Hey City where did you get the info about all of the proposed air craft removals from service ? FF Nasa still uses the civi version of the U2 for its high altitude photo work, for the same reason that other agencies may use them. | ||

Thank you for the kind words. Hadn't heard about the F/A-18. Knew about the A-10 & TR cuts. Disagree with both, but the F/A-18 is pretty much all the Navy has. I know they want to mothball some carriers too. | ||

Fred, Cityx has been a valuable member of this forum for a long time. He is intelligent and has contributed a vast amount of information based upon first hand experience. As a newer guy on this forum, you telling him to get lost is not likely to be received well by City, or by the rest of the regulars. And I don't think anyone has said "get lost" since 1991. I am tired of America having to play world-police and help the rest of the world act like responsible adults. But the fact is, America is the most powerful nation on the face of the planet. We have the means, the methods, the projection. We have a moral obligation to help those who cannot do for themselves. And we will get blamed and accused, no matter what, but that doesn't mean we can stop. Do you understand how allies work? "you have to be a friend to make a friend". If we tell foreign nations, "GFYS, we're not helping anyone anymore" how do you think that is going to work in our favor? I realize that you have probably never been in the military. If you had any operational experience whatsoever, you would understand that the number one priority is always SECURITY. If you are prepared to greet the threat, your survivability increases greatly. If you are not prepared to meet any threats, they will surely come and overwhelm you. | ||

I have to say that if America want global interests, then it is the inevitable consequence that America will have to act, either alone or in partnerships, to protect those interests. And since America will always be the most powerful militarily and economically, her influence will be dominant, and that will make US at least the default 'senior partner' if not de facto chair of any alliance/partnership. Policing global situations in order to protect our interests will make US the world police, whether we want to or not. | ||

The president is an idiot. He's patently unqualified to be in the office and rode to an election victory on the wave of our collective guilt and need to set years of racial inequality right. He's crafted his entire career, including getting carried through Ivy League schools while smoking dope and having failing grades (you've read his book I assume?) The world has seen him for what he is long ago. The good folks of the USA are reaching the end of their tolerance for this failed social experiment as reflected, just yesterday, is some of the lowest poll numbers in history. Democrats are even beginning to abandon the cause now as they refuse to be seen with him when he visits various states and are beginning to vote against him. His healthcare "obamacare" fiasco is already caving in on itself. Fewer folks have healthcare now that it is, at least parts of it, are in place. It's the gold standard of administrative travesties. A year ago he called folks traitors for suggesting it, at least, be delayed. Now he''s delayed, ostensibly to support an election schedule, something like 14 different parts of the bill. People, let's be accurate, are dying as a result if the guys stupidity and failed policy and decisions. I don't care if you quit the name calling, I assign so little gravity to your loon rants that it at least brings and element of playground entertainment to the place. However, the Resident has a track record of making decisions which negatively impact the citizens of the country over which he presides, and diminishes the global standing of his own country. A10 is pretty much anti-stealthy. have you ever been on the ground when an A10 comes over head in bound to an Training area? they are quieter than a helio they are on you by the time you hear them, and in a forested area they are hard to localize, I work about 65 miles from MCAS Jacksonville NC and the surrounding training areas, when the hogs are about is chilling to think of what they can do... } | ||

It's amazing to me that the largest thread on a Buell motorcycle forum is a constant rant about the inferiority of the black american president. It seems to me that either consciously or unconsciously, middle aged, middle class, white american Buell riding males are still freaked out by having someone other than one of their own in the seat of presidential power. It's racism pure and simple. Sometime in the future there will be another white republican male as president and everything will be all happy and pleasant on the board and critics of the republican president will be bashed for being libtard's, and communists, etc, etc. As an outsider looking in, it would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic. | ||

When you're flying below radar, stealth doesn't matter. I think the A10 is a great aircraft. But it's long in the tooth, and getting harder and harder to support. And if I remember correctly, they were decommissioned before, and bought back for the gulf war. They aren't going to be cut up for scrap. We can bring them back again if needed. The F/A-18E and F were designed to be an interim fighter to replace the F-14 which was past the point of being unsupportable. We had ONE FMC F14 on the last cruise I did. One. The airframe and electronics are ancient. Parts are impossible to procure. The avionics support equipment is similarly ancient and difficult to maintain. Great plane (for an over the horizon fire and forget missile delivery system that was not designed for dogfighting, but solely for taking out Russian Bear bombers before they got in nuke range of the carrier) but it was time to let it go. It may be time to let the A-10 go. It is surely time to let the temporary F/A-18E and F go, and embrace the real F-14 replacement, the naval variant of the joint strike fighter. | ||

I teach graduate students at an Ivy League school and my classes are made up of students from a wide variety of races, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds from around the world. The thing about police is that you have them becuase of what other people do, and because you need to protect yourself from those other people... If we were the problem, we wouldn't need to be cops. I'd love to not have to worry about the big bad world. Some days I fantasize about it in fact. (Really!) Historically however, it has simply been a path to a *lot* of good men getting killed. WW1, WW2, Oklahoma City, 9/11, etc. I want to honor the ultimate sacrifice that these good men already made, and protect other good men from also having to make that sacrifice in the future. | ||
