My sister in law is starting up a dog rescue facility. She's pretty tenacious, and dedicated to this cause so I don't doubt she will be successful. She's partial to the pits (has 2 of her own) and the bad rap they get but she's an animal lover across the board. http://www.gofundme.com/7cocbc | ||

Look up the thread on ADV rider about a woman that opened a Pit rescue. The killed her! Your pit in your fenced yard Cool Loose or in my yard. The Ithaca 37 will take care of it. I work with dog rescues and have fostered 15 or so. Pitts no way are they around my family. They are just plain canine Russian Roulette | ||

Kenm, Your entitled to your opinion. I just happen to disagree with it. I have two Pits and feel safer around them than around a rat terrier. Working in an animal shelter I was bitten a number of times by small dogs, but never once by Pits or any other large dog. | ||

But when the little yappers bite you You will survive. The Dog fight Idiots ruined pits as pets for at least 50 years till the are re bred. I like alligators what say we send one to live in your hot tub or pool let me know how that one works out for you. basically the same level of danger | ||

I don't have any concern around the house. I don't take them out in public any more just because of peoples attitude toward bully breeds. Either you love them or hate them. I've seen people at the pet store do an about face and head the other direction when they see my pups.  | ||

Great looking pack there! Bulls are what you make them. My neighbor has one who is a sweetheart. They spend a lot of time with it and it's well trained. Wonderful dog. My other neighbor has one that gets ignored and has free reign. I won't go near that one. | ||

Canine predjudice, pure and simple. My niece had a long line of Rottweilers. Some were the biggest babies you've ever seen. Even with strangers. Her secret was a LOT of socializing with people which she was able to do because of her lifestyle/business. Unfortunately, the reason the bigger dogs get bad press is because if one does go off, they tend to do more damage. I remember an episode of "The Dog Whisperer" where he went to a Pit Bull rescue facility for a case only to find out it was a Chihuahua that was the problem dog. | ||

P.S. In this respect, dogs are like our children and people in general. Love them, treat them well, spend time with them, and socialize them and you'll have a good specimen. If you don't, you're going to have a problem. | ||

No Uncle its not its called not being denial about a breed that has been distorted by Animal Cruelty. Dog fighters should be shot. Vick should be cleaning kennels for the rest of his life. Some pits are like a grenade with the pin pulled! Can you tell which one is going off? Every few months one of those folks is attacked after Giving PITS ARE SAFE Speech on local News. Its not the dogs fault we as a Society allowed the mistreatment for too long. However not recognizing the danger they pose is Crazy! | ||

Kenm, I agree with everything you said in your last post except "dog fighters should be shot". They should be fed into a wood chipper (feet first of course, so they can enjoy the full experience). I'm just wondering if you're saying that no pit could be a good dog. Is it that you think the aggression is bred into the breed? If so, that's where I disagree. It seems that a lot of your perspective of pits is based on rescued ones, (the woman who opened a rescue and your work with rescues) most of which probably came from horrible conditions. You would expect dogs subject to that to have issues. Let's not confuse aggressive with dangerous. There's no question that a pit (or ANY large dog) will be more dangerous than a small dog if it "goes off". My point is that no breed significantly stands out as more aggressive than another. I will also say that I would never leave ANY dog (including my own) alone with small children. Especially if the dogs weren't raised with children. From a story in June 2010 at CBSNews.com: “A study performed by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the CDC, and the Humane Society of the United States, analyzed dog bite statistics from the last 20 years and found that the statistics don’t show that any breeds are inherently more dangerous than others. The study showed that the most popular large breed dogs at any one time were consistently on the list of breeds that bit fatally. There were a high number of fatal bites from Doberman pinschers in the 1970s, for example, because Dobermans were very popular at that time and there were more Dobermans around, and because Dobermans’ size makes their bites more dangerous. The number of fatal bites from pit bulls rose in the 1980s for the same reason, and the number of bites from Rottweilers in the 1990s. Way too many ignorant and just plain inept dog owners. American Staffordshire terriers are absolutely wonderful dogs. Dogs bred for fighting, not so much. Cesar Milan is a godsend. |
