So you might be asking "Why is Tracey's Sportster in the back of that pickup truck?" Weeeelllllll the answer would be that she got into a little accident. Coming home from the Wahine Run just before getting to Honaunau and saw rain. So we started to pull over when she hit a patch of oil and went down doing about 10 to 15 mph. She has some road rash and one small cut above her right eye. The helmet did it's job and the bike protected her. It's not if but when riding motorcycles. I saw it in my mirror and nothing will make your heart jump into your throat and drop your stomach into your shorts like seeing your wife go down on a motorcycle.  The long scrape was her brake pedal   The blue spot in the middle of the picture, next to the white line is where her helmet hit  A bump and a cut  The worst of the road rash   Time for a new helmet  Heading back home (Message edited by big island rider on July 26, 2015) | ||

I'm certainly glad it wasn't worse, and I'll pray for her speedy recovery. Please consider a full face helmet for the replacement, and a jacket. I know it's hot in Hawaii, but mesh gear can be very effective. | ||

Went down head first in the era of old helmet technology. Shattered the helmet and walked away. Now I ride with a full-face, high end racing helmet. I got a free do-over, but am not counting on another. Glad she is o.k. and hope the bike is repairable. | ||

dang buddy, hope she heals up quickly! sorry to see those pics, make me grimace from imagining the pain, and that bump on the head doesnt look good. But glad to see she made it out, overall, in good condition! | ||

Thanks all for the thoughts and well wishes. She has always preferred open face helmets, as do I when I wear one.  I do wear a full face on Toothless. We have leathers and Joe Rocket gear and yes should wear them more often as well. It's all about the assumption of risk when getting on a bike. Tracey is a nurse, I am a soccer referee and well versed in concussion protocols. I did a roadside concussion check and an ER nurse friend did one later as well. Tracey is feeling better and worse. Better - The road rash is looking better after another round of wound care. Worse - The bruising and soreness is starting to set in.   | ||

Definitely looks better now than it did before! You're absolutely right about assumption of risk. I didn't mean to sound preachy about gear... hell, I grew up riding around Southern California on fast bikes with no gear at all... long hair flying, shorts, tank top, tennis shoes... Glad she's on the mend! | ||

"Hate the debride process." I've found out the hard way that I'm allergic to pavement... OWIE!!! SO glad she's OK and healing, glad to see that bright smile in the last pic! I'm sure you're using the best meds and creams for that rash, but if you see some good cocoa butter, that'll help too. "Assumption of risk"- true dat. When I go poking around town on errands or to the grocery on my old Beemer, I'll go with shorts, Tshirt, and my Crocs- if I go out on my Triumph, I gear up. But never without my fullface. NEVER want to eat gravel, wasps/bees/junebugs, what have you. Plus, I believe the studies that predict high probability of a faceplant in the event of a crash. Keep us posted on how things progress and heal, thanks for sharing. | ||

No need to worry about being "preachy", I know it is coming from caring about us not trying to control. Sometimes we all need a gentle reminder, or in my case a swift kick in the ass. Yeah cleaning up road rash sucks. She showers with the bandages on, gets them soaked, takes them off, cleans with soap using her hand, puts washcloth over rash area to rinse, washes with washcloth and rinse again with washcloth over area. Best way to clean I have ever found. Hope you never need to use it. | ||

Mesh jackets! I've crash tested mesh gear and literally walked away with out a scratch or bruise. Had plenty of soreness, but nothing that required more than advil for treatment. I actually find them more comfortable too in the heat. Keeps the sun off you while obviously flowing tons of air. | ||

Glad she's recovering. You're probably BOTH aware of Xeroform... but I STRONGLY recommend Xeroform bandages for road rash. WELL WORTH THE MONEY when you have to change bandages on a daily basis. In a dozen years of racing, I've needed to do bandage changing too many times. http://www.xeroform.us/ It's not worth the pain of peeling gauze off of wounds. Again - apologize if you're probably familiar with Xeroform. GLAD it's an "all's well that ends well" situation for you both and now that I got THAT outta the way, glad the bike is only minor! | ||

Best wishes for Tracey and healing up quickly! My spousal unit chose to put her bike on a curb in right hand turn instead of taking on a ford truck running thru a red light. I never questioned her choice as I still have her but er and xrays on sunday afternoon sucked. Right shoulder hurt for a long time and eventually wound up in surgery for a torn up rotator cuff. she said that crap hurt bad. One of those afternoons of choices, she said she could count the pimples on that kids face as he went thru the intersection as she went down. Only time one of us has been down in 40 years of riding. knock on wood. We have been blessed as other stories are shared of accidents. some not as minor or involving animals. anyhow, best wishes and prayers for better times. |
