My wife and I just dropped our youngest son at the recruiting station for his trip to basic. He has turned into a fine young man in spite of me. I feel like my little boy has passed from me. Please, say a prayer for us all.

Congratulations ...... You've every reason to be very proud.

He'll do an amazing job ..... Learn more than you can imagine ...... And finish with training, discipline and poise beyond belief.

I know you ...... He's well equipped to be the best he can be!

That's exciting.

Congratulations. Wishing you and yours the best.

I kind of know how you feel. This seems like a time where sad and proud get blended together to form a young adult.

I have a granddaughter who just signed up for the army. She did four years or so of ROTC in school. She leaves in a couple of months, right after her early High School graduation.

Congratulations and sympathies. I remember well that day. You raise them right and let them go to make their way. Not easy though.

Write lots of letters!

Take it from someone who was deployed a lot.
There is almost NOTHING better than hearing your name at "Mail Call"

There is something about that piece of paper in your footlocker.
When you start to feel a little homesick, you can always get it out, read a little and feel a little closer to home.

Congratulations!!

I must have got some dirt in my eyes while cleaning the gutters. I talked to him on the phone tonight, they will collect his cell phone tomorrow. Felt like I lost my best friend when I dropped him off. I should get to call him in a few months. That will make it easier. Just so odd to me in that my parents didn't miss me when I went. I am proud of him. And I know it's all for the best. May even make for a bike trip excuse in a year or two. I've settled down a little. Thanks for all the kind words and support.

If you get a chance, go to his graduation from basic. You'll meet the most polite person you've ever seen. We took our daughter out to dinner after graduating and she was saying "Yes, ma'am" and "No thank you, ma'am" to the coffee shop waitress.

The military does a great job of finishing what you started with your son.

Congrats, Ourdee- although you won't have any new info for a while, be sure to keep us posted on your son's progress when you can.

Due to medical issues I've never had the opportunity to serve our country, nor do I have kids... I always admire and deeply appreciate the folks in uniform.

I'm currently on the back side of my 20 year stint. You've raised a good boy and have much to be proud of. He's made a decision that will bless him well into his twilight years, but will find himself in some of the most aggravating ignorant situations imaginable. if you ever need anyone to talk to or explain some things that seem outright ignorant, shoot me a pm and I'll give you my number. And yes, write tons of letters. mail call is the best part of the day.

I went through Basic in 1983. The pre-email era. Even to this day, occasionally I will still sit down and literally pen out a letter and snail mail it. There is something deeply personal -- to both ends -- about a handwritten letter. One's handwriting, aka 'chicken scratch', is as personal as one's face. I still have all letters from family and friends. I see postal stamps from Hawaii, California, Florida, Okinawa, England, Spain, Germany, Italy, and France.

If there is something time urgent and/or important, send an email, otherwise, take time and write, even if it is just one page to say everything is normal at home. Basic Training is not normal and we who have gone thru that want a reminder of what is normal.

Good luck to you and your son.

God bless you sir, for raising a young man with a sense of duty and honor.

Further, may God bless your son in all that he does.

Genesis 14:20 And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.

Isaiah 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Go forth, and do good in the world!

A big thank you to everyone that has replied. It means a lot to me. I went through basic in 78 a month later in the year and a couple hundred miles from where he is. I had experiences that wouldn't be traded if I could and I lost friends that I'd have given anything to bring them back. My fear for his safety hardly exists. I have great confidence in him and his God. I just miss him more than could have been foreseen. He is an incredible young man. He can do anything he sets his mind to. Thanks again.

My nephews went in as kids. They came back as amazing young men. I expect no less will happen with your son. He's already done what only a small minority choose to take on. The sacrifices of military families is real though. Make the most of any chances to communicate. It helps everyone get through it.

Reading the thoughts on writing has gave me an idea. I need to keep a log of thoughts and put them into letters to him. I can keep the log to give or pass on to him as a collective at a later date. He won't loose anything if he looses the letters.

Ourdee, I too remember the day we dropped my son off at a local hotel the night before he went to basic. Probably one of the toughest days ever. Then the phone call the next day that he arrived. A few days after that we received a package with all his "civie" stuff.
That made it pretty real.
I'll echo what Sifo said, came back a changed person. Made Mom and Dad pretty proud parents. All told he did 6 years in the Navy on a sub. He's got some pretty neat stories..

This really brings back memories.

I'm not sure if I'll save a log copy or just keep mailing it all to him. This has made me question weather or not I redeem the time wisely. I question the time I spend doing frivolous things that kill time. I have always kept a game or two on my phone and use them to pass time when I'm bored. I don't want to miss out on living life with friends all around. Things I've done since this weekend so far besides my employment. 2 Church services, Power-washed the house, deck, and back porch. Bought enough paint for 2500 square feet. Tore the roof off the back porch. Shot a round of hunter archery targets in the woods. Got my weight down to 168.6. 3.6 pounds left to go. Got a wellness check up and passed everything with good numbers. Talked to my wife and came to an agreement to have the house ready to sell in a couple of weeks. I know I'm missing a few things, but I'm trying to keep busy.
