Since I've yet to install freight train horns on my bikes and cars, holy cow do I wish these new guns will be implemented!

Virginia; the state that outlaws radar detectors. They use a device to scan vehicles for radar detectors in operation.

ever text while riding? i don't recommend it, and not just because you have to remove your glove.

So- my '92 Nissan truck doesn't have Siri, so I have no experience. Thankfully Blake, you probably still have your eyes up and hands on the steering wheel/controls.

Does anyone give a crap about this? Have fun when that new teenage driver makes pizza out of you.

Ask anyone what the last text message they sent while driving... and they won't remember what it was......that's how unimportant and pointless it was .........../

Squids, maybe not so much to "care" about this, but being "aware" could save your life as something like 25% of all accidents these days involves being distracted by cell phone use.
Personally I'd like to tag everyone with a paint ball splatter when I see them doing this sort of carp. Or something to that effect.

Funny thing, but lately I keep see an add with some celebrity that I don't know, talking about how she now tweets #x when she's about to drive to let everybody know.

My first though on this is, I really couldn't care less when someone is about to drive. Beyond that, there's nothing I can do to ensure that they drive safely. It's still up to the driver to put the damn phone away! Is society really getting this stupid? If so, then perhaps we NEED to have cops actively searching out people texting while driving. Damn sad!

"paint ball splatter"

Yeah, I've thought of that, to clearly/permanently mark idiot drivers. Maybe the removal solution could only be procured for a HIGH fee at the local DMV, after they watched a mandatory 30-45 minute safety video... whoops, just daydreaming there!

The only real solution is eternal, relentless vigilance in defensive riding/driving. I put up the OP because I was heartened that our LEO's MIGHT just have another good tool to help decrease the risk.

In a perfect world, all cel phones would be designed to only operate hands-free while in motion. But hey, what's a little death and maiming anyway when telecom's reaching for the goal of higher profits?

I've got a buddy who's been pushing the "idiot dart" idea since the '70s. When you see an idiot driving on the road you have the options of shooting a simple, harmless suction cup dart at their car. When a cop sees a car with three or more idiot darts, they issue a ticket to them for being an idiot.

Yeah, but the paintball idea would fail less. Very similar idea though.

Going a little more Mad Max, I'd kinda like a Tazer type thingy that would just zap the black box on some of the more moronic a$$hats I've seen.

Been out running errands today, seems my mood will be better served staying home and beating back the honeydo list...

If people would just put the phone in Airplane Mode when they get in the car, Problem Solved. How hard is that?

How's this going to work then? the onboard data system in our trucks uses gsm frequencies. My co-driver could be texting in the bunk while I'm driving. Am I going to get a tug every 5 mins? How can it be proved? is it going to be guilty until you prove by your phone records that it wasn't you? seems to me an impossible thing to enforce without wholesale national legislation on intrusion into private lives.

There's an app you can install that detects when you're driving or in a moving vehicle & blocks the function, seems simple to me.

Damn Grumps- good ?'s. Technology does and will have an ability to outrun our sensibilities.

"There's an app you can install"

Got an app that deals with human nature?

I run the a$$-hat app through my ROM every time I get on the bike.

but the Ministry Of Truth Doesn't say so. ( massive sarcasm )

That is a legit civil rights concern. Politicians don't get tech. the burden of proof in the war between citizens and the Police must lie on the police.

And I hate the distracted driving while texting folk. It wouldn't be so bad if they just killed themselves, but they usually take others with them. Local case 4 teen girls in car.

I do have real problems with "my computer says you were texting" when I have a phone that updates itself and does it's own texting without my permission.

Crusty, that's clever.

But... you're supposed to silence your phone when you go into a theater.

The bottom line is...

You can't make anything idiot-proof, because idiots are ingenious.

Take away people's ability to text while driving, and they'll start playing angry birds while driving.

Maintaining good situational awareness, and having a good working knowledge of yourself and your limits... those are the biggest keys to staying alive. In the majority of situations.

I don't like any law that infringes my ability to do things of my own free will. If I'm going to text and drive, a cop with a magic radar gun isn't going to stop me. The majority of people will have the same mentality.

Especially since there aren't enough cops on the road to keep up with the work load.

And... if you maintain good SA, and break the law responsibly... 9 times out of 10, you will see a cop before he's close enough to get any dirt on you (radar gun or magic cell phone gun). Not to mention the previously stated problems with the tech.

Torque, your right. A lot of folks take that same attitude about having insurance, using turn signals, speeding, littering etc etc....

I bet the front camera brake assist thing in some new cars are the bomb in heavy traffic.... think of the extra productivity you can accomplish on your way to work!!

There are proposed laws in many states and municipalities for "Driving While Distracted" Would apply for texting as well as reaching around to whack your kid or reading while driving (all of which have had drivers written-up)

Exactly. Without knowing details on how this magic gun works, I am skeptical on its effectiveness. I receive texts all the time, from friends, family, and coupons and other junk from various companies. I have mine hands free, Cortana reads them to me through bluetooth in my truck or my bluetooth intercom in my helmet. I get the lasted crappy offer from Dominos while riding and even if I didn't have the message read it could get me pulled over?

A text message, phone call and data transfer emit different frequencies that can be distinguished by the device ComSonics is working on

This isn't even true anymore. Voice and SMS services are moving onto the data spectrums to reduce costs. Still years away before it is all 100% on data, but it is going that way.

Also again lack of details, I bet this device can't tell the difference between a driver and a passenger.

Nothing to do with the telecoms, it simply is impossible for it to figure out if you are driving or simply along for the ride. Millions use their phone every day in NYC on the buses and trains and cabs. Some GPS apps won't let you enter information while moving, Waze pops up and says something along the lines of "are you a passenger, only passengers can enter data while moving". Needless to say I've lied and said I was a passenger on many occasions.
