" ...U.S. M7 shoulder holster, but open carry isn't allowed in FL....and people tend to freak out a little about seeing large guns in the open; even the gun people..." Washington is open carry, but I never openly carry - - this holster can be adjusted multiple ways under your riding jacket - - fits great under my expedition style First Gear Kilamanjaro, not so well under my tighter fitting summer-weight stuff.

The wife got me a new backpack today that is pretty much what I was thinking of. Maybe she feels a little bad that it was her backpack that dumped my gun? FWIW,, I use those small "Nite Ize" S-Biners to hold the backpack zippers together when on the CR or FXR - - without them, I've had the pack zippers open before, not fun to try and figure out what jumped out.

My life is worth the best I can afford, and the ones that work best for me are what I buy and carry. Amen, brother - - Life's too short for cheap guns.

My riding jackets are snug fitting. There's just enough room for a flannel or sweat shirt.

My parts are on the way. Total for all parts was ~$325. Not too bad, considering. The receiver is 1-2 months out. That's going to be a long couple of months.

How in the world can that be?

Those are amazing pictures, certainly never seen anything like it. Maybe post them on 1911forum.com and you could get some useful advice. If it was mine, I'd try to fix it, for sure. Might take a while/bit of patience. Might even need another 1911 in the meantime. (I have 7 of them, NEVER should have sold that Kimber...)

I don't know. I blame Miami.

I've posted this on a few forums. I've gotten everything from "that's why you buy Glocks" to "don't be a pussy and fix it" (ARF dot com, of course) to "just buy a new one."

"that's why you buy Glocks"

So that you don't feel bad when it gets destroyed?

Sorry Glock lovers.

Yeah, it's why I have my XD(m) too. I just find it funnier to say about a Glock.

While the wife ok'd buying another one, I don't like waste. I will reuse as much of the pistol as possible, which is all but a handful of parts (literally ).

We really don't need the financial burden of buying another $1000+ gun right now.

I haven't met a polymer framed auto I've liked, save for my Ruger 22/45. They just don't shoot smooth compared to the alloy and steel framed guns I own.

On the plus side, for the same price as a S&W Sigma, I can have the best parts of my favorite pistol shooting again.

I can't believe you dropped your gun.

Being relegated to a plastic pistol would seem appropriate penance. Maybe you ought go sit in the corner and think about what you've done young man.

I can't believe you dropped your gun.

What would the men at Paris Island say? uhoh

Got a buddy selling a nice Les Baer Custom Carry for $1800, and a good trustworthy local FFL dealer that could help if you are outside Ohio. At the high end, I wish I could afford it, but if you are looking at $1000+ anyway, it would be a great carry gun. Very few rounds through it, minor parkerizing flaws on slide.

Having been to MCRD Parris Island (2 r's), I can tell you exactly what they would say. And no didn't happen to me, as I was Very Careful not to drop my rifle. And heaven forbid if you called it a gun. That was a gaffe worth many more jumping jacks and laps around the platoon as it marched from one place to another. Both situations usually only happened once to any given platoon; the environment promotes quick learning.

Just teasing a bit, Blake

>>>Having been to MCRD Parris Island (2 r's) SAN DIEGO, I can tell you exactly what they would say.

One of my most "memorable" moments was leaving an M16A1 unattended for just long enough for a Drill Instructor, Sgt. Mattingly, to take it and hide it.

Things got much worse for me before they got better.

Affirmative.

It's something that happens . . . . . . ONCE . . . only once.

I have to ask, what IS salvageable on that 1991?

The barrel, bushing? Recoil spring..... a few pins, perhaps the slide stop?

With the frame gone, ( repairable, but... ) the slide looks shot, (also fixable, but.....) The breach parts?

I'd think a new or lightly used one would be a far more rational decision.

OTOH if you Want to build up a new 1911 clone, customizing it to your specs, and the barrel is good..... go for it.
You don't have to rationalize anything to me, so any sentimental reasons for doing so are fine too.

I'd still save the old one to be taken out to show others. It has quite a tale to tell.

Damaged parts are the rear sight, frame, grip safety, thumb safety, mainspring housing pin, hammer and sear pins.

Replacement parts were $325.

The slide is only scratched. There's no need to scrap anything on the top end. I could refinish it looking better than new, or leave it as is. I haven't decided yet.

I don't like having serviceable parts with no home.

Rick, you may be spoiled by your wonderful wife, but you are an honest man.

Still, as penance, your replacement sidearm...

It could easily have been a pink .380. You've been shown compassion and mercy.

I had the occasion to buy a pink firearm. After my father-in-laws death Japanese college presidents started coming over to burn incense at his grave site. I took the opportunity to go with my mother-in-law to drive them around. We would take them to the grave site then to a steak house, and just across the street from the steak house was a gun shop. The lady at the gun shop let them handle the guns and take pictures. During one of the trips there was this lonely looking pink 380 at the end of the counter so I bought it, proving to the Japanese that this is the greatest show on earth! The word must have spread because now when the Japanese come over to visit the father-in-laws grave they expect to be show the gun shop!

Go ahead and send it my way, Blake. I'll be happy to do a highway drop test on it.

My wife almost purchased one of those when a gun shop employee kept insisting it was the best thing out there for the money. I told him money wasn't a consideration. She ended up with a Browning Hi-Power in .40S&W. I'd rather have one of the best out there period than the best for the money.

I'm carrying this until I get the other fixed:
