By all means then, Tank, jump on Amazon and pick up a copy. There's one in there titled "My Three Friends"- if I ever join a poetry slam, THIS one would be great for recital!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have three friends, three faithful friends,
more faithful could not be-
and every night, by the dim firelight,
they come to sit with me.
the first of these is tall and thin
with hollow cheeks, and a toothless grin,
a ghastly stare, and scraggly hair,
and an ugly lump for a chin.
the second of these is short and fat
with beady eyes, like a starving rat-
he was soaked in sin to his oily skin,
and verminous, at that.
the crouching one is of ape-like plan,
formed like a beast that resembled man:
a freakish thing, with arms a-swing,
and he was the third of that gruesome clan.
the first I stabbed with a Chinese knife,
and left on the white beach sand,
with his ghastly stare, and blood-soaked hair,
and an out-flung, claw-like hand;
the fat one stole a crumbling crust,
that he wolfed in his swinish way-
so i left him there, with eyes a-glare,
and his head cut of half-way.
we fought to kill, the brute and i,
that the one that lived might eat,
so i killed him too, and made a stew,
and dined on human meat.
and so these three come to visit me
when without the night winds howl-
the one with the leer, the one with a sneer,
and and one with a brutish scowl;
their lips are dumb, but the three dead come
and crouch by the hollow grate-
the man that i stabbed, the man that i cut,
and the gruesome thing that i ate.
their lips are sealed, with blood congealed,
but they will not let me be,
and so they haunt, grim, ghastly, and gaunt,
till death shall set me free.
i have three friends, three faithful friends,
more faithful could not be-
and every night, by the dim firelight,
they come to sit with me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

OK, sorry bout the highjack!

SQUIDS: I am talking about my trip (this was a thread about a journey inspired by my pending divorce when I started it...now it's a poetry festival.) So for those still interested in the journey, I have at least a couch at an old friend's house awaiting in Phoenix for night three, so if all goes as planned, all of my nightly lodging is accounted for and the saddle bags are mounted. T-minus 3 weeks and counting. Oil change and [unplanned] fork rebuild left to do.

Only if that helps/entertains ya, of course! ; )

I dont know what route you are planning across New Mexico, but if you are headed through Phoenix in Az, I would suggest taking hwy 70 through Globe then 60 into Phoenix. This is a much nicer ride than I-10. The more northerly route of 60 through Showlow is a great ride in the summer, but right now it is snowy and cold.

Hi guys. I got back to TX two weeks ago. I have been busy with work and spending time with my girls while my soon-to-be-ex-wife moved out. This Saturday I fly to LA to ride home. The ride out was everything that you guys said...windy, but very little rain, and all the BAD weather was back home in DFW. I had great riding weather and saw exactly one Buell besides mine (Ulysses on the Phoenix bypass...anyone here?) I had a great trip and had lots of tim to think. Worst thing that happened was my ipod died five miles into the journey. I bought a new one when I got home. Thanks for all your support and now for part II!

What route did you take, And do you have a different route planned for the trip back?

OK finally an update. I thought of updating along the way a few times, but typing all this on my phone was not appealing after 350 miles. I made it back to DFW yesterday. The route OUT to LA was rt20-> rt10-> rt 8 into San Diego. Route home was rt 10 east to rt 20. I used to wonder if all the talk of ARCO gas being junk was just talk, but with two XBs and more than 30k miles in all conditions, the only time I have ever had the ECM go into skip-spark was after buying ARCO gas on this trip.
So make what you will of that.
Coming out of a different gas stop, I got the check engine light. Shorting diagnostic connector pins 1 and 2 got me code 21: exhaust valve servo failure. Big Surprise, huh. the only serious rain I ran into was heading into Las Cruces on Tuesday. Rain that felt like rocks. It was a great trip. I had most all clothing contingencies covered, but I did sweat a lot in the Phoenix evening traffic. I will do it again someday, with more time to stop and look around.

Perhaps...but on this trip, whatever road I was on was the good one. I found some clarity, and met a lot of people, and saw a lot of this great land. I'll be back.

I know the feeling. Went to Daytona Beach for the first time in ten years earlier this month. Despite the fact I superslabbed it the whole way, I had a great time just being alone with my thoughts and enjoying the wind on my body. Traffic jams around accidents and construction were no fun, but once clear of that it was just fine.

That's one of the reasons I go to work, me, my head, the road, & 18 wheels.
