Here's another piece of work. Alfau, who only visits us to throw is idiotic remarks into the mix.

Why don't you and Buellinmke get married? It's obvious you would have a great deal in common and SO much to talk about! Oh, to be a fly on the wall for those deep conversations!

'Americans see what their told'

This one hears what he is told, and sees what he reads. That the Japanese were trying to control the rubber industry is no secret. Pick up a history book...even a Japanese one.

He also knows how to spell 'they're'.

Indonesian rubber and oil, boycotts from the U.S. and Australia ( UK ) a sense of religiously inspired Manifest Destiny, and, most important of all, they thought they could win, because no one had yet stopped them.

That last part, "thought they could win" is also the "cause" of both World Wars. The Kaiser thought he could win. Hitler thought he could win. He conned France & England into giving him other countries to keep him from attacking them.

Pretty much every war got started with one side thinking they could conquer the other. Theft on a grand scale.

When you don't stop a bully, he keeps on with his successful strategy.

Not sure how much of this to buy.... finding supporting cross references can be tricky.

How can you tell if an editorial is from a rational Arab or is a plant by the Evil Enemy... And my view of who the evil enemy is, is colored by the fact that the Jiahdi want to kill me. So naturally I'm not on their side.

"Winning "is an interesting concept. my own take from my readings is that Japan never thought they could defeat the U.S. . But they did think that the U.S. Would be prepared to go the distance to win total victory. I don't think Hitler thought he could win either but he assumed a negotiated peace would leave him in a better position. Unfortunately for him the allies weren't prepared to negotiate or side with him against the soviets.

From my readings, the Japanese army thought they could win, and was pretty much in control of the military at the time.

And Navy leadership was selected by picking those that thought they could win too. It was the Navy rank and file that knew they were in trouble from the start...

There are some great histories available as amazon kindle books right now written by people that were there from start to finish (the ones that survived, which weren't many). And the Japanese are just starting to tell "the whole story", the initial histories were fairly unreliable in a couple of ways due to strong cultural influences... authors wanted to avoid criticizing their leadership, and they wanted to avoid criticizing the Americans which now occupied them.

U.S.

Correct.
They hod no intention of Invading America. Just owning Indonesia and Australia, China, South East Asia, and eventually India, was just fine. Resources and slave labor was the goal.

Wining meant they kept the loot of conquest and we backed down.

But they did think that the...
You mean they didn't think the U.S. was prepared to go the distance. Right? If so, I agree.

Yes, sorry, one too many ciders while I was writing.

I don't think they , the Japanese, hoped to conquer Australia but hegemony over everything north of oz was probably enough.
I think my underlying point is that saying no early on is not enough to stop aggressors like Hitler. Aggressors need to believe that the civilised community will do whatever it takes to stop them no matter what the cost.

Australia was next after New Guinea. That was the plan.

Aussie troops and a few brave pilots hammered the Japanese invasion there in very intense combat in incredibly tough conditions. P-40's & converted trainers for the most part. New Guinea itself was an enemy to invaders and defenders alike. Steep jungle mountain trails didn't really connect separated ports on both sides of the island.

A mostly ignored front in the war by histories but a vital one for Australia & it's allies.

I get your point and agree.

Throughout history, wars happen because one side thinks it can get away with it. From raiding a border town to WW2.

Putin knew no one would stop him invading Crimean Ukraine. What Hillary and Barry thought we won't know unless we get the records. That's not going to happen unless they go to trial..... and they are above the law..... so don't hold your breath. Blue isn't that becoming a color.

I'm going to with insanely incompetent . . . he's, frankly, way in over his head. Putin bitch slapped him last week when he made nice at the United Nations and hours later a 3-Star Riussian General marches into the U.S. Embassy and "orders" us to cease aerial combat ops and cede to the Russians . .who will "take it from here".

Who ever thought we'd see the day U.S. fighter jets were chased out of an area.

So far Assad is accused of killing 300,000 Syrians. Russia will help him kill many more. From Assad's pint of view, it's win win, since the people he's killing are, to him, completely expendable.

Assad is an Alawite, ( tribe & faith ) and has for years balanced the hatred of the Shia & Sunni who live in Syria ( and massively outnumber the Alawites ) to stay in power. If ALL of the people not of his tribe are killed, he still wins.

Unlike the restraint shown by the west in counter insurgency operations, (restraint... aka bleeding heart squeamish fake vegan don't let me see it's really meat ) the Soviets and Assad don't give a Damn if they kill thousands, millions, everyone else on the planet not their loyal followers. They can and will win, because Syria is NOT Afghanistan. Iraq is Not Afghanistan, and Assad will control HIS borders, unlike in Afghanistan where the hostile terrorists can slip across the border.

Assad's borders are with Countries that ( except ISIS controlled Iraq ) are not safe havens for rebels.

I found the poll asking if Britain should join Russia in the war against ISIS interesting.

Should Britain follow Russia's lead and go to war against ISIS?

YES – it's time Cameron stepped up

NO – it's not our problem

http://www.jerrypournelle.com/chaosmanor/dyson-sph eres-and-other-important-matters/

"Dear Dr. Pournelle,
What road was it good intentions was a paving material for?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/did-us-weapon s-supplied-to-syrian-rebels-draw-russia-into-the-c onflict/2015/10/11/268ce566-6dfc-11e5-91eb-27ad15c 2b723_story.html

So the US has been supplying anti-Assad rebels with weaponry — but NOT enough to win. I quote:
“The plan, as described by administration officials, was to exert sufficient military pressure on Assad’s forces to persuade him to compromise — but not so much that his government would precipitously collapse and leave a dangerous power vacuum in Damascus.”

Does anyone in the administration realize that insurgency is not a cake that you bake at just the right temperature? That a dictator who will almost certainly be hung for war crimes is not going to “negotiate” any kind of exit unless he is compelled to leave with overwhelming military force? And that , so long as he can call on Iran and Russia, it is going to be very hard to develop and project that level of force?
As it is, think of this like a poker game: The Americans raised the stakes by pushing TOW missiles onto the board. They expected (I don’t know why) Assad to fold. Instead, he went to his friends and raised the stakes himself with direct Russian military intervention.
So what’s the next step? Call or fold?
Regardless, we have officially stepped into a time warp and are engaged in a proxy war with Russia, to the extent that weapons WE supply are being used to kill Russians. And if we continue to supply weapons, knowing that is going to happen , that will make the current accidental proxy war a deliberate one.
Whose imbecilic idea was it to get us into a shooting war with the Russians, anyway?
I am utterly flabberghasted. This sort of consequence should be obvious to any academy graduate. Heck, if you just ask a teenager who has played Civilization 5. What the devil do we have a Joint Staff for, if they are willing to approve a plan like this, as opposed to resigning en masse?

Respectfully,

Brian P.

Hard to believe Obama got the Democrat party Vietnam obscenity backwards. First he abandons the people we promised to protect to tyranny, Then he goes into a proxy war with Russia.

In the 60-70's they did it the other way around. Any bets on how well this works out?

Syria isn't Iraq, or Afghanistan. Syria is a Client State of the New Soviet Union, aka Russia, just as it was the old Soviet Union.

Syria is IMPORTANT to Russia, and they need the warm water port there to rearm & rest ships. Now Putin has a ground force and air power presence in Syria and is methodically bombing the people Barry supposedly supports. ( and ISIS, when they feel like it. )

Having predicted this was a bad idea does not make me feel better about it.

This is what happens when you give a Nobel Peace Prize to a Leftist. War. More war, and civilian casualties in ever increasing numbers.
