Gattaca is real science fiction, which are stories about how advancements in technology affect human society. The vast majority of 'sci-fi' films aren't really sci-fi, just shoot-'em-ups in space.

Tom, GREAT catch there- I've not seen Gattaca in a loooong time. Certainly one of the best stories in sci-fi, properly brought to the big screen- and now, my lil' ol' 32" Vizio screen!

Thanks!

I came home from work last nite and my honey wanted to watch "Just Like Old Times", with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn- I had to think to myself that they just don't make movies like this anymore- fun, witty, and innocent entertainment. Modern production values and junk muck it all up most of the time now.

Keep on keeping on with this thread!

IMHO, here's a few recommendations off the beaten path, or worth another look if they were big when released. Years and major stars' names included for easier searching.

John Carter (2012) Sci-Fi based on Edgar Rice Burrough's finest work. Better by far than the critics would have you believe. Taylor Kitsch.

For Greater Glory (2012) Andy Garcia.

The Time Traveler's Wife (2009) Rachel McAdams.

Lawless (2012) Tom Hardy.

The Scarlet and the Black (1983) Gregory Peck.

Kill the Irishman (2011) Ray Stevenson.

The Dish (2000) Sam Neil.

Five Minutes of Heaven (2009) Liam Neeson.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005) Tommy Lee Jones.

The Straight Story (1999) Richard Farnsworth.

Ulee's Gold (1997) Peter Fonda.

Seven Pounds (2008) Will Smith.

Apaloosa (2008) Ed Harris.

Matewan (1987) Chris Cooper.

Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison (1957) Robert Mitchum.

The Man From Earth (2007) David Lee Smith.

When Did You Last See Your Father? (2007) James Broadbent.

The Last American Hero (1973) Jeff Bridges.

Imposter (2001) Gary Sinise.

And one indie film that's not on NetFlix (yet): The Best Bar in America (2013)

Don't know your taste in music, but the History of the Eagles is now on Netflix and it's excellent. I think it's about 3 hours long. In the middle when it says something to the effect, "that's a story for another time", keep watching, the rest of the story is about to start.
