December 20, 2013: That was the year that was and here are the top ten (in no particular order) military events that defined (or defiled) 2013.

http://www.strategypage.com/qnd/topten/articles/20 131220.aspx

Only a small part of the above has Obama as a contributing factor. The rest are not Obama's fault, or to his credit.

http://www.npr.org/2014/03/19/291475122/u-s-pulls- out-of-icann-what-does-that-spell-for-internet-use rs

We may not be "doing anything" with ICANN, but that's fine with me. Giving it to the Kleptocracy that is the UN.... Ungood.

Gregtonn.

I live in Canada which has a far more socialized form of healthcare than Obamacare so I'm not going to comment on Obamacare. I pay taxes. I am subject to government regulations and so are the businesses and companies whose goods and services I purchase. Canada has a system of enviromental protection which is designed to protect the citizens of Canada much like what occurs in the USA with the EPA. In February of 2009 I invested $300K in the stock market in some pipeline, utility and banking stocks and have seen my investment triple in that time. At the same time I have been able to collect a very tidy stream of income from dividends which averages out to about $29K per year.

Quantitative Easing by Ben Bernake and the U.S. government, which the first tranche of funding was implemented while Bush II was still president, has benefitted me and my family immensely. The companies which I invested in were able to take advantage of low interest rates which were implemented by the U.S. gov't and later by the Canadian gov't and subsequently were able to invest in infrastructure and employ more people.

In my own situation, the last five years since the great recession have been an excellent opportunity to invest and create wealth for myself. I realize that people at the lower end of the income ladder have been left behind because they never had anything to invest in the first place but looking around I see declining unemployment rates in both Canada and the U.S. and I see ever increasing money moving around.

Quantitative easing has been a huge social experiment. There has been winners and losers. So far I am winning and cannot complain. I wish the same was the case for you.

Glad to hear Canada has better unemployment rates.

The US? Not so much. 92 million was the last figure I read for "out of the workforce". Not every month, but every year since '07 unemployment has gone up.

Most of the US aviation companies, little ones, out of business, most in '08 when the Pro-lawyer party changed liability laws to make their donors more money.

The funny ( ironic ) part is the 8 year mantra "worst economy since the great depression" suddenly disappeared from the lexicon in '08. It wasn't true when it was the battle cry, but then... it was true, but never, ever mentioned.

Before the election in '06 unemployment was so low that economists were complaining that Labor rates would have to go up to keep workers. Wouldn't that have been a dirty shame?

Yes, QE has been a huge social experiment. Huge. Um.... who pays for that?

from the article regarding karzai,

Rumsfeld said he thinks it's understandable that Karzai has sided with Russia -- "given the terrible, terrible diplomacy that the United States has conducted with Afghanistan over the last several years." - See more at: http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/susan-jones/ru msfeld-us-ties-karzai-gone-downhill-toboggan-under -obama#sthash.fcMKKkPA.dpuf

Rumsfield is an idiot if he thinks the US hasn't given Trashcanistan more than it deserves. If Afghanistan fell off the map, what would the world lose? Oil? Metals? Lumber? Rice? Intellectuals? Industry? Or, simply, a bottomless pit that leaches off of every country willing to give it a handout?

Karzai hates us. Of course, he's a muslim, and a voice of islam. But he should be smart enough to realize the millions upon millions of dollars Uncle Sam has poured into his country. If not for the US, Karzai wouldn't have a pot to piss in.

That arrogant bastard is on par with the O. He's playing for the wrong team, and idiots are willing to listen to his worthless opinion. His words are on the same page as the O's. Deceitful, cunning, misguided, and safe to assume they are a lie. You're talking about a man who accused the US of conducting suicide bombings and blaming it on the Taliban.

Greatlaker,
Thanks for sharing.

You made personal decisions which required individual responsibility, took a lot of risk, and were rewarded. Risk means you could have lost a lot. I presume your seed investment capital was originally acquired through hard work. Good for you. Your post is an inspiration for us all.

My story is similar. I had less than a thousand dollars to my name when I obtained my BSEE and had no job prospects and a moderate amount of debt. It was pretty scary. I am doing OK now designing products to enslave your brain.

Speaking on the Ukraine / Russian situation...
from the mouth of the O "No amount of propaganda can make right something that the world knows is wrong" This from the man that just hired Le Bron James to bolster the ACA Legislation.... (aka ObamaCare) ;?/ of course he was talking about the Russian / Ukrainian conflict.... but you are foolish if you do not see the mirror to His Hypocrisy

this should also have traction in the HealthCare aint working thread, and the Ukraine in Crisis thread - but I think we see that his flawed vision scatters across many realms and should be minimally repeated.

What a shame we have such surrey bastards in positions of leadership in a country with so much talent. Between some of the folks like Valerie Jarrett, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and Hillary Clinton (once fired for ethical violations) . . . we have surely scraped the bottom of the barrel.

You folks are paying these folks millions of dollars a year . . . financing a high life style and watching them erode the future for about anyone in the "Middle class".

If you are making less than $500k/yr these folks are reaming you a new with each passing day.

Perhaps we can move to California . . . where the Democrats firmly control the state and mete out social justice in a halcyon environment that celebrates the little guy . . . .

>>>As far as middle class getting reamed it started long before this sorry crowd got put in office, This situation just seems several orders of magnitude worse than previous admins...

I'd agree with that. It almost looks contrived, what has been done with the financial system. Most folks, with investment portfolios, likely returned between 25% and 40% last year. My personal return on just 401K investments was 35.5% with Vanguard.

The problem is . . . . and weather it's a problem or not depends, I suppose, on your point of view . . . is that many folks (it was announced last week that about 1/3 of 55 year olds have saved $0 for retirement) don't have investment portfolios and essentially got left behind.

This "QE" gig (and I'm aware that the big o didn't start it . . he ain't that bright) has created the false appearance of increased wealth when, in fact, it's likely been the single largest source of the widening gap twinxt the wealthy and the unwealthy.

I, when I was studying for my Econ undergrad work, had to do a paper on thesis written by a gal from Harvard. It was titled "The Poor Pay and Pay" and pointed out that most folks, living in lower income brackets, loose many economies . . they may be paying a significant amount in credit card interest at 28% . . buying groceries at the 7-11 at exorbitant prices and may be large consumers of health care and public services. They are literally on the backside of a financial power curve.

What the big o has done . . . . is to enslave this group. He's made unemployment attractive . . it's being marketed as an "opportunity to spend time with the family" . . pelosi assures us that growing unemployment checks fuel the economy and, after promising ( a word the big guy has redefined) to "lower health insurance costs by $2,500" . .many are seeing costs nearly double.

It's a shame that so many, touting their core beliefs as "social issues", have likely done more damage to the middle class than any administration in history.

Good for you for taking advantage. I've done well under this program too. If I were 25 years younger, I would be getting completely screwed though.

Technically true that GWB implemented QE1. At that time though, he had already lost the election and was working with BO to establish an orderly transition. While he didn't agree with it, he felt that it was better for the nation to not have sudden shifts in economic policy going from one administration to the next. Quite a different turn over of power than what he experienced at the other end of his Presidency BTW. So while BO didn't start the first round, it was implemented as a direct result of his input during the transition of power. He didn't invent it though. Japan did this a few decades earlier. In Japan this period became known as "The lost decade". Later it became known as "The lost decades". That does not bode well for the US.

WTF? Why would the pResident make a statement about being worried about a nuclear weapon going off in Manhattan? Does he know something? Is there a dirty bomb or an emp event in play? Did he teleprompter malfunction? It is probably status quo for now but it was a stupid statement to make. I am sure New Yorkers did not appreciate it.

It's like more like "getting caught" rather than "got caught". These guys (and, for the record, I'm not wholesale excluding Republicans either) have a habit of being "caught" incrementally as details are discovered.

Folks like Eric Holder are the classic offenders. The best, current, one is likely Lois Lerner who the big o tells us hasn't done a "smidgen" or wrong and who pompously stated "I've done NOTHING wrong: . . . then pleaded the 5th Amendment, to protect herself against self incrimination from sworn testimony, the called a colleague to delete various e-mails, and who's boss has laughed at a Congressional Subpoena and suggested it could take "years" to locate e-mails written my Ms. Lerner on her official government account (we'll ignore, for a moment, the one's she git caught concealing on her personal e-mail account like Kathleen Sebelius), got promoted then is now heavily "lawyered up" (at your expense, by the way) and laughing at the American people.

If any of these lazy bastards tried this stuff in private business they wouldn't last until lunch.

It is hard to imagine that World War III is NOT on the horizon because America is fully asleep at the wheel. Tyrants will always fill a vacuum. Always. John Bolton and Condeleeza Rice stand miles above these puny people but the GimmeGimme Americans have opted for their free stuff instead. We will pay severely for our "Free"dom.
