Had our appointment with Dr. Hartman, the neurosurgeon, today. He gave us the results of the CT scan that Dave had on the 30th. The infection is all gone! The area where the frontal sinuses used to be looks good, as does the rest of the brain, overall. He's very impressed with just how well the brain looks given how incredibly sick Dave was just a couple of months ago and the condition he was in when he first saw him. He doesn't need to see him for anymore follow up visits, and has discharged us on to the next set of doctors.

There is a "spot" on the left side of the brain in one of the areas where they had to drill a hole to drain a pool of infection. Dr. Hartman said he didn't want to call it a stroke, but it is an area where there is visible damage, and its function could quite possibly never return to 100%. This area controls math, numbers, and is the engineering part of the brain. He explained that this can also affect hand-eye coordination, and the ability to read or follow directions or perform visual replications. For example, one of the tests for this function is having someone look at a picture of blocks stacked a certain way and have them replicate it. When Dave mentioned one of his hobbies is building and woodworking, Dr. Hartman explained that when making something, the left side of the brain may cause him to be all wrong on the numbers, but the the right side of the brain could compensate and take over and may make something very pretty and artistic. I imagine there will be quite a few interesting projects emerging from the workshop in the near future. Dave is very happy that he already has the cabin built. Haha!!

Today was the last day of anti-seizure meds. Dr. Hartman said if he was going to have a seizure, it would probably occur within the next couple of weeks. The guidelines for the next couple of weeks are not to drive (of course), no climbing, no lifting over 5 pounds and no operating of heavy equipment. (He explained that a seizure wouldn't kill Dave; that most people die from having a seizure while driving on the road and wreck, while operating equipment and wreck, or they've climbed on their roof and fall when they seize) He told me what to do in the event he does start to have a seizure and what to tell the ER staff when we take him in. Dave has assured me he won't have a seizure. (oh...okay!) Of course, I may end up with a nervous tick and a bad heart from the stress of waiting for the next two weeks to creep by without incident.

Our next stops are the neurologist and the ENT. Dr. Hartman explained that the neurologist will monitor the damaged area of the brain, and will decide if anti-seizure meds will be needed in the future. He will also monitor the brain waves and activity over the next few months. The ENT will need to begin working on the lower sinuses to avoid any complications with future infections. The ENT will also be the one that will need to monitor and treat any future infections that may occur.

The speech therapist will be coming through the first week of February. Then, we'll be released on our own. There's not much more that can be done by a trained professional therapist. We're at the point now that all we can do is continue practicing and re-practicing, working on getting those neurons to keep trying to re-connect. We have all the materials and exercises needed. Dr. Hartman said the best therapy from now on will be to keep making the mistakes and eventually the brain may just "get it". And of course, time. That ever elusive "wait and see" and "give it time" combo. Everyday, a little better.

Until the next bit of news fit to print, love to all of y'all and hope everything is well with you and yours.

Buellish - it was so good to see you this past weekend!!! Can't wait till we can hang out together on the porch in March!

Hey Vern!
I'm doing pretty good I reckon.
Really looking forward to March.
Kinda nervous though, it'll be the first real outting since I got sick. I know I'm gonna have a hard time with faces and names, but I'll muddle through.
The last of my speech therapy is Tuesday.
Hopefully I'm far enough along to work on my own.
Is it March yet?

Good to hear Dave!

I will interpret for you on the porch if needed.I worked with a buddy of mine on his speech recovery after a stroke.

His problem was that he could not find a word or lost his train of thought, usually three or four words into a sentence. He knew what he wanted to say, but could not hold the thought focus long enough or find the words.

He was easy for me to help, everyone else was babying him and finishing his sentences. His wife said that every time he and I had a conversation his speech improved. I just never let him "think" about speech, rather just to speak. I never finished his thoughts for him like she did. She was helping but annoying him after his initial recovery, because she always finished his sentences for him. He got to where he was leaning on her to do this.

I'd get him mad at first, because I knew what he was trying to say when his words stopped. I wouldn't let his wife finish for him, then I'd get him laughing, then he would spout a retaliation sentence when he forgot to "think" about his speech. After several conversations he started telling his wife to stop finishing his sentences.

It was an amazing process to watch. It took him a few years to get back to a normal speech pattern. It was like watching a butterfly force its way out of a cocoon.

vern, I'm not as bad as that any more.
Its just slurred speech and lose track some times.
My big problem is figuring things out, problem solving, and math is really difficult for me.
There was a lot of pressure on the area that is engineering and language.
Speech therapy has helped out a lot.
Matt, it'll be good to finally meet you.
Mike, since it is my leading edge, it would be difficult not to!

This is cool. It is like we are having a conversation on BadWeB, you know.....typing and such. You couldn't do that a few weeks ago. A few weeks before that we were concerned that you may never be able to again.

Good to see Dave! Very good indeed!

Head up this "Glitch Badness" thing! When you get a chance, work on the T-shirts. We are looking forward to them.

Glitch:

So cool to see you making so much progress. . . . this really is the coolest thing to hit Badweb in a long time.

There are likely some words you may have forgotten that you may not hear around the house and the hospital . . . . your friends will be more than ready to reintroduce you to them.

:-)

And . . . twinxst you and I . . some of my best times involved slurred speech and foggy memories.

:-)

Keep at it !

Yes, it's great to see you posting Glitch.

Isn't somebody bringing a Ural with a sidecar to the meet? I'm thinking you may not quite be ready for two wheels by March, but I'm betting you'd be up for a 3-wheeled romp around the "triangle".

I have no way to do t-shirts, and not sure I have the skill right now.

You probably don't, but hey at this point there is still time, and just one day at a time, it appears that you are getting better. Who knows what a few more weeks might bring. If someone can get into it to help you do it I'd sure like to order something.

I can't do the shirts at this time because business things have me pulling too many directions. I get on here day or night usually between coats of paint to keep me from rushing dry times between coats. Heck it is Saturday and I may be done for the day near 8:00. Then I have to be back at it tomorrow all day to be ready for Monday when my help comes to work. It gets like this when I am between having enough work for another person and finding someone totally qualified with skills and tools and actually desiring to produce. I'm sorry, I believe right now I need a nap.
