Last night, I ordered a winter jacket from Bruns Clothing in Watertown, SD. I like the idea that it's made in the USA, and I also really like the focus on quality. I was prepared to spend quite a bit more than a similar Carhartt jacket would have cost, but instead I found that the Bruns jacket is considerably lower in price. I also like the fact that each jacket is custom made. I called and asked if they would be willing to put a small pocket on the inside for a cell phone, and the gentleman I was talking to (I think it was the owner, Lee Bruns , but I'm not positive) told me it would be no problem.
Now, I just have to wait while they make it and ship it (they also ship via Priority Mail!). I'll report back when I get it.
I found out about Bruns Jackets from Wild Guzzi, where several people have bought them and love the quality. Here's a link to their site:
http://www.brunsclothing.com/catalog/catalog.htm

I have no commercial interest in any of the above; I'm just trying to share a discovery about a quality USA made product and I thought some folks here might be interested.

I came very close to ordering one last year. All the reviews I've seen give them high praise. I decided not to because I'll just destroy it at work pretty quickly. In retrospect, the $30 piece of crap I'm heading into winter with sucks. I hate it a lot.

Lee Bruns was an officer for the Glacial Lakes Motorcycle Club. GLMC has been putting on 12 hr rallies, similar to the 11 day Iron Butt rally. I attend as many as I can. Always a good time. (www.glmc.org)

I've met and had breakfast with Lee. Nice guy. Go USA

Crusty, keep us posted on when it arrives and how you like it. I've always try to buy American made products! Never owned a foreign made automobile in my life and never will either.

Fb1,
I too have a Fox Creek jacket, elk gloves and overpants (the heaviest black leather pair of jeans you will ever see LOL). I believe I gain about 12 pounds when I Go Fox Creek ATGATT. Great stuff.

Fahren, agree, great product, and the folks who work there rock, too: their customer service is outstanding. Lucky for me Fox Creek Leather is a very pretty 40-minute ride through the mountains from here. When you walk in the front door, the smell of leather is intoxicating.

I ordered a winter jacket from Bruns Clothing and got it today. 10 days from the day I ordered it.
It looks well-made and fits well. Worth the price.
The standard inside pocket looks like it would handle an I-phone.
The CC pocket will take a full size 1911. It’s shaped like a handgun. It’s a snug fit, and would be hard to get at quickly. A 3” 1911 is more accessible.
The zipper is a little wimpy; the jacket would be prefect with a heavy duty zipper.

I'm pretty happy with my jacket. After wearing it for a few weeks, it's softening up. I got the snaps, but I think I'll go with a zipper on my next jacket; as well as a Byron collar. (I went with the standard elasticized collar).
I'm quite pleased with the quality, and I'm still amazed that a made to order jacket with assorted minor modifications that's made in Watertown, SD is cheaper than a standard Carhartt jacket that's made in Malasia.

I received mine a few weeks ago and learned some key info in the process that should be known by anyone who is going to order one of these excellent jackets;

Use the website to get an idea of what you want as far as add ons and such but place the order by phone.

I did the whole thing on the website and it didn't come with what I thought I ordered. Don't get me wrong, I really like this jacket but I thought I chose 1" longer sleeves and an extra, third pocket. I thought I was getting a different cuff too. What I received was 1" longer torso, no third pocket and elastic cuffs. Metal fabbing activities will quickly fry the elastic cuffs, I'm afraid. Also the width of the torso fits a fatter man than me but I don't remember seeing any choices for that on the site. Another reason to order by phone.

Overall, I am still happy with it. I recommend this jacket highly to anyone in the trades or for any other outdoor work.

I chose thinsulate and the jacket is very warm. I've used it down to single digit temps just fine. The gun pocket fit's my Mak just fine. I expect this fine jacket to last longer than any off the shelf jacket I could find. It already seems like an old friend. If I out live this thing I will order the next one over the phone and it will be perfect.
Yes, I will buy a Bruns again.

I was thinking about giving a friend a gift certificate for a jacket as a Christmas present, so I sent an e-mail to Bruns asking if they were available. this is the reply I got:

I could make one up, but after the first of the year it looks like I'll be closing the business down. Sales have just been awful this year. Our product and service reviews have always been great, but sales have just never gotten much traction. It wouldn't be nice to take money for a gift certificate then close down and not be able to honor it.

I'm a bit shocked and disappointed. I really like my jacket, and the quality is first class throughout. I guess I'll just have to buy a jacket for Ernie for Christmas with the features I think he'll like.
I really hate to see another American business bite the dust; especially since the quality is better than the Imported Brand Name, and the price is lower.
I wish there was something I could do to help.

I'll definitely be ordering one in the next day or so. Probably too little too late to really help out the business. Maybe I'll put up a post on facebook to see if this social media crap can actually do some good.

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy! Got a call back from them. Ordered me up a jacket.

Went with: 4XL, 14oz Duck Shell,Thinsulate liner, Zipper, Gun pocket, Regular inside pocket, and Storm flap.

All for $111.00! That's just amazing. I sure hope they can stay in business.

Lee said I'd cook down here in Arkansas, but it was in the single digits during a recent ice storm. I'm also going to use the jacket as a motorcycle jacket so I think the warmer the better. I'm real excited : )

Just got my custom made jacket too. I went with a black duck, sewn in hood, a couple pockets inside and the much needed conceal carry pocket. This looks like an awesome jacket, fits real good, quality made.
I'd order another one if I needed it and recommend it to others.

those that got the CC pocket; will they put it on either side?

i am right handed, and think it will work better as a cross draw??

will it hold an SP101 snub?

should i still use a holster in the pocket?

Mine came on the left side, being a righty this works perfectly. I didn't even ask- it just came that way. My walther p22 fits down inside the pocket nicely, can't even see it when the jacket is open.

Got mine in the mail yesterday. Terrific jacket, I love it. Got my gun pocket on the left as well, but they will put it on either side. It is a large jacket with plenty of room to layer a hoodie underneath. I probably should have gone with a 3xl instead. This is the first jacket I've owned where a 4xl IS a 4xl, not a size or two smaller.

Wore it on the bike today. With a hoodie, in 47' temps, I was plenty warm. The 14oz duck is a bit stiff, but I think it will wear in perfectly. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a good quality jacket made right here in the USA.
