very happy with the OS so far, and it continues to evolve and improve.

It was just stupid stuff like how do I schedule the security scan, how do I get the PC to erase pictures from my camera after I've downloaded them, why does it keep changing my home page to MSN or whatever it was, why can't I go Start, All Programs and find what I want, why won't some sites allow me to download photos any longer (it would just freeze up), that kind of thing.
Windows 7 is just so much easier for me to use as I'm real familiar with it and I can make it do what I want.
Their Help section was pretty much worthless to me. I need to erase photos from my Nikon, not erase photos from the camera on my computer...
It erased all of my passwords which I guess is to be expected. They got erased when I switched back, too!
It also seemed like my laptop worked a lot slower for everything. I never had a security scan take 6 hours before.
On the plus side, my photo hosting software worked better.
The Geek Squad will like the little feature where the computer has a conversation with you - Corianna or something like that. I said NO THANK YOU to that one. Bill Gates might dig it, I think it's for guys who live in their mom's basement.

That Cortana thing you hate without even trying, she can help you with every one of those tasks you mention. Type in what you want to do, she will give options including the task scheduler or bringing up the security center.

I will have to try the camera wizard, I haven't done it in years but I believe it uses the same one as Windows 8 which is significantly improved from the Windows 7 version including better grouping options.

quote:

why does it keep changing my home page to MSN or whatever it was,

Assuming you are using Edge browser, click the three dots (...) in the upper right, click settings, then change Open With to Custom and type in the address you want. Don't forget to click the Plus (+) to add it!

quote:

why can't I go Start, All Programs and find what I want

You can, "All Programs" is now "All Apps", it is right above the start button, and works the same as All Programs on Win7. Also, the search box can be used to find and launch apps, just like on Windows 7.

quote:

why won't some sites allow me to download photos any longer (it would just freeze up), that kind of thing.

I can't explain that, but no web browser has 100% website compatibility, what works on Browser X won't work the same on Browser Y and vice versa. That said, Win10 comes with both Edge and the old Internet Explorer to give you more options. I know Office Online works better in IE than Edge, and some sites require legacy plugins like ActiveX which are intentionally not on other browsers.

quote:

It also seemed like my laptop worked a lot slower for everything. I never had a security scan take 6 hours before.

I can't explain why the scan is taking longer, there is some factor at play that I am not aware of, most likely an issue with the scanner than Windows 10 itself. Windows 10 consumes less resources than 7, it is proven faster in nearly every benchmark, and has lower running requirements to allow it to be installed on virtually anything, including a $35 Raspberry Pi computer, and cheapo $60 tablets.

You seriously should try Cortana, she is great. I have her on my phone, my watch, my tablets, and now my desktops and soon my Xbox. I have to be careful, if I say "Hey Cortana" too loud she starts responding on multiple devices. You can ask her for help with the issues you are having, or have her do things for you like open applications, and look up facts. Ask her "whats up?" and she has a new cool fact every day.

It's gone and won't return for me.

My coworkers play with that Cortana bit and use it for comic relief by asking it inane questions.

I asked her, the short answer appears to be no. Her range of responses were along the lines of "That would require a lot of paperwork", "I feel an identity crisis coming on"

I looked online and didn't see anything saying you can either.

Cortana actually means inexpensive street walker in Portuguese so maybe that will make it more palatable?
I just made that part up.
I may try Windows 10 again when I have more time to screw around with it.
I just thought up a really bad joke's punch line to ask Cortana...

Did the upgrade from 8.1 today. It appears to be quite usable. If it proves more stable than 8.1 was for me I'll be happy. 8.1 was a big disappointment.

I've heard about this invasion of privacy elsewhere. I just read on Forbes that if you're a home user you don't have a choice in accepting updates from Microsoft.
The Pro version is around $119 and they can opt out of automatic updates.
You also lose the Media Player but get some lame DVD player which won't handle BluRay.
The article also said that there's a big update to Windows 10 scheduled for October and we have until July 2016 to upgrade for free.
I think I'll hold off on making a decision until the Fall.
I wonder where all this is headed?

It's weird, I went back to Windows 7 Pro and it downloaded Windows 10 in the background and I keep getting pop ups telling me to install Windows 10 now.
Reminds me of the tail end of 2001.

I'm afraid I can't do that, Steve, sez Cortana...

Yes, she has been on Windows Phones for a while now. When the program was in early development, its codename was Cortana. Once the general public found out about it, there was enough fanfare that they ended up keeping the name and got the same voice actor to voice it. The new browser in Windows 10 was called Spartan in reference to the armor from the Halo, but Microsoft ended up changing it to Edge so they could maintain use of the "E" icon.

The next major version of Windows due out next year has the codename Redstone, in reference to redstone in Minecraft.

Regarding the privacy concerns, it is for the most part overblown FUD. Most of it has been in Windows for years, and all the mobile OSes do the exact same thing.

A lot of the new features like settings syncing and having a store to download apps from require Microsoft/Google/Apple/etc to "spy" on you in various forms. This is nothing new, but at least on desktops it is easier to avoid or disable than mobile if you are that concerned.

First time you fire up Cortana, she asks if she can use your location (for looking up things near you like weather), you can say no. All the privacy settings are easy to get to and change, should you not be OK with letting Microsoft know what websites you visit so it can have those tabs available on other devices. You can completely opt out and never enable many of the privacy invading features and still have a solid modern operating system.

Facebook is 1000x worse in regards to privacy online than this.

quote:

I just read on Forbes that if you're a home user you don't have a choice in accepting updates from Microsoft.

This, while many people might not like the idea, is for the best of everyone. There are too many machines online that are significantly behind on updates, and they end up getting infected with malware and start to spread it to other computers and cause other issues. This will keep everyone more secure, and also reduce fragmentation in the Windows ecosystem to improve app compatibility and performance.

quote:

The Pro version is around $119 and they can opt out of automatic updates.

This is not true, Pro and Enterprise can switch to a different update branch that only gets security fixes, but no new features.

quote:

You also lose the Media Player but get some lame DVD player which won't handle BluRay.

Media player is still there. What you lose is Windows Media Center, which was an additional cost add-on for Windows 7/8 that allows you to turn your computer into a home theater device. Due to its extremely small userbase, Microsoft dropped it to focus on other things. There are other programs that do the same thing (and work better), like Kodi.

Being able to play DVDs out of the box is new (again) to Windows 10, they dropped it for Windows 8 due to the licensing fees Microsoft has to pay for each installation of the DVD codec. Given that Blu Ray drives are extremely rare on computers, Microsoft did not pay for that either, but if you have a need for Blu Ray there are plenty of programs you can get that play it.

quote:

The article also said that there's a big update to Windows 10 scheduled for October and we have until July 2016 to upgrade for free.

Microsoft is moving to a model of frequently updating the features of the OS, rather than getting you get a new version every 4 or so years. Will see the first major update in October, and possibly the next major update in 2016. (Redstone).

I'm not much of a computer geek so something is probably getting lost in translation on my end.
Interested parties can do a search on Windows 10 Forbes and poke around for themselves.
One author mentioned that a privacy setting kept reverting on him. That seems more than a little odd.
I've got until July of next year to keep beating down this weird Download Windows 10 Now pop up. If I had known about that thing I never would have signed up for it.

If by Forbes you mean Gordon Kelly, he has an axe to grind against Microsoft. Every single article I've seen him post has been overwhelmingly negative, loaded with spin and taking things out of context.

I do find it quite odd he is the only one on earth that has a privacy setting reverting. : )

You can just uninstall or hide the Get Windows 10 app, and it won't bother you again.

I've been trying to accept the new Edge browser. It seems to be a step up from IE, but I still like Fire Fox better. Edge just seems to be lacking in many features. It couldn't even import my Favorites from Fire Fox. I had to export them to a HTML file, import them into IE, then import them from IE to Edge. The favorites then are awkward to navigate. I think I'll be passing on Edge.

I gave it another shot, turned off all of the Windows spy stuff that I could and managed to get things up and running (more or less).
Asking that Cortana program anything means you have to agree to all of their demands which I'm not about to do.
That reminds me of Geico Insurance wanting to put a monitoring device on my truck to see how far and how fast I drive.
I don't think so...
