Seeking opinions/recommendations for a new garage door opener. I like the first link you posted I have been looking at them and think once my openers take a dump I will switch to that style. They make the most sense to me and wondered why they aren't more prevalent. the big plus is it frees the ceiling up in the middle of the garage for a Lift. | ||

FWIW~I just installed a belt drive Genie and it is silent! I replaced a screw drive Genie that had a bad motor and I just love the new one. I like the little key fob openers that are used to control the door. | ||

The belt drives tend to have short life spans on the belt in my experience. Not difficult or real expensive to fix, but I've got a chain drive lift on my door that predates the photo sensor safety at the bottom of the door, and it has run flawlessly for the last 10 years I've been in this home. I think I had to replace the belt drive twice in about 15 years at my last place. | ||

Thanks for the reply Swampy. Interestingly, I to had a tired Genie screw drive opener. It came with the house, I'm guessing it was between 30 and 40 years old!. It ate 3 start capacitors in 9 months this year. I figured it was time... Replaced it with Lift Master 8587 chain drive, it has a single piece "I" beam guide rail, no flexing, and is whisper quiet. | ||

I have the liftmaster and it's awesome. It's so quiet but you will need a little shaft sticking out from your torque springs. It's a direct drive solid coupling that clamps onto roughly 3/4" of the shaft. It took a while to put all the safety stuff on and it won't work unless you do. It was well worth it in the end though! |
