I have been wanting an electric bicycle for the past couple years. Does anyone have any experience with a complete bike, a conversion kit or a custom build? I have considered all three, but am currently looking and a used Prodeco Outlaw SS. I'm no expert, but 12 AH and 150 miles don't seem to line up from a physics perspective... not unless it's more or less walking speed. | ||

No, the the 12ah battery will likely go 20-25 mile range without assist. it has about 150 miles on the odometer. | ||

Hard to imagine a motor and battery that small would be of much value. Also hard to believe that the 1% of the time that you utilize the brake while riding would be enough to charge the battery worth anything. | ||

In electrics you are so marginal for range that every little bit helps. Some of the electric airplane guys are looking at regen braking on landing.....but they need high speed charging ubercapacitors for that. Also piezoelectric power recovery from wing flexing. There is also a transparent photo cell tech they are looking at for canopies. Current battery power density makes electric planes only practical on a motorglider (power for take off then soaring power off ) or very light limited range recreational use. One one now available ultralight electric the battery costs as much as the rest of the aircraft.......and the charger is over $300. Electric bikes now have "enough" power to work in their speed environment it's just range that is the issue. As soon as the roads clear I am test riding a Bachetta recumbent bike and it may get a motor installed. | ||

I have also seen some E-bikes that have better battery placement (mass centralization). The ones that have the batteries up on the luggage rack... judging by past bicycling experience carrying loads... they would get pretty squirrely. | ||

I realize ebikes have their place, and this is not the same genre, but for crying out loud, you could purchase an 1125r for $5700. It would take a LOT of riding for that bike to pay for itself, which in my mind is 75% of the reason to have an e bike. | ||

The one I am looking at is considerably less. there are some cool features a 1125 can't do. -ride on the sidewalk -go up/down stairs -go on the bus -Ensure you won't get laid while riding one...J/K There are other toys out there besides motorcycles... | ||

Hmm, I once rode my XB9SX on a sidewalk in order to avoid the ignorant car driver who though it was his turn to T-bone a motorcyclist. Not dogging on E-bikes, in fact, I think they potentially have a big part to play in the agenda to do away with America's dependence on foreign oil. But, if it's not going to pay for itself anytime soon in fuel savings, I'd rather have 120 RWHP. I'm still waiting for a fully enclosed, aerodynamic, recumbent, electric bike to come along and dominate the market. | ||

Being on the wrong side of 60, the hills in this city have gotten steeper over the last 20 years for me. Getting home exhausted and worn out is not what I like to do. So, I've been using an Ohm Urban XU700 for a year and a half, and commute as often as I can. The hills of Seattle make use of the battery, but I have to pedal to get assistance from the motor. A battery charge lasts about 24 miles for my hilly commute, but goes over 40 miles for flat road riding. Newer models have upped the battery range to over 60 miles. I chose a nicer (pricier) bike and have no regrets about the cost. E-bikes are forced, in the USA, by law to not propel the rider over 20mph, you are on your own over that speed. Anyway, I get good exercise since I can select the amount of juice that helps me. | ||

I've read alot of great things about Bionx. Do you find maintaining speeds at above 20mph are pretty easy? Nice looking bike.  | ||

Good looking bike. Edit: are you using this for on or off road? If you're riding on the street, it seems like your battery life (and legs and cardio system)would benefit from street tires. (Message edited by torquehd on February 26, 2014) |
