So today was the first day in a while where it's been nice weather outside, so I took my 03 Blast for a ride. On my way home, I noticed the shifter was having trouble getting into first, so I had to kick it a little. The lever kept getting lower and lower, so I ended up driving back in 5th gear. I was able to pull the shifter back up to normal position, but now it is loose, and while I can start it in 1st, it is too loose to get it to shift to 2nd, it just pulls right up.

I'm thinking it may be a problem with the splined collar, but I can't figure out how to tighten the thing. Any help??

I don't have a Blast, but I would expect there to be a pinch bolt to tighten it on the shaft. It sounds like the splines may have gotten torn up from being loose. Is the pinch bolt in place?

Found a picture. Looks like the pinch bolt is on the bottom.

The pinch bolt is there, and pretty tight. I took the collar off and put it back on, it seems to be fine.

It looks like the shifter is just spinning around the collar, like there isn't enough friction between the two.

One fix John, when the splines, if any, are smoothed out and letting the shifter rotate on the shaft, is to drill a small hole through both the lever and the shaft and put a roll pin in. I have done this on many older bikes and it the only sure way without replacing either or both the lever and the shaft,(a lot of work there). Buy or get a small roll pin first and then use a drill bit about .005 smaller, install, (press in) the roll pin and trim off any excess pin. Make sure its in the right place for your foot before drilling. good luck bud.

Happens all the time on the Riders Edge Bikes
Take hack saw and cut off the area marked by the X

That will allow you to tighten it up a bit and should fix your problem

I did almost the same thing on my daughters Blast except I just made the entire slot wider. I used a cut of wheel but you could just as easily use a hacksaw.
Haven't had a problems since.
