Hmmm, the Daytona Motor Group couldn't come to an agreement with the new management of North American Superbike Racing. I'd say there's just a little vested interest on their part in seeing it fail. Reminds me of when BRP just about had the deal done with acquiring all the rights to the Buell Motorcycle Company when someone at Harley Davidson realized that if BMC became a success under BRP, then Harley would look like a bunch of chumps, so they squashed the deal. Better to kill it rather than let someone else be successful.* *Note: Allegation only. This was reported by several reliable people, but I don't believe any concrete proof was ever provided. | ||

Don't forget selling MV Agusta BACK to the Castiglioni brothers for $1.00. Those guys made more money off of selling High and buying back Low from the Motor Company than I think they ever did actually selling motorcycles. | ||

jeesh! how about an accurate thread title? the "200" already has a promoter [ISC] - there's no sanctioning organization, yet, to run the races | ||

When New Hampshire Motor Speedway tried to do the same thing after the AMA dropped them the results were laughable. Nobody went to see the races. Laconia Bike Week lives on in all its bumper to bumper glory, but nobody spends any money at the Speedway. I see similar results coming for DIS unless they offer huge purses to attract the big name teams. I really doubt they'll do that. After all, they've done their best to kill motorcycle road racing over the past few years; why should they try to bring it back to life? I do worry about what they're going to do to Flat Track since they still control that. | ||

I was told the BIG difference between NASCAR fans and Motorcycle racing fans is that NASCAR fans come in for the race, and leave right after. Motorcycle fans come in for the whole WEEK and spend a LOT more money in the surrounding area as well. Granted, I'm sure most of the people who go to Bike Week are hardly even aware there is racing going on, but... eventually the COMMUNITY will feel the loss, if not the track itself. | ||

Years ago I had a conversation over coffee at the B&N across from the DIS. The other gentleman was a nicely-dressed "city father" kind of guy. I asked him, "Of the three groups that visit Daytona each year (the NASCAR Fans, the Bikers, or the Spring Breakers) which group do you prefer?" "The Bikers, by far. Consider this: The NASCAR people roll into town in their RV's, camp at the Speedway, buy groceries, and cook out at the track. The Spring Breakers cram 8 to a room, live on beer, Cheez Whiz & Crackers, and hot dogs, tear up the rooms, and cause all sorts of immature mayhem. The Bikers, on the other hand,stay in the hotels, eat out all their meals, shop, patronize the local establishments, and don't stay up late causing trouble... anymore... They spend an average of $1500 each during the week, compared to a third of that for the other two groups. So, yes, The Bikers. Welcome!" | ||

This news blows. It was the only perk I had for dealing with the all the leather biker wanna be's for the week Trust me not having a race wont hurt Daytona bike week one bit. You had to HUNT for info on the races and when they actually were. They did a piss pour job at best promoting that race locally and the Harley snobs don't want any thing to do with them there Jap bikes. The amount of people that went and watch was comical how small it was. I loved it, you could walk around not fighting giant crowds, security was nice to you and would let you damn near go any where. This past year I took my son and he had a absolute ball! He got hats and autographs from the top three in every race. He was right against the ropes in victory lane and got soaked with champagne at the end of the day (was fun explaining the the Mrs why our 5 year old smells like a drunk). My son as well as my daughter will be devastated there inst a race this year. He has talked it up so much that his little sister was hell bent on it being her turn to go. I always thought this was a bad time for it and that it would be much better suited to put it in with the other race week stuff but then I guess that would have been seen as trying to steal NASCAR thunder and that is a giant no no around these parts. Chauly - you are correct. I know a ton of people in the food / service industry around here (damn near only major industry around here) and they all prefer bike week. The smart bars around here make enough during Oktoberfest and bike week to pay there bills for the YEAR and the other 50 weeks are gravy. Speed week sucks for local money and spring break is dead, the city has been killing that for years. | ||

Bikeweek had NOTHING to do with the Daytona 200 snoozefest. The people there for naked cabbage and female mud wrestling, chrome trailer queens an beer were never the ones who supported the 200. Racing needs PUBLICITY - motorcycle racing does not need the 200. Spectators bring in virtually NO money, TV and advertising does. The 200 will become an independent race like the TT. They being DMG will have to subsidize it for a few years. I think the only reason they bought the series from the AMA was to try and protect their race, not that they did any good. They do have some advantages it is at an off time of year compared to most other racing and it is a different kind of race, and it does have history. I think the TT went through some lean years after the FIM pulled their world championship status Sean and Matt could correct me if I am wrong. But as part of an American championship it is done. | ||

I only watched the 200 one time because a friend of mine got free tickets and invited me. I loved going to the track on Thursday for all the old bikes. Listening to the different era bikes making the rounds on the track was really cool. I really love the bumble bee sound of the British triples from the 70's! Looking and listening to all the old hardware was what I really enjoyed. | ||
