My buddy and I are going to take a chilly ride south (we're in Ottawa, Ontario) this weekend, and are looking for some tips.

We're looking for a place a bit south or east of Adirondack Park, either in a city or town, that has a restaurant/pub with great food (BBQ a big +), and a great beer selection. Basically the type of place you want to spend an evening at, eating and drinking a ton of good beer. That's the easy part.

The hard part is that we want the restaurant to be within walking (crawling) distance to a good cheap motel where we can stay.

Anyone have any good suggestions?

Trevor

See what's available in Troy, NY (home of the closest Dinosaur BBQ to Adirondack Park).

Lake George, NY is a good spot that is a little south east. Plenty of hotels and motels in the area, plenty of bars and restaurants too. I can't vouch on the beer thing, I don't drink.

It is a hot summer vacation spot, but since it is the off season whatever is still open will be more reasonably priced.

Did Lake George in the spring. Good time - Adirondack Pub & Brewery was a decent place. Great beer! Most motels seem booked for this weekend though...

I was looking at the Dinosaur BBQ in Troy, but it doesn't seem like there are any accommodations close by. I'll check again.

I've ridden by the Tail of the Pup in Lake Placid - didn't know they had accommodations. I''ll check it out.

Thanks!

Lake Placid is way NORTH of Adirondack Park, by the way...

Lake placid is in Adirondack park... the northern part yes, but in the park.

It is a bit close to us for my taste - I had wanted something a bit south of the park or east.

Just stayed at Best Western on Western Ave in Albany, near SUNY campus. We walked to a new place right next door that has GREAT selection on tap, good burgers, pub/bar/grille food. Called City Line, at 1200 Western Avenue. Got Best Western room online for about a hundred a night.

Great riding north or south of there. We came through the Chatham area just south, went up toward Saratoga Springs. Saratoga Springs is about equal distance from Albany to the south up to Lake George.

Pretty long weekend ride from where you are, though...

My suggestion: find the food, then scope out the room selection nearby. Good food is harder to find!

There's a Best Western Plus at Franklin Square, just next to Dinosaur in Troy.

Hi Fahren,

Just checked the Best Western on Western in Albany, and the Best WEstern in Troy - neither of them has any available rooms for Saturday.

Too bad - both looked great!

This is Columbus Day weekend. All the leaf peepers from New York and Boston are out in force. I think you'll have trouble finding a room anywhere north of NYC.

There's also a Days Inn on Western Ave, right next to Best Western. Lower room price - looks like rooms available. Hope that helps.

Fahren, I had seen that Days Inn as well - checked it earlier and nothing available. Just checked again and nothing available.

Columbus Day weekend... We've noticed that that seems to fill up the motels pretty good.

Yeah - miss Thanksgiving dinner (although we will be back Sunday night probably -weather looks yucky for Monday), but getting to go for a nice ride will more than make up for it!

Brumbear, we've booked a room at the Bolton Pines Motel. We'll see how that goes. Restaurant looks good - a bit on the pricey side for me though. But we'll probably give it a chance. Love that German beer!

Thanks all!

Hotels.com. They show availability at Best Western $84 per night.

Not sure if this link will work for you, but if not go to hotels.com. Or try bookings.com

Fahren, that does work and there is availability - for next weekend. When I change the date to tomorrow night, all booked up. In fact, it also says that there are "107 additional hotels are not available on your travel dates."

Leaf peepers for sure!

Perhaps we shouldn't have planned to go this weekend, or shouldn't have left the planning till the last minute...

So, from Bolton you are not far from Tracy road or ensign pond road. Both are east-west from Moriah to Hudson. Google them, worth the side trip to scrub the edges of your tires. Watch out for wet leaves!!
