I would suggest that most western democracies suffer from these problems not just the US. I have doubts about how public policy can address these issues directly and effectively.
On a radical note. How does a people create the perception that everyone pays their fair share towards the commonweal and that payment of taxes is a source of pride as a measure of one's success as a citizen? i.e. What if tax minimisation was seen as a source of shame and inability to pay tax was seen as a humiliating? That change in society would probably fairly quickly see a massive redistribution of wealth and a decline in the overall burden of tax paid by the middle class. Pumping up the middle class would see wide ranging increase in employment and a greater involvement by the disaffected in their local businesses and the commonwealth as a whole.

All total bullsh-t, like every liberal screed.

The reason that blacks are poor, is simply that they are the victims of liberal social, fiscal and monetary policies that are designed to keep them poor, and more importantly, totally dependent on government.

The great victory of the liberals is that by getting them to think of themselves as victims, and the Democrats as their allies, the liberals have been able to impoverish the blacks, while getting almost all of their votes.

Pretty slick, if you ask me.

Of course there is always the danger that the victims might catch on, and start a wave of civil unrest, rioting in the street, killing police, that kind of thing.

Isn't there?

I'm sure it started much earlier but I recall the first time I saw Pruitt-Igoe and go my first lesson in what happens when Democrats effectively enslave a minority population.

The things that have been done by Democrats, in the name of "equality" have effectively made realizing the American Dream the equivalent of climbing a greased mirror for some of the most talented and amazing citizens among our number.

To this day . . it is the Democrats who insist that the same folks who have to had a photo ID to get a discount at a grocery store or enter the Democratic National Convention, are "discriminated" against if it's even suggested one be required for voting.

We're told that blacks are unable to get to the state office building and incapable of understanding the process. The same folks who have perpetuated this total bullshit are invested in keeping minority populations as ill informed as possible while increasing their number by allowing criminals, motivated by the lure of nearly "free everything", to cross our borders.

Equal opportunity was envisioned as a means to allow those with occlude pathways to opportunity to access the ladders to ascend to the American Dream of prosperity. Instead, thanks to social engineering, the Democrats have effectively spread the message that if you can just appear "needy and oppressed" that we'' institute a program to set you atop the box . . why climb the ladder.

At the same time any minority, witness Condi Rice, Mia Love and thousands of other talented and gifted citizens are rebuked and ridiculed for their hard work and success.

What we get out of the donkey is largely dependent on which end we hang the carrot in front of.

There is no doubt that the well intended but seriously misguided social policies of the last 40 years are at the core of the problem. Proper social justice has to be built upon truth or charity, solidarity, and subsidiarity. Work is an integral part of human dignity, without work man looses hope, and self worth. So proper social justice must have as its goal the ability to teach people how to provide for themselves. Now after 4-5 generations of people becoming dependent upon the government because the policies have been designed to create an entitlement attitude, instead of building a desire in the individual to be self sufficient, to be able to provide for themselves. We as a community should have the same shared goals to help the poor to this result, this is what solidarity provides, and is to a certain extent an obligation of the human family. Right now their is a great imbalance in this understanding and just the opposite is happening because those who need think they deserve or are entitled to those same things others have worked hard to obtain. It is a mess and only going to get worse if the progressive socialist liberals stay in power. The poor are still enslaved and that is just how the democrats like it, it is truly disgusting how the liberals are playing the poor, problem is the poor believe them!

Hey GreatLaker,

How about showing a graph of earnings plotted against education level? Education works. This old conservative white man is living proof of that. As a kid I've stolen fruit off of the neighbors trees to have anything to eat and taken deer out of season when there was no food in the house. I've eaten out of a dumpster.

I also worked hard in school and worked full time while I was going to college. I'm not rich but made my way into the middle class.

When disadvantaged people take responsibility for themselves and make the effort to better their circumstances, their circumstances get better. I'm proof that education is the great equalizer.

You'd be surprised how much help us old conservative white guys are willing to give when we see some one trying hard making the effort. I quietly put my money where my mouth is. I've tutored the kids in my neighborhood and given them the encouragement they may not be getting at home.

The quickest way out of any ghetto is through education. All the good intentions in the world don't mean spit.
