This is one area I know we will never agree upon. Under the structure you propose truth could never have been known. If there is no authority Christianity would not exist. You might as well say Arius, Nestorius, Palegius, Marcion etc... were correct in there understanding because they were guided by the Holy Spirit. How is it possible for the individual to be given this amazing ability, and the Church some how is not? One really amazing thing is consider is the Catholic Church is a 2000 year old institution, entire civilizations have come and gone, no government, or any other institution has even remotely survived this long, it has to be guided by something greater that dumb luck. When Napoleon was on his rampage through Italy he told a Cardinal "I will destroy your Church" the Cardinal look at Napoleon and said "If we can't do it you cannot either". The Church is not a human institution, it is a divine institution because of Christ, I can't help if Christ selected fallible men to proclaim infallible truths, but He did. There must be an infallible authority, and it cannot be the individual, if not the faith becomes relativistic, and becomes false.

To be harsh.... because the company has lasted a long time it must be infallible is plain wrong. That just means they have profited enough to keep going. The mistakes made have to date been offset by cash reserves or bailouts.

Like General Motors. Still in business but do you want to buy the product?

And how many people buy the product has no relation to the perfection of that product.

Red Bull is foul crap but with clever marketing it's profitable.

The Church was once the biggest land owner in Europe.

Not sure how much of that wealth is still there.

Also if divine inspiration is unlikely for individuals then for a group of individuals it's equally unlikely.

Jesuit school and an adult appreciation for the difference between real math & statistics and false advertising. You use multiple false arguments.

That said, your choice. Enjoy with open eyes.

But I shouldn't pick on your giant organization. It's done tremendous good. Charity, the Crusades, held off illiteracy during the Dark Age, kept candle makers in business for centuries, etc.

And a thurible is a very cool accessory. I wonder if they will get popular in Denver?

And, unlike the fasted growing religion, the Church doesn't actively promote slavery. Or order women stoned to death for showing an ankle.

Or make it a Mitzva to lie, unlike the Obedient Islamists, the Marxist/Alinskyites and the Greenies. ( a subset of the neo-marxists, created by the Soviets )

Trying to get an Officer prosecuted for praying at a Prayer breakfast? Invited to a Christian group to speak and harassed for saying you are a Christian?

Gee, My response is unprintable.

Btw, since I'm not in the "turn the other cheek" religion, I feel free to treat threats and harassment with as much vigor as is expected of a Jihadi. Consider that anti-faith jerks when you pick on people. You can give a lot of crap to Christians, but not all of us are followers. I don't have horns or a tail, Don't bear the mark of Cain on my face, visibly, anyway, and you might mistake me for a follower of a Peaceful Christ.

Speaking of unpleasant folk...

Don't go to page 2 unless you wish to be offended.

By all means go with your God (s) and have a nice weekend. Bless you all.

Just wanted to share this . I know it is not directly related but this is an example of how I live my life.

This is a poem I wrote my daughter for her 18th birthday last week.

Have a great day.

The girl with blue eyes and yellow hair

My girl was tiny
She was full of innocence
She had blue eyes and yellow hair
She laughed
She sometimes cried
She had blue eyes and yellow hair

She was most beautiful
Her, with that caring way,
“I live you Daddy,” she would say
I picked her up and kissed her
We were always together, never apart
I taught her the things in life that were important
Respect nature, animals, and people
That spring peeper on a blade of grass that hot summer day
One of her earliest memories
She had blue eyes and yellow hair

She got older, so did I
Teenage years set in
Her hair changed color along with her innocence
She was growing faster than I could control
If for one moment could I keep
The girl with blue eyes and yellow hair

I still see that girl once in awhile
She kisses me when she leaves for work or school
and tells me
“i love you Daddy,” as she drives away
She is on her way
She is a women now
Soon to be gone and out of the house

I know this
It hurts
I still dream of
The girls with blue eyes and yellow hair

The hugs and kisses from her to me
The “everything was new” to her
I could teach her everything
Now she know a lot
More than I wish
Someday we will laugh at that
O how I miss
The girl with blue eyes and yellow hair

Time will go on
Hopefully she will hold someone
Someone tiny
With blue eyes and yellow hair
and she will teach her to
respect nature, animals, and people
One day, as sad as it will be
She will have to say goodbye to me
I hope she then realizes
I hope she understands
How much I loved
I love
The girls with blue eyes and yellow hair

Cheer up, Tankhead, girls NEVER stop needing their daddy no matter what their age. You get to be a hero to them until the day you die.

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2015/06/05/researchers -cracked-code-happiness/

"think of others before yourself"......

Weird. Isn't there some ancient wisdom to that effect?

Where have I heard that before?

Oh, well, anyway the mayo Clinic has "cracked the code"..... ( I swear, I have this on an old book here somewhere....)

That poem hits home. My niece committed suicide today. She was 14. Her mother found her hanging in the shed this morning. It has been a no good rotten very bad day.

I'm so sorry Jeff. I'll be praying for the family. I lost two close relatives to suicide. It is really hard on the family.

Thanks Bill, thanks Pat. We're struggling to understand, but we never will. I've lost two people to suicide now, one a relative, one a friend, and fellow badwebber. If only I had know their pain, I may have been able to dissuade them.

That's a natural reaction. "If Only I'd.... been in touch more, seen the problem, had ESP and a magic wand... " Nasty little circle in your head.

Nothing I say will make that doubt go away, either, sorry. I can only say it's the way everyone feels.

Very sorry to hear about this. We just had a suicide at our high school last week. Hanging also and then her dad shot himself the day after. Horrible.

My entire family will be praying for all of you.

Terrible to hear that Hootowl. I've seen suicide in my own family. I keep you in my prayers.

Thanks everyone. I can't even imagine what my Aunt is going through.

And...correction. This was my cousin. I tend to think of my aunt's children as my nieces and nephews because my aunt and I are about the same age.

Jeff- my deepest condolences for you and yours.

I second what Patrick said- it's a game you'll never win, don't play "woulda/coulda/shoulda..."
just keep your head up as best you can- except when you kneel to pray.
