Yeah like I ever had a bolt break off so conveniently located. When can you ever get one to where you can center a punch, they are almost always recessed and uneven go figure.

Melting paraffin wax on the hot stud seems to help, too.

Drilling the hole was a waste of time. When they break off flush I've had some luck welding a wide flat washer to the broken bolt and then weld the nut to the washer. If it breaks below the surface, you've got to burn it out. If it's a blind hole, you're screwed. That is unless you have lots of time and an EDM.

A dremel tool can help you get a centered "punch" as well when the break isn't level or flush. If you get the tungsten carbide bits, they can also help you cut through a broken tap (though you will need a few of them for that).

And remember, once you turn the broken stud into a broken stud tube, it can compress some and it will get MUCH easier to get out with a left handed drill bit or broken screw remover (which is less likely to break in there than an easy out).
