We do not always remember ancestors who fought in the War of Independence because it is so far back. Yet today is a day to remember one, GreatX5 grandfather Joseph Procter, 1st Lieutenant, 6th Regiment, 6th Company formed at Gloucester MA. under command of Captain Jacob Allen.

Painting of Surrender of British General John Burgoyne and his 6200 soldiers to General Gates at Saratoga, New York on October 17, 1777. This painting depicts General Burgoyne prepared to surrender his sword to General Gates. Gates, showing respect for Burgoyne, refuses to take the sword and instead offers hospitality by directing Burgoyne to the tent the American flag flies above. American officers gather at the sides to witness the event; their varied dress reflects their different units. Sadly, Captain Allen was killed during the Battle of Saratoga three weeks before this surrender. (Painting hangs in US Capitol Rotunda)

I'm sitting in Du Quoin, Illinois at a McDonald's having breakfast. Today and tonight, I'm going to be watching the best motorcycle Flat Trackers in the world competing on a one mile dirt oval (a uniquely American form of racing), followed by Fireworks.

I can't think of a more American way to spend the Fourth of July!
