That is cool, Ratbuell! When my dad died he left a wagon exactly like that, even to the color. It was completely bare-bones but if I recall right had a 440. It was fast. I drove it a lot but my mother eventually gave it to my d-bag brother-in-law. I should have told her I wanted it but I did not get to appreciate wagons until I bought my Roadmaster. BTW, I have to weigh in on this 'sport wagon' term. IMO, if it does not have a side-facing or rear-facing fold down third seat it is not a wagon, but a hatchback. If it has a third row seat but the car is taller than it is wide, it's a minivan or an SUV. I'm not sure real wagons are made anymore. Flame suit on.

The '72 had an option for a rear facing 3rd row.

Mine, however, did not have that option.

The floorpan is still scooped, though, and the trunk floor is a hinged piece of plywood with carpet on it.

Big, bad-ASS beer cooler in college!! Still have the drain plug in it!

If it didn't have holes in the (unobtanium) fuel tank....genius engineers put it in the drivers quarter panel behind the tire. ANY road debris bounces right off the bottom.

And punches holes.

Been thinking about it.

Found a place who does custom fab tanks to your specs. For around thirteen HUNDRED dollars.

I like the stock sleeper look - till I open the hood, I want it to look like an old station wagon, nothing more (well, with a nice set of wheels on it).

I do know where there's a 73 Coronet wagon in a local junkyard - going to go see if it has a fuel tank in it still. If I can keep the stock location (with some updates for debris protection)...that's first choice for me.

I'll have to disagree with that, my parents had a '58 Nomad in all its yellow and chromed glory. Filled with kids and towing a matching boat and trailer full of camping gear that was definitely a station wagon. I don't recall that having a 3rd seat.

My brother's friend's family had one of my favorites, a '69 Country Squire, white/wood with the 429, nice. While I was growing up seems many of our neighbors and friends had an American wagon in the driveway, must have been a 50's-60's thing.

I know where there's an intact 1960 Ford Country Squire sitting, whenever we pass it on our remote rides I point it out to my wife who scoffs, I don't think she knows how seriously I want that car.

I agree, a Nomad is definitely a wagon, and a special one at that. I am unsure if it had a third seat and have never thought about it. I see a '56 Chevy two-door wagon running around my neighborhood sometimes but it's more of a utility vehicle. It may not even have a back seat, I don't know. I've never seen another like it. I learned to drive in my Mom's '65 Country Squire wagon with 352, 4-bbl, and dual exhausts. It had huge front brakes and I remember how mad my dad was once when I casually mentioned that in my opinion it didn't have enough brakes because I could make them fade.

I wish they still made the big wagons of yesterday ... the Magnum is the closest we got to that resurrection. Awesome rides, guys.

The Audi is mine--picked it up Monday evening and left the Jeep behind! Man, that nagging onion smell getting into my eyes again ...

But the B7 A4 is a sweet ride!

Yep, I have a 2009 Sportwagen TDI.

I wonder if the software fix will ruin the performance. I may be buying that Bully Dog box after all.

Or not bringing it in at all.

EPA said VW must fix the vehicles, but didn’t formally order a recall. EPA said “owners should know that although these vehicles have emissions exceeding standards, these violations do not present a safety hazard and the cars remain legal to drive and resell. Owners of cars of these models and years do not need to take any action at this time.”

Or...the EPA is lying...or doesn't understand what they're looking at. For quite some time VW was playing with the idea of altering the fuel map periodically to heat up the cat to burn off the soot. They may have programmed the ECM to never enter that mode during an emissions test before abandoning that idea and going with the liquid catalyst like everyone else did. EPA could be looking at inactive code. Or, since it's entirely peopled with anti-carbon enviro-wackjobs, they could simply be making headlines they know aren't true, knowing that if they're wrong, it won't get any press, and the black mark against clean diesel will stick.

Or VW could be pulling a fast one. My gut says EPA is full of it. I'm probably wrong.

I used to have an '85 Chevy Astro Panel van with a fiberglass high top and a built 355 V8 and 700R4. It was ugly as sin, but damn it was fun!

Hoot, my 2009 TDI uses the "afterburner" method with no fluid injection. The next year they went to fluid injection.

It's a bit odd at first to park the car during the burn cycle. Fans running like mad and much heat underneath. I don't park on dry grass. ( it does help keep the weeds under the car in check )

General Motors and the deliberate evasions on cheap ignition switches would tend to make me distrust upper car company management.

Otoh, the E.P.A. during this administration has a history of criminal dishonesty, using fake email addresses to evade oversight, and outright fraud at the policy level.....

So who do you trust less?

Looks increasingly like VW was pulling a fast one. Or a slow one. They've been telling EPA their testing was faulty for years. There's talk of holding senior managers personally responsible for the fines, since something like this could not have happened without their knowledge.

As has been noted in the press, there have been no fatal accidents as a result of this (unlike the lies GM and Toyota told) so there should be no long term impact. Their stock tanked yesterday...might be a good time to buy.

I've been shopping for a Conversion van, as a second vehicle. ( camping, hauling 2x4's, etc. ) But now with the TDI business, while I luv the Sportwagen.........Since I don't know if/how long/when the VW will be in the shop, I may need a long term replacement, so Mileage is again a factor.... so...

I'm thinking Subaru. Forester? Outback?

Wagon, definitely.

I unfortunately know diddle about Subarus as far as year by year variations... And the darn things just keep getting bigger?

So What are the good years for Foresters & Outbacks?

I want more cubic feet in the back than the Sportwagen, and the best blend of handling, snow capacity, and comfort.

And I've been watching Hot Rod videos, so I wonder what's the best wagon to get to later stuff a built WRX STI engine in.... ?

I like sleepers.. ; )
