If you truly want durable, you can't get anything nice. Plastic screens and shells on cheaper models hold up to abuse better than the glass and aluminum found on the latest overpriced delicate flowers from Apple and Samsung. I watched as my $20 Nokia 521 literally bounced down the highway and was run over who knows how many times before I could safely get back to it, I put the battery back in and back onto my RAM mount and it fired back up and it continues working till this day. |

I've got the HTC One Mini, and it's been very durable with no case on it... several trips down a concrete staircase, some face-down sliding across pavement, and other various falls have not killed it... ...until I was riding with the wife on Sunday and the sky opened up, soaking us and all the contents of our pockets. I had forgotten to put the phone in the ziploc bag I always carry to keep my phone dry, and now it is acting crazy. I've been seriously considering a rugged flip phone for text and talk, and get a separate hotspot device to run my laptop and tablets. |

"until I was riding with the wife on Sunday and the sky opened up, soaking us and all the contents of our pockets" I'm sure you know about putting the phone in rice to dry it out. Did you get the wife friendly cruiser you'd been looking at? |

No cruiser yet, we're looking at one of these instead... With the idea that we can still have a lot of fun with it, and she can drive it also.
And yes, I know about the rice, but we didn't get that far. The phone heated itself up so much I think it cooked the water out... but now the power button doesn't quite work properly. So, it's working, but not perfect like it was but I've bought some time, it's got a little life left in it. |

Pwn there are various water resistant cases for smartphones. I believe otter box makes one |

Andy, I'm aware of those cases but they take a small phone and make it large... so I'm being picky here. There are plenty of "active" phones that are waterproof, my wife's S5 for example was completely unaffected by the downpour. I think I'm really leaning toward a rugged flip phone and a separate hot spot device for internet service. |
