Ok Troops.

Is there a Buell friendly HD dealer in the Houston/Galveston area? I was riding last night and got check engine light last night.

2009 XB12XT

Had been riding for about 35 minutes at a constant 60 - 65 mph and the light came on. Slowed down for a while and the light went off for maybe 3 or 4 minutes. Then light came on and stayed on until I shut the engine down.

On the way home light came on after about a minute of run time at slow speeds. Engine ran rough at idle but seemed to smooth out again above 1500 rpm. When I got home, turn off the engine, immediately started it back up and CEL did not come one.

Wondering if it is the O2 sensor again.

The only other possibility is the bike was complaining because there weren't enough curves.

Zane,

I saw a post here recently that sounds like the exact symptoms you describe and I think it turned out to be the O2 sensor or intake leak. I only have experience with the carbureted M2, I wish I could provide real assistance.

As for HD dealers that are friendly to Buell, I'd have to say GOE in Angleton, TX. It's not close by any means but even if it was in Houston it wouldn't be close.

The only other one I know/knew of in the area is Mancuso-Central located at 535 N Loop W Fwy Houston, TX. Mancuso has great parts guys that are Buell friendly but I can't say about the service guys, I just don't know. The sales guys used to hide the Buells in the deepest, darkest corner and ask you why you don't want to look at a real motorcycle. First thing I notice approaching the front door they had an upside-down Buell sticker on the trash can. I'm not even sure if Mancuso has retained the Buell service status.

You might give this independent shop a call. It's Jim's in Alvin.

Jim's got great reviews and I used him for a top end refresh and was very pleased with his work and he's a super nice guy too.

I should add that I like San Jacinto HD on the Beltway in Pasadena. They were never a Buell service/parts dealer but they have some of the nicest people working there. I get non-Buell specific parts from them all the time. I have talked issues with some of the service guys before and they were very friendly and eager to help with knowledge and suggestions but I never tried to see if they could or would service my Buell. I will do all of my own service if I can. My guess is that any non Buell HD place would probably not have a labor sheet specific to the Buell and wouldn't be able to get the job through their system. I wanted to be sure to mention them thought as my HD of choice in the area.

Stubbs isn't too bad for parts either.

It's a hike I know but I've always used Independence HD in College Station. Straight up operation and they know Buells.

Thanks guys. That's exactly what I need.

I agree it is most likely an O2 sensor. I had to replace the original one last August and it acted exactly the same way.

I've been riding back and forth to work which is just over a mile. With coming home for lunch call it 4 1 mile trips a day. Wondering if that would gunk up the O2 sensor and cause it to fail this soon.

Another vote for Goe in Angleton.

Not really impressed with Mancuso to say the least...

"riding just over a mile"...

When I worked for Smoky Mountain HD/BUELL, our service manager would get tweaked just by us sales guys starting, riding, parking, and shutting off bikes for display up front... his argument, which is valid, is that the HD motors need a full "heat cycle" to not be hurt/damaged/what have ye. If you're in the habit of using the bike for "4 one mile trips a day", you're never putting it through a full heat cycle. I'd bet that would foul an 02 sensor, if not other things as well.

Go on a good, one or two hour at least ride as often as you can, give it the berries, and take better care of that issue. A one mile ride? Maybe bicycle, or electric/bike hybrid?

Good luck...

Squids,

Did just that this weekend. Rode 2 up for about 100 miles Saturday morning. Speeds were mostly in the 60-70 mph range. Sunday I did a solo ride of about 75 miles at speeds around65 - 80 mph. It seemed a bit better after that. CEL still came on but not as fast and tried a couple of times to go out. I plan to flog it a little bit more tonight after work.

Do you think any additives like sea foam or some other F.I. cleaner might help or would it just gum up the works more?

Sea Foam is the ticket- my mechanic always recommends it for cleaning up gunky fuel problems. I'd grab 2 or 3 bottles (might be on sale, depending on the shop) just to keep around, keep one in a saddlebag, with the cap on tight... ; )

Sounds like a plan. I need to gas up the XT anyway. Might be a good time to throw in a cap full or two. Then maybe a spirited 50 mile or so ride.

See about getting the no-ethanol stuff, and be generous with the SeaFoam. When you get a chance, for a +- 1 mile commute, I'd get an electric-assist bicycle, scooter or something. My old service manager insisted that any HD motor needs to run 30 minutes to get everything up to operating temps...

Good luck!

Actually a bicycle makes a lot of sense. It would give me a little cardio which I really do need. I just wanted to get a decent grill first. A fat man has to have his priorities...lol

CL for the grill and bike- if you have a Habitat for Humanity close by, you might find a cheap bike there. The one near us has always had decent bicycles, and occasionally has a used grill... be careful buying a new grill THIS time of year though.

I was given the grill I have for free, use the heck out of it, trying to do more rotisserie stuff... did an 8.5# Boston butt a while back.

Glad to help, buddy!

Yeah. I was spoiled with my last grill. It was a 3 burner Webber. Controlled the heat well and lasted 10 years before the chlorine vapors from the pool corroded the frame past using. In the area right now the new version is almost $500. I'm too frugal (read cheap) for that.

Same with the bike. CL for sure. My last bike I had for 15 years and God alone knows how many miles was on it. I'll get a used Trek or if I can find a deal, maybe a Cannondale. I need the exercise anyway.

I ran out at lunch and got a can of Sea Foam so when I tank up tonight I'll be good to go.

Thanks Squids and everyone for the input.

I'd keep the hairy eyeball on Craigslist. With the 4th coming up, maybe someone's getting a Bday grill, or whatever. People upgrade all the time, or maybe they'll have one that "they never use", or...

You should be able to get a good used grill for two or three Bennies, max. Our Habitat has ALL kinds of stuff, even roofing shingles and other building materials... I picked up my well-outfitted 55 gallon aquarium there!

Yes, Grills and bikes neither one hold their value. I'll put my room mate on the job. She's tighter than a mallard's rear end. That's water tight...lol

Seriously she'd great at finding deals and squeezing the most out of a buck.

wife noted the other day that goe had pulled their buell sign down. dont know what that means as i haven't been in that place since 03. there never has been any kind of ebr sign up at the goe kawasaki dealership. last i did business with a buell dealer was mancuso at their crossroads location. I have the old ecmspy on laptop if that would work on your 09 Zane. on notebook , I have ecmspy for mono but that is tied to my 07 ddfi2 12x. dont know if we can use that on your 09. If you need some help, holler and well see what we can get going. Take care!
