My 2006 XB12X was taken out Wednesday night by a hit and run driver who was trying to flee the scene after hitting the car in front of me. The bike looks repairable to me but the insurance adjuster said they would rather give me $5500 for it, which is probably more than I could have hoped to sell it for. I suffered a compound fracture in my right ankle where I was struck by the car. Doc says I should be up and walking again before summer is over

There will be a ton of hidden damage to that bike. You might be able to buy it back from the insurance company on salvage title, meaning they will cut you a $3300 check or something but let you keep the bike, and you can do what you want from there.

But like I said, there will be lots of hidden damage all over that thing.

Sorry about your ankle. If they are insured, that should be good for at least $30k in settlement.

If the insurance adjuster actually hands me a check for the amount stated I will happily take the money and run. What to replace the Uly with is the question.

I doubt the salvage value is more than a grand, but if you're handy, it might be worth it to tear it down and fix, but there will undoubtedly be tons of hidden damage. If so, it's probably worth a few grand if you were to part it out on your own.

Also, do a comparison of bikes for sale with comparable mileage in the area before accepting the check. My Harley was stolen in October, they low balled me. I did some research and ended up getting double the original offer from the insurance company. YMMV.

Hope the ankle heals well!

I thank God you came out on top of that situation.

Make sure you post up pictures of your replacement bike.

I hope you heal fast, and buy the bike you dream of. I also hope the police got the guy who hit and ran, (you did say "trying"), and the justice system makes an example of him. Hopefully he's got some a$$ets to sue off for that behavior.}
