This looks promising:

Lit Motors C-1 Electric Bike

100 MPH top speed
0-60 in < 6 seconds
200 mile range

Price is an estimated $24,000 before Federal, state and local electric vehicle incentives.

Could put it below $20,000.

I've been eyeballing this for a while now, I've been thinking it would make the perfect commuter vehicle. It has come a long way since I first saw postings about it a few years ago.

This is the first electric vehicle that I would really be interested in.

The 200 mile range, top speed and price all are appealing and doable.

I could commute all week on a single charge. I could go out for a day of riding/driving and have charge left.

Not enough shake for me, I need that visceral lumpy vibration of a twin or a big single.

You meant, "before Federal, state and local electric vehicle corporate welfare."

According to Abe Askenazi (former Buell Senior Director of Analysis, Test and Engineering Process), we're about to see some MAJOR leaps in battery technology:

This.

To everyone who buys one, take my hard earned dollars (that were forcibly taken from me to give to you in order to reward you for 'right thinking') and stick them someplace dark and smelly upon your person.

Now, having peed in the soup, I do like the idea of an EV, and I think it's great that battery development is progressing (they're doing really interesting things in the nano space). I just don't want to be forced to pay for yours.

I'd rather my hard earned dollars go into that kind of technology than paying for weapons systems the DOD doesn't even WANT.

Constitution requires congress to maintain an army and a navy. It says nothing about paying people tax dollars to buy things. And that means they can't. But they are. Hmmm.

I also have no problem with government funding of scientific research...that's allowed for in the constitution. Subsidies for individuals to buy products is not furthering research, it's creating an artificial market for a product.

I very much agree with Hoot on this.

Electric vehicles will make sense when they make sense. Don't MAKE them make sense.

I like hybrids too. I don't like that the government makes me help buy them for other people.

The aluminum battery is coming. Fast charge and supposed to not catch fire if you shoot it.

So buying electric today is for the rich and hobbyists.

Would you buy a NiCad powered bike? No. That would be stupid now that Li-ion batteries are common. Lead acid? Iron-air? Potato?

The tech will improve and the price will drop. I'm going to wait. You please yourself, it's the American way.

Hoot, I don't agree with it, but I'm tired of fighting it. No one wants to address the problem, so I guess I'll become part of the problem.

I also deduct my charitable gifts, mortgage insurance, receive a child tax credit, get a deduction for state sales tax, deduct home office expenses......

It is what it is. Until it changes, I'll work to elect those who would work to change it.

I'm waiting to see what Polaris/Brammo come up with; Polaris became a major EV player by buying Brammo.

It's always been the case that the govt taxes those activities it wishes to discourage (i.e. alcohol and tobacco) and offers incentives (tax credits or rebates) for those it encourages. They tend to look at the big picture while I focus more on the individual (ME). I confess that I rarely look further ahead than the end of my ..... Well, let's just say I'm a bit shortsighted.
