Phil Robertson, in my mind, is how God intended men to be. He loves God, his family, his country. He makes things happen for himself, his family, his neighbors. He wouldn't take a handout if one was offered. He has a pioneering spirit and if he can't find a way, he'll make a way, and give God the credit for the blessing of it.
He doesn't apologize for his beliefs or actions. He stands up for what is right.

Such a stark contrast to the current stereotype of an American. Sad, for America, that more of us are not more like Phil.

I believe more Americans are just like Phil than not (partial proof of this, IMO, is what happened in the 2010 mid-terms), it's just that the "other" side talks much louder and much more often (easy to do when the media is controlled by the state).

I like his style.

Fb1,
As it turns out, his "style" is actually an invention of the A&E network, not actually "real," per se.

It's actually fascinating that A&E has captured, packaged and marketed such a pure distillation of what you accurately describe as "how God intended man to be."

To clarify, I don't see anything wrong with what they have done. I think the earlier photos of the family, so different from the Duck Dynasty "rednecks" on TV, look pretty healthy and happy, like some good Americans enjoying their own kind of good times. I just want to be clear that what we see on TV is a concoction, a creative re-branding of these people. It is Art & Entertainment (for network profit). Not real life.

...what you accurately describe as "how God intended man to be."

Torquehd gets credit for that statement. : )

Disclaimer: I've never seen an episode of their show, although I understand the gist of what it's all about. My "I like his style" comment was based mostly on the vid posted above.

I'll follow your link tonight after I get off w*rk; thanks for posting it up.

FB1, Great find. I've seen bits of the show and... well I ain't much on TV anyways. The comments Phil gave to GQ peaked my interest in him as an individual. I was even more interested when he and his family refused to back down to the false will of the imperious left. This is all I need to know about him. Probably won't ever watch the show but still a fan of the family. Thanks.

I knew what FB meant and I second the sentiment. I too appreciate Mr. Robertson. I too have never seen the show. Superficial "style" has nothing to do with it. In fact, the long shaggy beards are a negative for me.

It is on TV. Therefore it is not real, said the bearded man.

"Real" is an interesting concept. Cooked up or not, this character exists, in the form of a TV personality, and he (and his family, I guess) seem to have taken on a bit of a "mythic" status (like the Joseph Campbell kind of myth: a kind of universal symbol that can connect us to a deeper truth). That is to say, the character seems to resonate with a heck of a lot of folks, whether he is "real" or not. And in a way, that fact alone makes him more "real" than a lot of other people you see out there. I don't watch the show, by the way.

I've never seen the show either, and having finally just now watched the video, I like him and his family and their story.

I don't care when they grew their beards.

The show is funny and self deprecating, and you can see some real wisdom peeking out from around corners now and then (no matter how hard A&E tries to hide it).

I'm with Fahren on this one.

I haven't seen the show, don't care, and haven't actually heard the "patriarch's faux pas", though I'm told it was rude. I was mostly told it was rude by folk who haven't heard it either. So "meme" seems to be the reality here....

Show business, "reality tv" in particular, wrecks peoples lives, since it only sells if the drama is on high. Smart folk ( which the Duck Dynasty folk seem to be ) can do well.

It's soap opera, condensing lifetimes of heart break and angst into an hour.

That's why we watch. It's more entertaining than our own slow motion lives. That's why the Characters on on TV shows are larger than life, and because they are in our living rooms we feel an intimacy with them. We fall in love/lust/fandom/obsession with Characters, when they are no more real than Comics books, but somehow more real than we are.

This sometimes gives actors a hard time when fans forget they're actors.
