So...I started an LLC last year. Residential rental property, live audio production, and (coming soon) a recording studio in the basement. My webmaster is the guitarist in one of the bands I used to work with. Note the key words "used to". Today...I have no website, and my email is kaput. Wiped out. I texted him and asked if there was a server problem...but I suspect he just got a pissy attitude and deleted everything. His lack of response supports that. A whois inquiry shows him as the registrar of my domain. "What do I do about that" is a question. Another question is, does anyone feel like authoring a fairly self-sustaining, "autopilot" type website for me? I had an event calendar for gigs and studio bookings; I had a page for available rentals where I could post photos of the properties and contact information; I had a homepage describing the LLC as a whole; I had an email address that I logged into thru Horde. I hate facebook, so I don't really need or want any social media feeds. Would it help business? Maybe...IF I bothered to keep it updated. I'd rather be absent than out of date. Android remote access is a must for both website and email. If someone can set it up, register it, and give me the admin passwords so I can edit/add/update pages as needed...let me know, and I can send info to you. | ||

You should register your own domain. That way YOU are the owner. Use a gmail address for the contacts and never an address of the domain you are registering. That way you'll always have access to email from the registrar. (Unless google goes kaput.) This is important because they will (they should) verify that you own the domain via email if you need to make any changes. | ||

What Hootowl said. Just finished a 6-7 month battle getting the old 'webmaster' out of our hair, saving the site and getting the new one relaunched on different hosting. He set his hooks in to stuff years before my arrival at the company and management/ownership was unaware of the set up for everything from registration to simple email notifications. There were several other issues including intellectual property claims (in error on the part of the 'webmaster') and brief 'hostage' period with the site. Feel free to PM for more info and caveats. While it sounds like you've gotten a taste of the fun, there are still wrinkles you can fall in to unwittingly. | ||

The good news is, I'm not a huge presence and have zero problem switching to a different domain name. This guy isn't worth my energy and neither is locking down the domain name. I'll just tweak it and do my own registration thru someone like godaddy or networksolutions. They offer domain, hosting, and email for not too much per year... | ||

GoDaddy does a decent job in general, and a bangup job for the money. If you want to invest a little time setting up WordPress, you can have a decent little web based glossy brochure with contact information. That's the 20% investment to solve 80% of the problem. Setting up the ecommerce part of it is the 80% of the investment to solve 20% of the problem. Turn on the GoDaddy two factor authentication for your administrative access (uses text messages to your cell phone). | ||

Yeah the old site was WordPress...I'm getting familiar with their editing. Similar to desktop publishing stuff I did in college... The other question I have is, is it worth the money for a "private" whois registration? They tout decreased hacking, spamming, and other stuff...I guess, how much of a problem is it really for a small audio company in MD? Not like I'm a huge conglomerate...or a particularly juicy target... | ||

Maybe he got signed to a deal and doesn't have time? Didn't you have a link up a few weeks ago (or more) showing your site? (looked good) Do you still have all the files from the website? I have a few sites up running... adding stuff as I go. (very plain) used to be more involved but with just frames and image mouse overs. I can probably help you get going. I use Godaddy and dreamweaver via FTP to maintain my sites. I paid for the website builder software thinking it would be better for me but ended up doing it myself with dreamweaver. You probably could build your site up pretty good using the website builder at godaddy. | ||

But, I am definitely not a guru by any means I only know the basics of website building with dreamweaver, and my graphic creativity is close to zero. | ||

Don't bother with the private registration, just use an email provider that will filter spam (like google mail). Set up an email fowarder at GoDaddy so it looks like your email address, but godaddy forwards it to your gmail account. Like I said, do turn on the two factor controls for account admin though. | ||

Yeah, my Yahoo mail has been hacked enough, I always use the 2-point system... |
