Tonight, I plan to watch the movie, Tora! Tora! Tora!
If you haven't seen the movie, I strongly recommend it.
I knew someone who had been a rear gunner on a Dauntless dive bomber in World War 2. It was his favorite movie, since he was directly involved in the war. The film is as historically accurate as the producers could make it and it covers both sides honestly and accurately.

And let us not forget that this led us to Pres Proclamation 2525 (on the 8th), then to EO9066, both interning American citizens for nothing more than their race/ancestry.

It was a sad day for America, for all of the lives lost at Pearl Harbor to the poor decisions it led to

Tora Tora Tora is a good idea. Just recorded it the other day. Will have to watch it tonight. Been a long time.

It's also my 33rd anniversary date at work. Only 1.5 to go!!

I have an 86 year old friend that was on Pearl. Love talking to him.

Sifo,
That is an interesting picture of the Arizona. I didn't remember there being "green space" on top of the mooring piers when we were there back when my son was in the Navy.
My wife and I stayed on Ford Island, we had base passes, we got to walk anywhere we wanted. We walked past the hangers that are still there, filled with cars of sailors on deployment. There are still bullet holes in the hangers from Dec. 7th 1941.
We visited the original officers housing area. BTW, just checked the Goggle sat map, looks like they are gone now. Wish I'd taken more pictures.. My wife was walking around looking at the old quarters building (small single family type houses), I went exploring. I headed down the narrow street that used to go in front of the houses, it ended in a 2 rut path. I followed it and very shortly would up by a very large bush, as I walked around the "bush" I found myself on the beach (if you can call it that) right next the Arizona. I was very quiet as it was about 5:00AM and calm. I could smell the bunker fuel and see the rainbows on the water. Is I stood there I realized I was standing on very hallowed ground, sailors had crawled up on the very spot I was standing, breathed their last and died. I literally had to take a knee as the energy of the place was overwhelming. Yeah I cried. As I let the emotions take their course, I noticed a motor launch approaching the Arizona Memorial. I continued to sit on the ground with my feet inches from the oily water as I watched the honor guard sailors disembark and begin the daily flag raising ceremony. I don't recall if the boson did the whistle thing or not but the entire thing was quite surreal. They raised the flag, saluted and brought the flag back down. They did this at least a half dozen times. A bit confusing but I later found out a different flag was used each time. The flags were available in the gift shop. Anyone can request a flag be flown on a specific day, you just need to give them a few months notice. The gift shop has flags that were raised on special days like the 4th of July or on Dec 7th. I have one of those in a flag case in my office.
The entire island has that feel of a place of reverence. Hard to explain but it was an amazing experience I'll remember for life. We walked the length of the old runways, stood next to the old control tower and counted bullet marks acquired during the attach.. An amazing place of history.
