What they mean is the collectivist/socialist/communist/fascist flavors of totalitarian regimes vs. Freedom. The war that keeps on giving. (Death)

Back in the earlier centuries it was pretty much one King stealing from another.

You are correct in that peace is the short times between War while folk recover and rearm. Pretty much since Ur.

Waiting to hear if the scramble to take territory before the "cease fire" actually stops. The agreement calls for "heavy weapons" ( artillery ) to be pulled back, and that's just not going to happen, Putin has territory and he's keeping it.

Idiot newspapers report "Putin seems skeptical about the cease fire", which is silly since he has no intent to keep any promises at all.

Leaving NATO

Jerry,
You wrote yesterday, and have done so in days past, that the US should leave NATO. You state that NATO has done its job, shutdown the Soviets, so now we are free to leave. However, NATO has another job just as important as shutting down the Soviets was: keeping Europe disarmed and occupied by a friendly force.
Prior to the US occupation of Europe, there had seldom been peace in Europe. This was fine for the young United States as it kept European powers busy with each other, wasting lives and treasure 3,000 miles from our shores. A peaceful Europe would have left the European Powers able to conquer the US. This state of affairs suited the US just fine until industrialization gave the European Powers the ability to fight global wars.
The United States was no longer safe from a warring Europe. Their wars spilled out all over the globe. The incessant warring in Europe had to stop. The European Powers had never been able to stop on their own, so after World War II, the United States occupied Europe. We established huge military bases throughout and around the region. We convinced the European Powers that we could act as their military, defending them against the “external” threats of the time (the Soviets were sure convenient), so we got them to largely disarm. The European Powers were happy with this — they could spend their treasure on rebuilding after WWII and then on social programs that make politicians happy and bribe the people into quiescence.
The United States realized after the two world wars that it was much cheaper in lives and treasure to occupy a disarmed Europe than it was to arm itself for another European invasion. If we leave NATO and let Europe rearm for serious warfare, we will have to rearm for serious European invasion. We will have to have the capacity to meet and defeat major industrial powers in global warfare again. And this time, we cannot count on the oceans to keep the bombs and missiles, or even the armies, off of our land. We will have to prepare to be invaded as well. This gets ugly.
I say it is cheaper in lives and treasure to stay in NATO, keep justifying it, and keep Europe occupied and disarmed.

Kevin L Keegan

NATO primarily threatens Russia and makes it difficult to exploit our common interests with Russia in dealing with China. It embroiled us in the Balkan mess where we had no interests at all other than sentimental – the participants there were no more vicious than many African conflicts produce.

The French want us to sit on Fritz. Europe need not spend so much on defense. The US subsidizes Europe that way. While I have considerable sentimental regard for the Balkan republics, they are hardly vital allies against – anyone. It is time for Europe to grow up.

......Overlaying all of this, however, is the Leninist add-on to Putin’s Mafia-like operation. Communism as an economic theory and a worldview died in Russia a long time ago. But Leninism is still very much alive there. And its most sophisticated and ruthless practitioner is Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.

A lot of what is wrong in Russian public life today can be traced to a chapel on London’s Tottenham Court Road. There, in 1903, the Second Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Party, having scuttled out of an unwelcoming Brussels with the Belgian authorities on its heels, split into two factions, with the minority, led by Lenin, styling themselves the Bolshintsvo (majority) — a nice signal of prevarications to come. The split came over the program laid out in Lenin’s 1902 tract What Is to Be Done?, which prescribed a revolutionary Marxist party that would function as the “vanguard of the proletariat.” That much of the program is well enough known. What is perhaps less known is that Lenin’s political program, which finds its incarnation in Putin today, was characterized by three other distinctive elements.

The first element was violence, including murder, which was to be strategically deployed both against class enemies and against insufficiently revolutionary comrades. The second element was the strategy of the lie. Revolutionary morality and the imperatives of conspiracy superseded the bourgeois morality of truth-telling taught by both biblical religion and classical antiquity — the “truth” was whatever served the aims of the vanguard party, irrespective of whether that “truth” had any tether to objective reality. And the third element of the Leninist method was a strict hierarchy: a “power-vertical” on steroids, in which everything flowed down and virtually nothing flowed up.

Each of these three Leninist elements has been on vivid display in Putin’s Russia. Boris Nemtsov, the political intellectual and reformer gunned down within sight of the Kremlin walls on February 27, was the latest victim in a line that also includes investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya (shot in 2006); former FSB officer and Putin critic Aleksandr Litvinenko (poisoned by radioactive polonium-210 in London that same year); and investigative auditor Sergei Magnitsky (beaten to death while in custody in 2009). The same commitment to violence as a method of advancing political aims has been evident in both Russian-occupied Crimea and Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine; there, it led to the deaths of several hundred Malaysian Airlines passengers in 2014, as it has to the torture of Ukrainian prisoners and the kidnappings that have characterized the struggle for Ukraine these past 16 months.

As for the lies, Putin’s regime has now reached such a level of automatic and refined mendacity that the immediate response to the Nemtsov murder in the Russian mass media, and from Putin’s epigones in the Russian government, was to suggest that this was a “provocation” staged by NATO, or Ukraine, or NATO-and-Ukraine, in order to destabilize the Russian regime. That Russian agitprop merchants still feel compelled to try such a rhetorical stunt, at a moment when NATO is virtually supine in the face of Russian aggression, suggests just how deeply the culture and (if you will pardon the term) the ethic of mendacity has sunk in, in Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

Seems like a bad idea to me. Europeans have mostly been at war with each other since they walked there from Africa. Having a single Army to defend it from Vladimir isn't going to work.

I scored a Nikon D-70 with Nikon 70-200mm lens for $150 on craigslist. The professionals are *finally* letting them slip out of their cold, dead, hands.

Still a killer camera.

For more discretion and lower light, the Panasonic Lumix LX series cameras are getting *stupid* cheap. Even the LX-3 is still a great little camera, and they are showing up under $100. Everyone should have one in their pocket for that price.

That's a steal for a $2,500 lens ! ! . . . I just paid $472 for my annual rebuild on the 70-200mm

See if you can find a similar deal on a 14-24. :-)

My bad, it was the 55-200 F4-5.6, which go for $100 to $150 refurb'd. Consumer level Nikon, and not a very wide aperture, but that is still great glass, and it has vibration reduction and auto focus. Killer shots in good light, not so much when it is dark. So just keep it outside on a sunny day.

Then I got a Nikon 18-55 AF/VR for $30 with a broken (plastic) bayonet, which I repaired for $5 in ebay parts. Again, crappy low light performance.

So I have a Lumix LX-3 for knife fights in a dark phone booth. You can buy an LX-3 for under $100, and you get a Leica 24mm (35mm film equiv) F2.0 lens for that. Which on a DSLR would be a stupid expensive lens. No telephoto at all (it barely reaches portrait focal length), but boy does it jam for wide angle natural light in the dark.

Here is Court's electronics tech shutting down an opposing player *cold*... Taken with the D70.

It has been pointed out to me that I was wrong in a comment... And I was wrong.

I said Rocket got banned when he started calling us all Jews, somehow thinking it was an insult.

Go back a bit and read his posts yourself. He asked me not to interpret his comments.

And that is not true. Rocket & I were having a heated discussion, and he called ME a Jew Bigot. I didn't take that very well, and it got heated. He did NOT call us all jews.

If I'm going to insist on Truth, I have to correct myself when I stretch it or lie myself. For not sticking to truth I apologize. For the insult of speaking less than factually about another, I also apologize.

It's not right for me to comment on banned members or why they got banned.

Rocket & I have had heated discussions before, and some of that has been bad communication, and some cultural... and some bloody minded stubborness.

You want to read the whole sordid mess and make up your own mind, perhaps start at the end of Sept. 2014. You will miss a lot of back story, however, and to this day I can't tell if Obama is Putin's servant, rival, or just a fellow traveler.

I'm still trying to figure out where we disagree on counter steering, a topic that promises to start another flame war. He was trying to explain how the big toe was important... ( I KNOW I got that all wrong ) when the discussion was cut off quite some time ago. I'm pretty sure Rocket knows more about hanging off a bike and getting ten tenths out of it than I do, and I was missing some subtle point that might improve me as a rider.

Thus we ruin our chances at learning.

End rant.

Thank you for your patience.

When in fact what you meant to say was, "Greatlaker sees Kenyan's as black."

You made an incorrect grammatical sentence. It's not even worth commenting on. Why bother bringing that up again Aesquire? I would imagine it's not even worth your time to care.
