..we can all thank those"turds in suits" in Washington,D.C. for that.....and all the rest of the screw ups they continue to do to ruin this country....still say we need to give 'em a supersized enema to Washington,D.C. ,and start all over...bunch of a**hats and douche canoes.....  | ||

I heard a story on something similar on NPR last year. The story was about how the number of people qualified for disability had skyrocketed over the past few years, and they interviewed a doctor in rural Alabama who had approved a disproportionate number of his patients for disability. One example given was a ~55 year old black lady who had worked in health care for most of her life. She had developed hip problems and could no longer stand for long periods. As a result, she had to quit her health care job which required her to stand and walk for long periods. She is clearly physically capable of doing some jobs (working at a desk for instance), but she doesn't have the experience or education to qualify. The area is very depressed and there was little opportunity for the lady to be re-trained for a new job. The doctor said he considered that she is "disabled" as she is no longer able to do the jobs she is qualified to perform. Apparently this logic has been applied by MANY doctors in recent years during the economic downturn. I can understand his viewpoint, and I feel sorry for the lady, but this sure doesn't seem like the way to deal with this issue. | ||

I have worked at Taco Bell. Took me 5 days to find a better job, WHILE I was working there. I'd work there again if I had to. Opportunities present themselves to those who aspire to something. | ||

I've got a friend who seriously screwed up his leg and could no longer drive a truck. After several operations he qualified for disability. I found an opportunity for him to make good money without over stressing his leg. His reply was "It sounds good but let me check it out. I don't want to mess up my disability." So here's a guy in his late 30's who plans on living off the work of others for the rest of his life. Him and millions more. | ||

I know a guy that gets full disability from the railroad. He was a welder and machine operator. Granted he is kinda screwed up with two new knees and a few new knuckles....but now he is moonlight welding for a railroad subcontractor and driving a semi,hauling corn to an ethanol plant. | ||

It's an odd mentality. Taking from the State/Feds when you can clearly contribute in some way despite being unable to follow your current line of work. It appears to be universal too. I know first-hand several UK residents who receive disability there even though they are as able-bodied as I am. I don't know what the answer is but it is an endemic problem that needs to be addressed. It sure does make the unemployment figures look good though..... I've been in the U.S. for 25+ years. I have always worked and would never consider claiming anything if, like Pwnzor, I can do any kind of work. It just doesn't set well with my personal responsibility ethos. No one owes me a living.
