After 6 years or faithful service, my PS3 has died.

I am not hardcore gamer. I play games to relax, but probably only a few days a week, for around an hour at a time. I mostly used it for all around entertainment, like Netflix, DVD/Bluray, etc.

From what I'm seeing, it seems like the better user interface, more powerful unit is the PS4.

What are you using? Would you do it again? What would you recommend?

I have both, in addition to Wii U, high end PC, and virtually every console ever made.

For what you are going to be using it for, you will find the media center functions of the Xbox One to be superior. Also, make sure you get the Kinect for it, it is one of those things that seems gimmicky until you use it. My favorite feature of Kinect is voice commands, I can say "xbox on" and it will turn on the console, my TV, and surround sound system. Also if my phone rings in the middle of a movie, a quick "xbox pause" is all it takes rather than fumbling around for a remote or a controller that has powered off automatically.

For games, look into the exclusives for both platforms, see if anything jumps out at you, personally I find the Xbone exclusives like Forza and Halo to be better than what we have seen thus far on the PS4.

I do like my PS4, I just don't use it as much, and it doesn't really have any killer titles yet.

Do you still need to buy a yearly subscription in order to have the honor of being allowed to use the features of the XBox you also bought with the game you also bought?

That's what soured me on the XBox for my kids. The cost wasn't terrible, but the principal was offensive.

Reepi, the list of features you can and can't do with a free vs paid account does vary between the 360 and One, there is a good list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Live#Xbox_Live_c hart

That said, Sony does the same thing on their consoles.

Average prices-
X1- $350 no Kinect
PS4- $400

X1- $60 per year
PS4- $50 per year
But that is only for the free games and online play.

Both will now do netflix and such without the online fee

The PS4 has the better hardware and cleaner build. (ie no power brick better GPU and such) but game performance should be similar.

XB1- controllers use replaceable batteries
PS4- they have built in rechargeables and a cord(short) to connect to the PS for recharging.

Most games will come out for both platforms but like froggy said there are exclusives that don't(ie HALO)

Halo makes my physically nauseous. No idea why. The BIG exclusives that have been on my list since PS1, is the Metal Gear series. I didn't buy the PS2 until that one came out...

I mostly play shooters. Games that I can play for an hour, put the controller down and not have any issues with.

Simple; you're getting old.
I started experiencing game play related nausea in my 40s, when playing Doom 1.0.
It doesn't get better, only worse.

I'd rather drop the $300 into a kick-ass video card for my PC, and not have to pay a monthly fee to do whatever I want to do with it.

But if you do a lot of gaming, the monthly fee is probably not enough to be an issue to you, and the console experience is nice and fuss free. PC games can turn into debugging nightmares sometimes.

Online gaming doesn't appeal to me. I go to school full, work lots of over time, and trying to open a shop, so I can't play enough to be competitive. I tried to play with FT once and lost interest in a hurry.

I ended up with PS4 Last of Us and GTA5. GTA5 is just too large a world to be in a video game...
