Dan, a lack of communication is a form of message in itself. Serve your own best interests right now and get rid of your depreciating assets as quickly as you can. I feel for you brother but as the referee says in boxing, "Protect yourself at all times." If EBR does come back, you'll have a decision to make whether to try again with them, but as I am fond of saying to others, "I have to save me before I can save you." You have to get to the shore before you can save someone else from drowning.
It may not be a popular opinion but get rid of that stuff while you can for as much as you can anyway you can!
\iI see the 1190SX selling for $11,495 with no dealer network or replacement parts available or you can purchase a new Triumph Bonnieville for around $9,000. Which one would you purchase?}
Bonneville. I had a 2011 and it's the only thing I regret selling in my life. Simple, reliable and fun for no reason other than it just is. I'll have another one to go with my Geezer Glide someday.
We will see what happens. He created a great american Sport bike, and did more than we can imagine. overall, it was a very high end bike, that not many people could afford. Even the newer models were a little high priced for the average motorcyclist out there. I was hoping that bringing over the HERO bikes, and Erik being the distributor would have added cash overall to EBR, and would have helped fund bikes and bring the price down. A lot of the manufacturers are now producing Machines that are smaller, more economical, and fun. Honda 500's , Yamaha twins and triples, suzuki gxxr 750, Ktm 390 dukes, etc. reliable, fast, inexpensive, and good looking bikes. I was looking forward to the HERO Twin ( looked like a ktm) It seemed like it would be a bike that I could afford. Triumph. I also have a Triumph bonneville in addition to my Buells. What a fantastic bike. Runs great, looks good, inexpensive, and tons of parts to make it look and run even better. Personally, I have been a Buell Motorcycle fan for a long time. I have been to home comings, races, get togethers, etc. A great bike, but even more important great people. I would love to have a new TUBE Frame buell, like Jon said.....with the latest air cooled motor, like Buell was producing at the end. This would be cool. I currently still have three buells, and parts to build another two. We will see......
I bought my first Buell after HD had shut them down. I was attracted to getting a lot of bike for the money, and really fell in love with the 1125R, enough to put up with quirks, fix issues, and buy a 2nd when I totaled my first.
Part of the equation for me was years worth of parts supply, and enough bikes produced to support some aftermarket, and enough bikes that end up parted out and supplying the used parts market.
I simply don't see this for the EBR bikes.
At this point, there is no indication if the parts in their warehouse would even make it onto the market, but we can assum they will. After that, I don't believe there is a seven year commitment, since a bankrupt company sheds obligations.
There aren't hardly any aftermarket parts, and few wrecked bikes to part out. That leaves the few that were produced. Project out 5 years and how many can be kept running? Factor in a high power engine that is likely eating parts faster (6.5k valve check) and an EBR seems pretty risky, regardless of the selling price.
Lastly, if a simple tip over totals a bike due to lack of parts, who will want to write an insurance policy for it?
Dear Erik Time to go back to the Barn start again and build a couple dozen bikes a year with great feel and know powerplants. Hand formed Tubes with hand laid welds putting the great human feel into the ride of the bike. Look around here all the tube lovers support you. I would be more then willing to invest my savings up route my home and come build bikes in a barn with you!!
I love tube frame Buells.. they are true art. how cool would it be to have a steel framed, long legged, tin panniered, rugged overland adventure version with all modern styling and a mildly tuned 1190. or an affordable, sleek super enduro, and hey while I'm dreaming, a modern tube rendition of the S3T.. and of course bring back all the old colors
(Then pump out a few RX & SX's on the side for the racer guys)
Just how does that phrase coined in "Field of Dreams" go exactly? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wake up Thump.. wake up. Go get your coffee and shake it off.. it's been a rather traumatic week
I think EBR is dead. Erik is 65. As some point he will want to stop beating his head against the wall and enjoy his golden years. It's just time. The vast majority of us would have tossed in the towel LONG ago in Erik's circumstances.
>>>The vast majority of us would have tossed in the towel LONG ago in Erik's circumstances.
I absolutely agree . . . the vast majority, a year younger than Colonel Harlan Sanders was when he started KFC, would have thrown in the towel.
Good for me that Erik Buell . . . with those hundreds of patent, the heart of gold and the amazing mind is light years separated from the vast majority.
Erik's health is good, he's got more ideas than he can write down and one time and he's got a proven ability to attract talent and make things happen.
While EBR may be dead . . . . Erik Buell hasn't even slowed down and I'd sure not describe what he's doing as beating his head against the wall.
I'm as sorry as anyone about the recent turn of events. It's a shame to see the investment of talent, money and time unravel but that's the reason that Morningstar has "risk profiles" on all my investments. I'm damn aware that everything I am doing in my life has risk . . . .from my portfolio to sitting on the side of a helicopter reaching out to a 345,000 volt power line. I'm also painfully aware, as my Grandfather and Father found out on those powerless, of what the risks are.
While the "vast majority" may indeed opt to take their social security and go off fishing . . . my full in life are those who, in their 60's are just now gaining momentum. One of my closet friends in one of the top partners in one of the larger international law firms . . . She was telling a story last night and, while she's won most the cases in her career (the reason we were out last night is that she got a huge decision., prevailing against the two largest banks in Bahrain, yesterday on a big case that's based in Sharia law . . .where charging interest is illegal) she's also taken some huge set backs.
She is a perfect example . . .with houses in Denmark, Vail and NYC of someone who could walk away and, in stead, is looking to set up a new small business working out of her home
Years ago . . I listened to the Carly Simon song "Touched by the Sun" . . . .
quote:
If you want to be brave And reach for the top of the sky And the farthest point on the horizon Do you know who you'll meet there Great soldiers and seafarers, Artists and dreamers Who need to be close, close to the light They need to be in danger of burning by fire And I, I want to get there I, I want to be one One who is touched by the sun, One who is touched by the sun
Often I want to walk The safe side of the street And lull myself to sleep And dull my pain But deep down inside I know I've got to learn from the greats, Earn my right to be living, Let my wings of desire Soar over the night I need to let them say "She must have been mad" And I, I want to get there I, I want to be one One who is touched by the sun, One who is touched by the sun
- Carly Simon - Touched By The Sun
I'm glad that vast majority is out there . . . but I am not going to let them slow me down and I doubt Erik will either.
I don't think Erik knows how to retire, it's not in his DNA, along with all the "normal" career moves. If Erik ahd been a "normal" career guy, he'd have stayed at Harley and be on the board now, with millions in stock options, and living the "good life" with estates in rural Wisconsin and the south for the winter... I can't picture Erik doing anything like that!
I had a tour of the EBR truck 2 weekends ago in Dahlonega, GA at the demo ride event. They had a bunch of spare body plastics stored inside ... Guess I should have asked for a spare set.
