Strictly speaking this has nothing to do with GOVERNMENT run healthcare, but a LOT to do with the state of the art in healthcare today.

http://radaronline.com/exclusives/2014/06/ucsb-sho oter-elliot-rodger-xanax-made-him-withdrawn-lonely -isolated-anxious/

Or maybe the 2nd Amendment thread, or the as yet not started WTF is wrong with the planet thread....

Psycho-fix ya up- drugs figure big in a lot of these rampage suicide cases. For the most part the desired effect of these drugs is to be a "mood leveler", in other words to make you more docile, calm, mellow, zombie. In point of fact Apathy is the desired goal. This takes the burden of dealing with a hyper, emotional human being off the general public, and especially teachers and parents.

I think, ( with no medical proof ) that it's all about the manic-depressive state of being that a lot of people go through, in varying degrees, especially in adolescence, where the authority figures around you don't want to deal with you as an adult, and dismiss your problems as unimportant.

In some cases it's because they went through the same thing, and feel "you'll get over it", like they think they did. Always astounds me how people seem to completely forget how things were when they were younger. True, I have trouble understanding some of the really stupid things I did, but I do remember thinking it was the end of the world that ( fill in the blank... Susan rejected me for the prom? I couldn't get the hovercraft for a date? I couldn't go skiing with the club because the Ice age was over? )

The pain and alienation was real at the time, and the time is when kids freak out.
Drugging them into submission is proving to be a really bad idea.

The trouble seems to be that manic states can be horrible, or wonderful, depending on the person. ( Mozart is a great example ) The depressed states that follow are generally non-productive, and can be suicidal.
But.
What are we costing ourselves by trying to stop all unwanted emotional states, and substituting dull sameness?

Many people on mood drugs go off them because they don't feel normal, or feel like they are behind glass. So they quit taking their meds.

And when the chemical bondage snaps or is thrown off? Too often people die.

I suppose I could blame the drug companies, or the Medical establishment, or Joe Biden ( who's obviously off his meds ) but I think it's more systemic than that. Perhaps a selfishness in society that doesn't want to deal with other's problems? Or is that a bleeding heart reaction to the old school, "get your own act together" attitude?

Either way.
Drugs to make you fit in...... fail again.

Freddy Thanks for your admission of Politics as a Hobby.

Your grasp of reality is amazing Politics has real effects on the lives of people. Its not a extracurricular activity as such as motorcycling!
Those positions you find so cute and the Teachers lounge type gotcha games actually have impacts on peoples lives. The ones that pay tax bills for the most of country!
When you fail to even evaluate any one else's position on an issue and then denigrate their position your intolerance and bigotry is on display for all to see.
Your destroying the liberal claim of tolerance of diversity by your demand for total conformity.
All your doing is exposing the intellectual bankruptcy of your positions
Badwebers enjoy spirited debate on most any subject however basic intellectual dishonesty tends to cause a breakdown in discourse as you have found.
Your feeble attempts at intimidation of other Badwebers by pointed barbs. The point of which is to embarrass or intimidate them into bowing to your opinions.
Your finding that will not happen around here. Refining your debate skills and developing the ability be an honest broker in the field of ideas will be much more rewarding than just being another mean condescending leftist.
Oh and good luck on your impending Surgery!

The clinical study and trial for Lithium as a 'cure' for manic depression had as many suicides as 'positive' outcomes.

The original trial was done in Australia in the late 60's. The suicides were considered an aberant appearance .... but the 'positive' results (with just as much percentage) were hailed as a success.

So either you are mellow and controllable - or you kill yourself - it was green lighted on those paramaters - and has set the precedence for every metal based mood altering drug since.

The risk mitigation in trials is always suicide / positive outcome - where suicide is double - .... they go back to the drawing board.
enjoy the show.

I'm a social liberal ( aka libertarian ) ff is a regressive.
( I blame Rush...... but mostly the regressives for stealing the name. Progressives lie. Always. )

They don't need saving.

Lithium, maybe.

Its a mental illness for the blind followers and a source of wealth and power for the evil.

We have a good example here in ff. She is dishonest on multiple levels. Ignorant of history or dishonest......impossible to tell. I assume ignorant from the unfocused rage.

It's quite sad. That's why I don't respond to her much anymore. Feels cruel picking on the girl.

Just c&p her statements. ( not the lame insults ) and you find her masters.

I actually thought gay libertarian was one of her best.

Even Bill Clinton couldn't lie All the time. He'd never get his Big Mac.

Time to come out of the closet Aesquire. I've always thought your prose (hardly) had that feminine touch which is the reason I previously asked if you were a boy or a girl. You didn't answer but since you are known as Patrick and not Patricia I suspect you are in hiding. Your attempts at diverting focus on your sexual preferences by a sophomoric attack on mine is amateurish.
If I were you, I'd take a break from the keyboard and take a long look at yourself in the mirror. There's a reason for your frustrations (and there are many) that may be rooted in your anatomy.

Here's where Fred's innate dishonesty shows.

We all knew that he wasn't posting a link to taxpayer funded gender surgery to critique the practice.

He lacks the communication skills to even tell us it was a tease. He's had days to tell us the reason or deny personal interest but never has. Just rage at others.

Even our support for his personal choices infuriates him.

No sense in asking questions of a liar that refuses any honest discussion and is off his meds.

Prime candidate for future headlines involving rampage suicide or hostage situation.

Please get counseling.

That is not a fact. Why would someone think they are being ridiculed for a private personal choice?

I supported your supposed choice, ( you gave no context, and never corrected that assumption ) told you it was going to be a benefit in the local city, and argued for you getting the operations paid by taxpayers.

It's like you yelling "hamburger", and having someone offer one, and then you complain we are mocking your obesity.

http://www.military.com/daily-news/2014/05/30/shin seki-fires-phoenix-va-leaders-others-to-follow.htm l

The Shape of Things To Come.

General Shinseki, who was supposed to fix the VA, apparently sat around playing Medal Of Honor his entire appointment, until the scandal broke.

If this reminds you of the Obamacare staffers, it's not a coincidence.

Shinseki said he was going to clean house, and then.... he was gone. And the House is still dirty.

http://www.jerrypournelle.com/chaosmanor/general-s hinseki-resigns/

As I expected, General Shinseki resigned before his threat to fire all the officials involved in the Phoenix Office could take effect, and his request for authority to actually manage the VA and fire incompetent senior VA officials everywhere was never sent to Congress. We will see what the outcome of his “firing” the Phoenix officials will be, but since it will be vigorously resisted by both the Civil Service Commission and the public employees unions, we can safely predict that it will be a long time before anyone actually starts packing his office memorabilia into bankers boxes.

If anyone had been serious about reforming the bureaucracy, his resignation would not have been accepted before US Marshals or the VA Police Service escorted a dozen officials out into the street while the news media broadcast their shame to the world. Of course that did not happen and won’t happen. The Civil Service knows it will be protected from incidents like that, although given the popular demand for swift and immediate remedies there were moments of actual terror within the VA.

Some military publications are taking the firing seriously: http://www.military.com/daily-news/2014/05/30/shin seki-fires-phoenix-va-leaders-others-to-follow.htm l I would like to think they are right, but absent any reports of actual departures – surely some local with an iPhone would get something up on the net if there were — I remain skeptical. And his threat to go through the bureaucracy with fire and sword is now nullified, to the vast relief of the bureaucracy and the White House. This was, after all a crisis, with genuine public anger. It could not be ignored, and Shinseki, having retired as a four star general, had no reason not to carry out his threat. For the VA bureaucrats who participated in the recent activities, the threat was real, and they knew General Shinseki’s anger was not only real, but fired by guilt for not having discovered earlier just how much wool had been pulled over his eyes.

Everyone has known that there were problems in the VA’s performance. Candidate Barack Hussein Obama, having served on the Veterans Affairs Committee from 2005 to 2008 was in a position to know more than most, and in several campaign speeches chided the Bush Administration for not doing enough for Veterans. Congress enacted the “performance bonus” system in an attempt to give VA officials an incentive to get the lead out and get to work. VA appropriations have risen as number of veterans served fell (due to deaths of aging WWII and Korean vets) so that the dollars/ vet available to the VA has doubled in recent years. The increased money was spent. Much of it was spent on performance bonuses to the VA officials – and of those many cooked the books, keeping secret lists of veterans with long wait times while officially reporting reduced wait times. Assuming the facts now being reported are even partly true, some of those senior officials seem to have been rewarded for their superior service to veterans while in actuality the veterans were dying while awaiting treatment

The House sent a bill to the Senate to fix this. It died there under Harry.. The Senate has a "better" bill that won't offend their Union Donors.

And people are still dying.

The problem with the VA is simple
Supply vs Demand / Quality * Bureaucracy fn Tenure = ROI

So you have more Vets dumping into the eligiblity roles of VA care (because you have two wars - and previous generations are coming into 'hospital and hospice' care eras)
and a shrinking supply - the states are on the hook for contribution to the VA facilities - and there has been drastic funding cut over the 15 years for facilities and technology
and you have 'case managers' (MSC's) that have equal or greater power than the doctor providing the care ....

this is the 'best' model they could front for how Socialized medicine will 'work' in America.... it has a track record of DECADES of failure

The consolidation of Vets under only a few VET approved 'hospitals' is nothing more than a microcosm of what the ACOs are attempting to create.... and they too will fail

silo'd health always does - always will

THIS was the stated purpose of BODontCare. Insuring the uninsured. It has clearly failed in a big way at an incredible price. It's actually amazing that you can spend so much money trying to give away free shit, and still fail so badly. Quite the accomplishment! Time to defund this steaming pile of legislation.

Obamacare Exchanges Are ‘Disappointing’ With Fewer Than 4 Million Newly Insured. The Government Hoped for 26 Million.

Two outcomes were realized:

1) Healthy people are now paying more for insurance, while sick people pay less.

2) Wealthy people are not paying more for insurance, while sick people pay less.

It's a progressive tax on healthcare. If it had been described as such, voted on as such, and passed as such, I'd be a lot less bothered by it.

Can I tweak that quote to add the fundamental rub with the problem?

quote:

Anytime someone gets something they didn't pay for, someone is paying for something they didn't get. And somebody is sitting between the two parties harvesting money and power and adding no value whatsoever.

That distinction shows that even if you *want* redistribution from the "rich" to the "poor", big government isn't going to achieve it in the long term. It will simply transfer money and power from one set of rich people (who do things) to a different set of rich people (who don't do things).

But . . . . it's thrilling to live in the land of opportunity where destitute folks like the Clinton's, who left The White House "dead broke and in debt" (Hillary's words) . . . can, just a few short years later be worth over $150,000,000.

Shame they can't seem to give her current, recently released , book away.

Oh wow, I never heard the Clinton quote. It makes me sick, but I am not surprised at all. Greed is nature.

Benevolence almost exclusively resides in the hearts of the non-greedy. Unfortunately, none of these individuals get elected, or even run for office. Probably because they are squeezed out by the competition from the financially powerful.

Heck, it might be the ridiculous price to run for office.

You need to see a fuller quote to really be sick!

quote:

We came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt, we had no money when we got there, and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages, for houses, for Chelsea’s education. You know, it was not easy.
