If nothing else, it's full of irony.

My house has a double front door. Nice steel doors, covered front porch so no weather hits them...but it's on the windward side. Full-bore wind, all the time. Right now, my front hall (which has no heat duct) is frigid.

So...I ordered a set of Larson low-E full-view storm doors with interchangeable glass / screen panels. I also got their "french door kit", so I can do the double-door setup. Should make a nice change in the hallway warmth, as well as giving me the option of screen for fresh air in the spring. And I'm certain that front doors that let cold into the hall...are also letting my heat out onto the porch. Sealing that up should do wonders for my HVAC costs, too - both now, and in a/c season.

The irony part? Today is install day. On the LEEward side of the house, the thermometer sensor (which is on a windowsill that radiates some house warmth) is showing 12 degrees with no wind. Out front, there's no sun (covered porch) and PLENTY of wind. So I'm going to install my "make it warmer" doors...on a freezing, nearly-dangerously-cold day with plenty of wind.

Yippee.

I'd postpone...but this is when I need them the most! (sigh...) At least the DeWalt cordless stuff is plastic - I can't stick to it in the cold!

"When it's raining, I can't fix the leaky roof; an' when it's dry, it don't leak."

Good luck. I'd make a temporary "wall" out of Poly sheet in the hall way to try and keep some heat in the house while you work.

Nah, survived OK. Doors fought back...drill bits snapped from being brittle in the cold, measurements didn't compute in my cold (and already challenged) brain...but the doors are 95% installed. Still gotta do some weatherstripping once it's daylight again, but in the last hour the front hall has already gone from 10 degrees cooler than the living room, to 5.

Gotta adjust one shim, and finish weatherstripping...but I'm already pretty damn pleased : )

Well, they're in...and they work! My front hall was 10 degrees colder than the living room. Now, with the new doors? 1.3 degrees cooler.

THAT'S gonna help the heat pump bill!!

They're already Andersen thermopane with storms. Seems the only thing he didn't do when he built was the front doors. They definitely changed the face of the house - very traditional stone home, now with modern looking storm doors. I'll (once I can use liquids outside again) play with colors to try and blend them some more...but they're still two big panes of glass.

But its warm inside the hall now. That's a victory. : )

Just pick your favorite color and paint the door that.
