I understand High Standard, a very old and reliable company who made some of the best .22 pistols ever made has recently bought the rights to produce the old AMT pistols. I have an old .45 Backup from AMT back in the days and was lucky enough to get one of the highly dependable ones. No problems, except the normal heavy trigger pull, in 20 years or so. It fed and fired anything reliably. I also had their .22 Automag but sold it after many failures to feed properly no matter what I did. It was much fun though shooting rapidly at moving jack rabbits. The .45 is still my warm weather deep cover carry pistol. It IS a very solid, keep forever firearm. See below. "www.highstandard.com/index.php/brands/amt-automag"

Got to put the first 100 rounds through my new Ruger yesterday. Mostly a very nice shooting gun. Great gun for the price IMO. Some quirks though. The slide remains locked back even when racked with a full magazine. That's pretty unusual, and I think it caught me with almost every mag I loaded. I understand you can simply take out a detent and let gravity do it's thing to "fix" that. The whole magazine disconnect thing is just annoying to me too. Again, I know it's an easy "fix". The trigger is not to the standard that I've spoiled myself with on some other guns, but at this price point is really quite good. I paid less for this whole gun that you can spend on some trigger assemblies! It will be getting the Volquartsen accurizing kit installed soon. Probably this weekend.

BTW, I don't mean to be picking on the R51. Far from what I intend to do, but I know that with the pre-release hype, some here had high hopes for it. It looks like they have a number of pretty serious issues to get worked out though. I do hope these issues can be worked out. Between this and the just recalled Model 700 they have some hits to their reputation.

For all you guys that do not mind buying a full AR platform, not just a lower or upper, have the money(!), and want the ultimate long range or hunting big game rifle you just might want to consider one of these. They seem to be the ultimate in a "modern sporting rifle". One of my good friends that lives in Mn. is down in Texas right now hunting hogs with a 30-06 version and just today clued me in to these. Here is the website:
My friend got his on sale, somehow, for $1500.00. Seems fairly reasonable but they are now $2000 again. The BN36 version.

That's one big, heavy 30-06. I'd rather use something more reasonably sized and made for the caliber.

Most people use the Browning BAR MKII for such things.

Slightly more practical.

I like the 308 AR's and 308 and 7.62x54r AK based guns myself.

Agreed guys and my new "urban sniper rifle" is a nice Ruger American in 7mm-08 which is shooting everything into 1" groups with several handloads into 1/2" regularly and total costs with a muzzle break, scope and bipod is under $600.00. BUT, the new trends in AR high powered rifles are shooting match types of groups in great long range and high power game "modern sporting rifles". Just bring money!.

Hornady is known for using thin/soft brass. It'll likely get all manner of dinged up going in and potentially stuck in the chamber coming out.
