What the heck is wrong with people and society? I just recently caught someone in a lie, a absolute bald-faced lie, and I am not supposed to call them out on it or bring attention to it because I might offend them!! So it is OK to lie but not offend someone???!!!

I tend to call people out on their dishonesty. I've lost friends over it in the past. Good riddance! I have better friends when they are honest. It has caused some friction with some of my in-laws though. Still, I just don't have tolerance for dishonesty.

Caught person building stairs in a rockwall without filing application with HOA. They called HOA and said they were "fixing" damaged stairs already in place.

Google Earth and Bing show no stairs in place up to 2013. So either lying outright or built stairs previously, with out approval.

Does this construction have a direct impact on public or your safety, or affect your property value?

I hate when HOA's attempt to run people's lives/stick their damn noses where they don't belong almost as much as I hate lying so...

This situation seems like a chicken/egg issue to me on both sides of it...

Would the guy have lied if there wasn't an HOA that kinda forced him to?

If there wasn't an HOA would you have decided to poke your nose in where it might not belong?

I am not engaging in a debate over HOAs or relative morality. This is why I did not give details in the first post.

My only comment is if you do not like HOAs do not live in a community that has one.

Lying is lying.

Home Owners' Association

You buy a house, you agree to, and sign, a covenant that states you will abide by rules such as "no parking on the street" or "paint your house a color from an approved list only" or "no weeds in your lawn"

The HOA is the governing body, to which annual dues are paid for the privilege of having somebody else decide what is acceptable or not on your property.

Failure to abide can result in a lein on your mortgage and subsequent forfeiture of said property in extreme circumstances.

BINGO

What's a HOA?

It's supposed to prevent your neighborhood from becoming west Baltimore over time

I live out in the sticks, no HOA. Most of the ones I'm experienced with (DC area) are simply designed to "keep the neighborhood nice" as stated above.

However.

There are SOME that have actual purpose. My parent's neighborhood, for example - they're in a gated community and have the usual HOA covenants: no cars in the driveway for more than 24 hours without a pass, no outside construction without approval, use approved colors to paint, etc. But, their HOA gives back - my parents haven't owned (or needed) a lawn mower, pruning shears, shovel or rake for the last 25 years. Their lot is probably a half acre (ish), lakefront, corner lot, and it always looks amazing. As does the entire community - they do a great job keeping things looking good, and being a gated community the HOA also sponsors the on-site EMS - they have their own fire, rescue, and transport facility.

THAT, in my mind, is what an HOA is supposed to do. Unfortunately though, most of them in this area (DC/MD/VA) simply collect dues and tell you what color you can and can't paint your porch.
