Dinosaur BBQ? Did somebody say BBQ? Since leaving Kansas City I am always lusting for good BBQ and in Western NY it is hard to find. So I finally get to the Dinosaur in Rochester. It's OK but not up to Midwest standards. Now they have a Dinosaur in Buffalo, so we eagerly arrive and order Brisket. My brisket plate was great, but my wife is wiping something off her brisket sandwich. Horseradish sauce. WTF. Horseradish is for Beef on Weck. Oh I get it, the "chef" is adding his special Buffalo touch to BBQ. Don't with BBQ. A BBQ joint don't have no chef, he's a PIT BOSS. I want to go home.

I return you to your scheduled thread. Sorry

Crusty . . . even through the Dinosaur is in Morningside Heights . . . . I bravely ventured into Harlem last night to get these for you.

:-)

I'll be back there tonight for another 11:00pm show . . . if I survive I'll post some more pics.

Court,

Have you ever been to Katz's? I presume you must have, being the "foodie" I think you are. Opinion?

I've had Carnegie's overstuffed pastrami and it was wonderful (and I didn't have to eat for the rest of the day, either).

I haven't been to Katz' since 2001 . . .when I was working on Times Square Tower. But, it was great then and it's an institution in perpetuity . . there is no way you're going to go wrong.

Think of it this way . . . . if you get there and the lines are long or you have 2nd thoughts . . . you are a stones throw from Russ & Daughters . . you are in the ultimate "no loose" situation.

And . . if you loose your "Deli Jones" (by the way . . . . you'll be within 4 blocks of Jones Alley where that famous term came from) . . . .you can slip over to a place near and dear to me Benny's Burritos . . . . . wait . . wait . . what's this . . OH CRAP.

http://www.grubstreet.com/2014/11/bennys-burritos- east-village-closed.html

Face it Jaime . . you're eating deli food . . . and it'll be GREAT!

Leave the burritos to us out here in California as we are the true experts on the subject. We wash them down with Stone Double Arrogant Bastard IPA.

Youse guys are great at Deli while sipping Cosmopolitans with the other girls.

One NEVER drinks cosmos with a pastrami sandwich. What are you, some kind of ANIMAL??

Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray or Cream soda is the beverage of choice.

I (and my friends) will be at the IMS at 9:00 AM when it opens. Then, we'll be at the Dinosaur @ 2:00 PM or so on Saturday. Other than that, it's up to you and anyone else who wants to join us.

It was also just announced that MOTUS will be there . . . as the world's largest owner of Motus stickers, hats and owner's club paraphernalia . . that thrills me.

But . . . . after listening to all the bitching and whining about EBR price and number of dealers . . . I'm eager to see how Motus fares.

For the price of ONE Motus . . . I can buy one of each EBR modal made. . . yeah, an RX AND an SX and . .have enough left over to insure them for 3 years and have 4 times as many dealers.

Hmmmmmm . . . .

Yeah, I'm going to try to make it for opening time of 9:00. May break off earlier for lunch though, still have to drive home and have room for supper. Probably still be inside the Dino at 2 though.

On Saturday I heard Josh Hayes will be at the Yamaha booth, probably to talk about that awesome new R1 for 2015.

Sure wish EBR would be there. I've already seen the Motus bikes and Court is right. For the price of one Motus, I can get a K1600GTL Exclusive with ALL the bells and whistles, a far more extensive dealer network and a better factory warranty.

I'd also have a far more comfortable bike to log hundreds of thousands of miles on as well.

I have two (2) extra tickets to the show. They're *FREE* to the first two people who come up to me when I'm waiting in line to get into the show on Saturday morning.

So, I DID get down to Katz's after the show. Definitely worth the hype! Best damned pastrami I can ever remember. Spotted over a "certain table" inside:

It's good to know they occasionally update the street views.
Glad we had a good weekend, the bike ran fantastic on the way down and back. I guess whatever problem it has doesn't bother it in this weather. Got to try on a couple of bikes for size and even sat in the Slingshot. I still don't know how they got away with calling that a bike?
The Dino was tasty as usual. Almost gave up on Crusty, got ready to leave and he shows up with a friend followed right after by Froggy and Baf. Glad they made it, guess there was a traffic issue south on 9. Well it is NY after all. Hope to see everyone in the spring.

Thoughts After The Show

This past weekend, I went to the International Motorcycle Show in New York with my friend Kathryn. Dondi and Ernie were supposed to come with us, but they had to back out. Dondi had to attend a funeral for an old friend, and Ernie had a physical condition that kept him from going.
Since I knew the cheap way into the City, Kathryn had me drive. Neither of us is exactly swimming in cash, so we cut expenses as much as possible. We bought our show tickets in advance so we got a healthy discount, and I also found a parking lot that was heavily discounted if we purchased parking in advance, as well.
We had a lot of fun at the show. Kathryn was fitted by the Arai Rep for a helmet, and found the one that fit her perfectly. (I hope she doesn’t go looking online for one; when she sees the price, she’ll get sick. All I’ll say is her bike cost less that her dream helmet)
We checked out all the various aftermarket displays and watched the Stunt Show (Those guys are really skilled); and we looked at motorcycles.
We not only looked at motorcycles, we discussed them at length, we sat on them, we talked with Manufacturer Reps, and we got literature. We each had our priorities in what bike would meet our needs, and what bike impressed us the most. We kicked around the question, “If you could have any one bike here for free, which one would you choose, and why?” Actually, we kicked that around on the ride home.
One interesting fact emerged; Kathryn had no interest in a lot of the “Modern” designs. She preferred the look of more classically styled bikes. The bikes that caught her eye were bikes that appeared more like the old “Standard” styled machines of the ‘70s and ‘80s. She loved the look of the Yamaha SR 400. She liked the Yamaha Bolt both the H-D Sportster and the Street 750 and the Triumph 800s. Kawasaki had a display with a twin that had adjustable ergonomics, and although the control placement was very comfortable for her on one of them, she didn’t like them just because they looked so angular. She definitely is not a fan of motorcycles that were inspired by the movie Transformers. While I’m a little more liberal in my tastes, I have to agree with her.
When did motorcycle styling change from machines that had a flowing beauty to things that look like the designer was enraptured by a bucket of used razor blades? What’s with all the sharp edges and creases that really have no purpose, other than “Style”?
I don’t believe that all motorcycles should be styled like Cruisers, but then again what’s the attraction in a pile of scraps from a sheet metal shop? My taste in Origami ends with those little birds made from folded paper.
To answer the question of which new bike would I take, if I could have any one bike from the show; I would probably go for the Sportster 1200 T. It’s a tough call between that and the Street 750, but the hard bags and 4 ½ gallon gas tank are enough to tip the balance.
Of course, if Erik were to re-do the Thunderbolt (with the same beautiful lines), I’d jump on that in a heartbeat; but I’m only talking about bikes that were at the show. There are lots of bikes that I’d like to have, but they weren’t there.
I love going to the Show. It immerses me in the world of Motorcycles, it’s a chance to see what’s new and it gives me lots to think about.
It was fun to see George (Griffmeister), Frank (Froggy) and Bobby (Baf) at the Dinosaur. I'm also kind of glad that the cooks lost our order, 'cause that way we got to talk for that much longer. The free dessert that the waitress gave us didn't hurt, either.

I found myself attracted to the "simpler" bikes myself. The YZF-R1 is a wonder of technology, but I was much more attracted to the YZF-R3. The seating position was more comfortable and I'm afraid I just don't understand why anyone would want a street bike so damned powerful you need all kinds of sophisticated electronics to keep you from killing yourself.

Also still LOVE that Royal Enfield GT, especially in red.

Motus is STILL too damned expensive for what you get. I do like the new BMW R1200RS but I wish it had the duo-lever front end instead of the standard-issue USD forks. I see why they didn't use the telelever (the radiator gets in the way) but that doesn't explain why they just didn't go with the duo-lever like they use on the new K-bikes. But of all the bikes BMW had on display, it was the F800GT that hit most of my "boxes."

That Slingshot looks like a car that was cut in half and someone grafted on a single wheel in the back to cut costs. It's HUGE! There is NOTHING even remotely "motorcycle" about that monstrosity. I'd use the money to buy that thing and get a Mazda Miata instead. May not turn as many heads, BUT if it rains, I can put the top up. If it's cold, I can turn on the heater. And I can drive it in all 50 states WITHOUT a helmet.

I was surprised that NONE of the "Piaggio Group" bikes were there. No MV Agusta, no Moto Guzzi, no Aprilia. How is it that little companies like Motus and Johnny Pag can afford to go to this show, but a giant like Piaggio takes a pass?

I'm not into cruisers (AT ALL) but that new Indian Scout looks REALLY interesting. I'm just not into the whole "forward controls" thing. Even on my scooter, I keep my feet as far back as I can on the boards and only use the forward position to occasionally stretch. I can't imagine having to keep my feet out there all the time, not to mention what I'd have to do in the case of large, unavoidable bumps in the road.

Someone just pointed out another noticeable absence (though they MAY'VE been there and I just didn't see them): I didn't see either Brammo OR Zero. I know Brammo was there last year. Only electric bike on display was a static display model of the Livewire at the Harley exhibit. It was up on a pedestal so you couldn't sit on it or anything... just walk around and look at it.
