Vern... you will love these wheels!
Found a nail in one of the wife's tires.
That cost me a set of new tires, wheels, lower ball joints and a tie rod end.

Went into the woods to cut down another tree for firewood.
I ran over a 3" sapling.... and....

Glad it happened right behind my house!
I spent more time going to and coming from the parts store than it took to fix

20 minutes later

Just look at the size of those baby tie rod ends. Tisk tisk. A man with fore thought would have beefed that stuff up before putting on those big tires!

and so his chain is pulled...........

I think it was about three thousand posts ago that I told you this would happen!

I just sold my Scout, and get to refurbish it for the customer. Body off rebuild and paint job, I love it when people want to do things correctly!

OK, so bambi sucks.

Either that, or my XJ is a magnet for deer. I've owned it five years...hit 2 of the bastards with it.

Friday night, coming home from a show:

Walked out of the woods about six miles from home. Big sucker, missed the bumper but went right through the grille, radiator, and trans cooler. I could have nursed it home...but the trans pissed out all the ATF and all I had was neutral. So, at 1:30 in the morning, I parked at an elementary school and walked 4 miles home to get my Cummins and tow dolly. Got to bed at 3:30 (walked the 4 miles - up a mountain - in 45 minutes, not bad for an old fart like me).

So, Jeep-heads...I'll be replacing the cooler and radiator, and apparently at least one brake line because the panic stop blew something and I have zero brakes. My question is lighting and protection - I want to get a decent but not too pricey (I know, get whatcha pay for...) front bumper/bull bar/guard/something to keep these wood rats out of my radiator, and I want to get some better lighting. I had stock sealed beams with a set of Hella 700FF fogs (now one remaining).

I have no use for a winch or winch mount.

I don't want it to look too mad-max.

I want front end protection, and good lighting.

I'm thinking some Hella E-code conversion headlights to start. Looking at the Hella (and I'm not brand-specific, just going with optics that I know are good) "cornering beam" lights because they appear to be a long-range fog - wide, low, should pick the bastards out while they're still on the shoulders for me.

Any thoughts? Recommendations?

Keep in mind, this is my "disposable" $400 Jeep. I don't want to go broke on this stuff, but I want to keep from replacing as much stuff every time. And hopefully fixing the brakes will be an "upgrade" as well- panic stops in this thing have always sucked, and with 250k+ miles I'm guessing stuff has been on the way out for a while.

Take a look at 'Rough Country' on line. I have been moving their stuff through my shop. If you find what you want call me, they will drop ship direct, I probably can help.

I also build custom stuff, or I can modify used stuff you might find laying around.

You guys crack me up. pmsl.

I'm about to get rid of a Jeep.
Yes it's true, the soon to be ex has returned to France so the 03 Liberty 3.7 is going to go, I still have the WJ but it needs some love, leaky radiator, broken front wheel stud, slipping trans, & other odd bits & bobs that need doing. But it's being kept as a going to work car/spare & will get fettled when I have a garage, it's 4.7 is running sweetly still & the interior is still pretty good even after 270,000km.
The Hemi powered WK Limited is a treat to drive & is going to be the every day & tow vehicle.
Liberty is going to get swapped for a magic carpet ride, probably a Mercury Grand Marquis, unless I fall over a big late '60s - early '70s Mopar Sedan.

Vern - hmm...may take you up on that. Although they only seem to offer a winch bumper, and a 'light bar' or 'stinger bar' for it. It's super-90's...but I'm thinking more of a thick-wall bumper, with a push bar and grille guard / headlight hoops, to try and keep the bastards out of my lights and radiator.

Thoughts?

Grumps - the Liberty is actually a pretty capable little truckster. For reliability, I'd go with that over the WJ (speaking as an ex-Jeep service manager). But if you want a tinker-toy, the WJ will definitely keep you busy. But I'll be happy to keep an eye out for an old sedan for ya : )

...thats why my '03 Liberty 3.7 Limited left with the ex... : ) Gave her the 05 Cummins, too. I never did want that automatic, and now I have a gorgeous '01 Cummins 6 speed stick.

If I can find a loaner Jeep of the same vintage and body locally I could build a bolt on for you.

I could make one where they slide under for a complete vehicle critter roll under mashing them as you run over them, or one that slices them to be parted for easy removal, or we could spear them for fresh take home BBQ meat, then there is the old train 'cow catcher' that'll scoot them off either side unless you connect with it directly in the middle.

Liberty is GONE, hooray!

Just done a swap for an 02 Mercury Grand Marquis LS, full history, every bill since new and only 99,000 km (about 62,000 miles).

Clean inside and out drives very nice except for shuddery brakes, that's no sweat as I don't mind doing a brake overhaul on a new (to me) vehicle.

So...anyone have experience with Or-Fab rock slider tubular bumpers? Specifically, their strength for things like hitting deer?

I like the look, I like the fact I can put large lights under the bull bar, and mount smaller shoulder-focused lights IN the bumper under the headlights. I'm just concerned - will a tubular bumper be any stronger than a factory one in case of an impact?

The one I REALLY like is the Warrior Products 56051 - protection hoops for headlights as well as grille, and a nice beefy main bumper beam.

Problem is, it's PRICEY. : (

Anyone know where I can find one of these for my YJ? It got a little too close to my spotlight. It's the piece that bolts up to the filler tube.
