Several years ago EBR sent out a survey asking what you were looking for in a motorcycle. Does everybody remember that? I started filling out that survey and every question was focused on a sportbike. About half way through that survey I stopped and canceled out my survey because there was nothing in it that interested me in a motorcycle that they were wanting to build! I kept following the company because of the rumor of an upcoming AX model which never came about! Before I would purchase a 1190RX or a 1190SX, I would buy a motor scooter! Less expensive and more comfortable to ride! I see a lot more motor scooters around than I see Buells or EBR's. In fact I've never seen a EBR except at the factory! Buell had something going back in 2006 when they introduced the Ulysses, I think they should have ran with that platform because I've never seen another motorcycle that I feel competes with my Uly for handling, comfort, and price! Now I'm just glad I bought my Uly when I did! I continue to wear my Black Buell folding brim cap with all of my Buell riding gear still putting miles and miles with smiles on my face and will continue to do so until I die!
Best motorcycle ever made, I just wish they were still making Uly's! |

Yeah I remember that survey. I also remember having the same thoughts. 'Shame really. I was really hoping for a 1190 AX. Then when I began hearing that it would not be an 1190 well that is when my interest faded. I did buy an ECM from the company and it was a seamless transaction. |

Buell lost me on the demise of the tubers.
My next biggest interest was dual sport/supermoto bikes.
Like many others, I sure wished them the best, but as a used tuber owner of thirteen years I was honestly never even a customer.

I remember the survey too, and I took it as well. It was very targeted and appeared to justify the course that they were already taking. It was, as well, the last time that I know of of a formal attempt to reach out to potential customers. Could have refined their thinking, driven marketing, and future models. |

I remember when Erik left Harley years ago someone here said that finally, Erik can build the bike he wants. Maybe he should have built the bike customers wanted.
I too wished him well in his endeavors, knowing that I wasn't the guy he was marketing to but always hoping that he would survive long enough to come up with something I wanted. |

It's just those same customers didn't realize just how good the bike is that he was building... |

One of my all time favorite Buell motorcycles was the ST3 which I never owned one. But the Ulysses was a close second! If only EBR could have made a replacement for one of those great motorcycles. |

I tend to agree with this.
However, I don't see evidence that a fully vetted market analysis was completed pre-production.
Dreams and vision are great things, but they don't pay the bills.

EBR was established as a company building race bikes (its in the name) and that was their goal. Things didn't change until HERO came around.
It doesn't matter was the results were from the survey if you don't have the capital to produce the product the result uncover.
They wanted to build best-in-class sportbikes first, which they did, and then produce the product from the survey; probably the AX. However, EBR wasn't open long enough to make it come to fruition.
I'm sure one success of that survey was that it helped bring attention to EBR that they may not have had if they had not produced the survey.
EBR's goal was to attract non buell folks. Why you ask, because they knew we would support them with purchasing an EBR or by positive word-of-mouth, or both. Get the rider off the ducati and get them on an EBR; that is a great goal and very achievable as long as you have the capital to keep things going and a marketing strategy; they had neither one of these components to achieving their goals. But then again, do any of us really know what EBR's goals were? I know I don't, all I know are my goals for them. |
