How were the pints last night, Rocket? I was pretty jealous that you had access to fantastic pubs and all I could get into was my refrigerator. We do have some world class microbreweries here in San Diego though. Luckily, the Eye of Putin is gazing elsewhere.

Rocket, I hope you understand that you are asking people to believe that the US somehow managed to get armed troops into Soviet territory, undetected. Then that these undetected armed troops started shooting soviet citizens, and soviet law enforcement in the streets, while being video tape. Then these US troops somehow managed to disappear without any trace. This is just for starters, but that's a lot for us to accept.

Lotta oil in the arctic.
Owning that would let him squeeze harder. The existing international law means little to some. Like The O, for example.

This admin. Is incredibly deaf to traditional diplomacy. I'm the first to mock the State Dept. as a bunch of ivory tower pseudo intellectuals who cannot imagine anyone thinking differently than they do...... but not all are like that. The revelation that the Sec State's personal minions didn't even know State had translators before giving a button marked "overcharge" to Russia. ....... incompetence doesn't cover it.

After years of Obama bowing to Kings..... ( not protocol. The President is head of state. ...but Not Ruler. He cannot bow for us. 200 years of precedent. ...gone. ( has anyone had the cojones to tell Obama he isn't a Ruler? I wonder. ))

Then the leak of fu eu....... no wonder Putin shows no trepidation. This is the Big Leagues. He's up against 21st century pee wees who expect a trophy for showing up and do not keep score.

Sifo. You make a couple of errors. The US cia/mercs/nazis that shot up the crowd protesting Russian domination were not on Soviet territory. Yet.

I'm sure we'll find out from the same sources that gave us the merc story that they fled into the night sky with stealth blimps supplied by Red Bull.

When you play at this level, it is no ordinary trivia

Better go back to your golf, your vacations, your teleprompter, your social justice rhetoric

http://www.jerrypournelle.com/chaosmanor/superpowe rs/

But in 1990 the world changed, and the USSR, which had world domination as its goal, was replaced by – well, no one quite knew what it was replaced by. Herman Kahn had predicted before his death in 1983 that if we could avoid a nuclear war in the death throes of the USSR, Russia would revert to what it had always been, a regional power with pan-Slavic interests, and a natural ally of the United States as our relationship with Europe changed from military savior to economic competitor.

Today the President of the United States told Russia that “You are a regional power. The United States is the only super power.” He did not add that the US spends more on its defenses than the rest of the world put together; nor did he mention that our attempts to project that power into the territorial disputes of the Middle East – Kuwait, to begin with – have not always turned out well; we have withdrawn from Iraq leaving an illegal Kurdish Republic which under Obama’s logic Baghdad has every right to repossess, and when we withdraw from Afghanistan it is not settled just how far from Kabul the writ of the President we have installed there will run. Our Navy is now under 300 warships and sinking. In World War Two we launched, crewed, and deployed that many ships in a single month. But that was in another time.

And so we initiate a new Cold War, but one of words. We insult the President of Russia and do him small injuries when it is not clear what we demand to make our wasp stings stop. He will not relinquish the Crimea. The last time the West tried to pry the Crimea out of the fingers of the masters of the Kremlin, it took an army.

Half a league half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred:
‘Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns’ he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

"Never do an enemy a small injury."
Niccolo Machiavelli

A few other good ones...

"The first method of estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him."

That says a lot. What does it mean when your choice of emergency successor is called "just Joe"?

"There is no avoiding war; it can only be postponed to the advantage of others."

I wonder if that's a Hawk mantra. It should be.

"I hold it to be of great prudence for men to abstain from threats and
insulting words towards any one, for neither the one nor the other in any
way diminishes the strength of the enemy; but the one makes him more
cautious, and the other increases his hatred of you, and makes him more
persevering in his efforts to injure you"

Darn smart guy that Niccolo.

Extra points if you don't look this one's author up.

"Only the dead have seen the end of war"

Another quite wise thought, from a different and unexpected source.

"Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack."

One pub I enjoy to frequent in market town Beverley where many good pubs exist, has just started to serve Thatchers cider. Unfortunate name and nothing to do with the old, sorry dead, bat. But it's a bloody good pint of proper west country cider. And strong too!

As for the Ukraine. Well, it's dropped off the headline news (for now), but the talk this week has been strong on our stupid energy minister and cohorts stating now is the time for all in the UK to accept fracking. UK apparently relies on 15% gas from tanks in Germany which are filled with Russian gas. Now our minister tells, fracking won't give us 15% to rid ourselves of the Russian gas, and it won't take effect, you know they gotta invest billions (not millions) and build the darn fracking fecker facilities, until estimated 2027 - 2030. I guess if they want to rid the UK of Russian gas in the meantime, they'd be just as well asking 60 million citizens to fart into jam jars me thinks.

The next big related thing, is our six energy supply companies. Private companies making billions of pounds profit every year on year, and ever increasing our gas and electric bills, are to be investigated by government to see if they're playing fair. The six claim there's no collusion betwixt them, yeah right, but the more reliable news reports have asked, how come they were privatised back in the day to allow competition between them to drive down prices, when in fact their pricing structures and strategies, the difficult and complexities of trying to change suppliers for better deals, etc etc, all six have very similar approaches to all the usual consumer issues. Yeah right no collusion there then. Just like there's no driving down consumer prices through competition but rather them all driving prices up by making them so close no one can be arsed anymore to waste their time and efforts trying to get better deals. And what is the threat to government if they do investigate. That our prices will rise more and our lights will go out if the government attempts to regulate these six cartels of energy. And you can bet some of our ministers will sit on some of these companies board of directors!

Meanwhile 300 odd pieces of something have been seen floating on an ocean somewhere, and 100.000 Russian soldiers, according to BadWeB right wing patriots, are about to invade western Europe. Bring it on I say, comrade.

Why does your Energy minister want to spend billions on fracking?

Our problem here in the Imperial State of NY is our king won't allow it. (He thinks he's king anyway )

You just offer the leases and in a few hours the people who do the work will be negotiating with farmers for rental on the land to stick the wells. Yes it will take months before the pipes get laid to move the gas. Or decades if your protected religious zealots get involved. And they will.

Note to the Americans. Greenies are a protected religion in the UK. Can't fire an employee who spends more time telling fellow workers to go vegan to save the planet than doing their jobs. The more insane.... the more protected.

I get that they want to undercut Russian fuel prices.
What I don't get is why they want to do it by spending your money. Putting the folk in charge of lack of flood control in charge of fuel production is........Soviet.

You remember..... the people that nuke gas leaks? That spill more oil than ship? The folk that killed a SEA?

You charge the fracking companies rent and it actually happens.

Patrick, why do you insist on posting rubbish that does nothing for this topic but encourage those not smart enough to decipher the obvious bs.

According (yeah right, Rocket) to interviews with U.N. diplomats, most of whom preferred to speak on condition of anonymity (yeah right, Rocket) for fear of angering Moscow, the targets of Russian threats (what threats? Rocket) included Moldova, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan as well as a number of African countries.

A spokesman for Russia's Mission to the U.N. denied that Moscow threatened any country with retaliation if it supported the resolution, saying: "We never threaten anyone. We just explain the situation."

According (yeah right, Rocket) to the diplomats, the Russian threats were not specific(really, you don't say. Rocket). But they said it was clear(Doesn't sound clear at all. Rocket) to the recipients of the warnings not to support the resolution that retaliatory measures could(You mean you made this rubbish up then excuse it with a 'could') include steps such as expelling migrant workers from Russia, halting natural gas supplies or banning certain imports to Russia to cause economic harm.

Full of holes and no place for it in the world of fact and truth.

Obviously biased conservative media, ( really, and oddly they are proud of their bias towards individual freedom.... How can you respect that!??) and naturally untrustworthy Western Government.

OTOH, the sales of arms to Iran alone would be reason to doubt the absolutely trustworthy and kind hearted Russian intentions towards world peace..... if you were a brainwashed lickspittle of the running dog lackeys.

As a dedicated couter-revolutionary I find myself in opposition to pretty much everybody, so I'm obviously no judge of Russian intent. So the US is going to build and sell military choppers to the US installed Afghan government. An unelected leadership of a sovereign nation, put there by an invading force. Urgh, sound familiar . The war machine. The money machine. What's the difference....

To address a ballooning deficit, Cameron has cut spending on defense, but protected education, health care, and foreign aid.

Who told this to the author of said bollocks? Health and education are amongst the biggest messes we have in the UK. They're in such a mess there's barely a day doesn't pass when neither subject is in the news.

That article is just a made up nonsense, likely as the journalist who penned it had a quota to fill to warrant the paycheck they receive is all.

Now, now. Kenm123t....

as the National Review opinion column states, you have to get a European alone to get him to admit that the US held off the Russians. In groups, not so much. That's not crazy, it's simple pride, and it's useless to push that button. It's like every war, the rescued and liberated are grateful. Seriously. I've heard stories about the Liberation of Baghdad that are just like the stories of the Liberation of Paris.

however, right after the liberation, some idiots say "you should be grateful". A true statement. In fact they were grateful. Being told you should be grateful is a really annoying thing. Anyone gets sick of that right the Frack away, don't you think? You would. I would.

So the whole "we should just let Europe burn" comment......... just isn't productive.

Yes, it's absolutely true that the NATO age ( apparently about to end ) was a golden era for Europe, and let them indulge in Social Democracies, and Socialized Care. And I agree with your facts, sentiments, and frustration.

Remember. We've always been at war with Eastasia. And it's good to hear what's happening on Airstrip One.

Rocket, Sorry, I don't get the connection between but protected education, health care, and foreign aid. as a statement of Spending Priorities, and the actual success of the programs you say are messes. Apples and Oranges.

I completely believe you when you tell me they are messes. I have an opinion on why they are, but that's off topic.

Most politics IMHO is "your lying sack of .... is worse than Mine!". The personalities of the people involved, since they ARE politicians, are pretty bleakly mostly ego freaks that want to run other people's lives.

We should do a separate thread on political philosophy without the personalities involved, and just first principals and if it's a successful concept and at what costs.... Be darn hard to keep on topic though.
